  • Patent number: 5936041
Abstract: The invention pertains to improved lubricating oil dispersants wherein a fractionating polymer is prepared prior to functionalization (e.g., in the Koch reaction) for making dispersant additives. In one aspect, it was discovered that by fractionating a polymer to remove light hydrocarbon and unreacted monomer from the polymer before the carbonylation step of the Koch reaction, the amount of light ester impurities generated was minimized. Light ester is an undesirable byproduct that adversely affects the recycle of the catalyst from the functionalization step of the Koch reaction. The invention also pertains to improved lubricating oil nitrogen-containing dispersant additives derived from fractionated polymer.

Abstract: Anion-exchanging molded bodies and a method of manufacturing the same. The aim is to find anion-exchangers which can be produced in any shape simply, cheaply and reproducibly, without the use of carcinogenic chloromethyl ethers. It has been established that halogenated polyethers, preferably epichlorhydrin polymers, can be treated with tertiary amines together with inert polymers to produce such anion-exchanging molded bodies by a phase-inversion process or evaporation of the solvent. These molded bodies can be in the form of blocks, balls or films.

The dispersant substances include compositions including a copolymer of two different conjugated dienes, a copolymer of a p-alkylstyrene and a conjugated diene, or a homopolymer of a conjugated diene. The polymers are selectively hydrogenated to produce polymers which have highly controlled amounts of unsaturation, permitting highly selective functionalization. Also provided are lubricant fluids, such as mineral and synthetic oils, which have been modified in their dispersancy and/or viscometric properties by means of the dispersant substances of the invention. Also provided are methods of modifying the dispersancy and/or viscometric properties of lubricating fluids such as mineral and synthetic lubricating oils.
