Patent number: 5274028Abstract: In an improved method for producing a surface graft of a hydrophilic polymer upon a preformed solid or semi-solid polymer substrate having hydroperoxide groups along its surface, n-vinyl pyrrolidone is utilized as the surface-grafting monomer, the substrate is selected to be insoluble in n-vinyl pyrrolidone, and the polymerization is carried out in aqueous alkaline conditions utilizing a combination of metal salts to provide a variable valence metal ion in a reduced state capable of oxidizing to suppress homopolymerization of the monomer in the solution. When the substrate is at least partially soluble in the n-vinyl pyrrolidone, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer having a higher reactivity with the substrate than n-vinyl pyrrolidone is added to the alkaline polymerization solution as a "seeding" monomer. Patent number: 5225498Abstract: Improved acoustic damping materials comprise interpenetrating polymer netks having a soft polymer component and a hard polymer component. The soft polymer component, constituting from 50 to 90, preferably 70, percent by weight of the material, is made by polymerizing an aromatic diisocyanate with a polyalkylene ether glycol, and the hard polymer component is a vinyl ester polymer made by polymerization of a vinyl ester resin such as the acrylate or methacrylate ester of the diglycidyl ether of a polyphenol. Optionally, the vinyl ester resin may be brominated, whereby increased fire retardance is conferred upon the interpenetrating polymer network. The mixture is cured at room temperature.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 1991Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the NavyInventors: Usman A. Patent number: 5225491Abstract: This invention relates to a comb-shaped graft copolymer, to a process for making the comb, and to a polymer blend made with the comb. The comb is made by a free radical polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer with a macromolecular monomer ("macromer" for brevity) of a haloalkylene oxide ("HAO" for brevity) homopolymer, random or block copolymer. The comb copolymer and blends of the comb with a polymer(s) may be cured. A comb with a terminal acrylyl or methacrylyl group or "head" and pendant polyether chains, which always include some HAO repeating units, may be made in an emulsion or suspension polymerization process which provides a comb having adequately high molecular weight so that the comb may be used in blends. The preferred comb of epichlorohydrin has a (meth)acrylyl head at one end, through which it (the macromer) is polymerizable, and a terminal hydroxyl (OH) group, or an end-capping group derived from the OH group at the other end.Type: GrantFiled: October 14, 1992Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Assignee: The B. Patent number: 5208314Abstract: The use of a monomer as the solvent in both components of a urethane polymerization system eliminates the need for the expenditure of much energy to remove solvent from the cured resin. The exotherm of the urethane cure supplies the heat for the activation of a relatively thermally stable free radical catalyst which then catalyzes the curing of the monomer. The two component system is stable in storage.Type: GrantFiled: November 6, 1991Date of Patent: May 4, 1993Assignee: DAP Products Inc.Inventor: Gary L. Linden

Patent number: 5202394Abstract: Graft polymers in which carboxylic acid vinyl esters and if appropriate other ethylenically unsaturated monomers are grafted polymerically onto polyurethane graft bases by means of grafting polymerization initiated by free radicals, and hydrolysis products of the graft polymers can be obtained by grafting carboxylic acid vinyl esters with 3 to 20 carbon atoms and if appropriate other ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers, which are copolymerizable if appropriate, in amounts of 10 to 99% by weight, based on the graft polymer, onto a polyurethane graft base by grafting polymerization initiated by free radicals, and if appropriate subsequently partly or completely hydrolyzing the vinyl ester units and if appropriate other hydrolyzable monomer units in the grafted-on polymer radicals of the graft polymers by hydrolysis and/or alcoholysis. Preferred vinyl esters to be grafted on are vinyl acetate and/or vinyl propionate and if appropriate vinyl versatate.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 1991Date of Patent: April 13, 1993Assignee: Hoechst AGInventors: Matthias Kroggel, Karl J.
