The sorbent is produced by reacting a mixture of maleic anhydride copolymer, a bifunctional organic compound (hydrochinon, diethyleneglycol, hexamethylene diamine, glycerol, ethyleneglycol), and .alpha.-benzoin-oxime in the ratio of 1:(0.25-0.50):(0.75-0.5) in a polar organic solvent (dioxane, dimethyl formamide, or toluene) in the temperature range of 90.degree.-95.degree. C. with constant stirring for 1 to 2 hours. The resultant product is then cooled to room temperature and flushed 3-5 times with cold water. A white stringy product results. This is dried and crushed. Particles of 1-2 mm in diameter are selected for the solid sorbent.

    Abstract: An anionic polymerization initiator comprising the reaction product of a functionalizing agent selected from the group consisting of substituted aldimines, ketimines and secondary amines and, an organolithium compound. Elastomeric polymers prepared with these initiators have functional sites incorporated at the initiator end of the polymer chain and provide vulcanizable rubber compounds exhibiting reduced hysteresis. Articles such as tires, produced with low hysteresis elastomeric polymers have lower rolling resistance. Methods are also provided for preparing the initiators, functionalized polymers and vulcanizable elastomeric compounds having reduced hysteresis.

    Abstract: A method is provided for the direct synthesis of novel polymeric materials functionalized with desirable nitrogen-containing functional groups such as terminal azido, cyano, carbonylamino or thiocarbonylamino groups. Polymerization and functionalization occur in a substantially simultaneous manner. All necessary reactants for the functionalization are present when polymerization is initiated. The nitrogen-containing functional group is provided as a part of a molecule having a release moiety which is preferably resonance stabilized or of tertiary alkyl type and which acts to aid the nitrogen-containing species in functioning as a leaving group.

    Abstract: Terpolymers of polyolefin/acrylic acid or substituted acrylic acid/acrylonitrile are prepared by combining a polyolefin/acrylic acid or substituted acrylic acid copolymer with at least one dinitrile to form a mixture and reacting the mixture at a temperature of at least 200.degree. C. for a time sufficient to form the terpolymer. Copolymers of polyolefin/acrylonitrile are obtained when the reaction is carried to completion. The total reaction masses obtained comprising terpolymer or copolymer, cyclic imide, solvent, when used and any unreacted dinitrile find use as pour point depressants in heavy hydrocarbon oils.

The halogen ion is replaced by an equivalent of a mono- or polyvalent organic or inorganic counterion different from the halogen ion and suitable for the adjustment of the desired solid body properties.
