Patent number: 4999415Abstract: This invention relates to aromatic polysulfone compounds and their manufacture. More particularly, this invention relates to functional group containing aromatic polysulfones, and their manufacture by metalation with organo-lithium compounds, of halogenated (e.g. brominated or chloromethylated) aromatic polysulfone compounds. The degree of halogenation of the starting material determines the sites that may be metalated, and the degree of metalation determines how many of these sites will be metalated. At least one of the metalated sites may be treated with an electrophile so that the lithium at that site is replaced by a residuum of the electrophile.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1988Date of Patent: March 12, 1991Assignee: National Research Council of Canada/Conseil de Recherches CanadaInventors: Michael D. Patent number: 4997894Abstract: Block copolymers of vinyl monomers and thioarylene segments are prepared from copoly(arylene sulfide-disulfides), i.e., copoly(arylene sulfides) having an appreciable quantity of disulfide linkages in the polymer chains. Such copoly(arylene sulfides) correspond to the structure [(--A--S--).sub.1-x (A--S--S--).sub.x ].sub.n, wherein X is in the range of 0.5 to 0.001 based on the combined number of (--A--S--) and (A--S--S--) units. In a preferred embodiment n is at least 200; however, polymers and prepolymers having a much lower degree of polymerization can be used, e.g., materials where n is about 25 or higher. To prepare the block copolymers, an unsaturated monomer capable of undergoing free radical addition polymerization under the reaction conditions employed is subjected to such polymerization in the presence of the copoly(arylene sulfide-disulfide) having the above formula. During the course of the polymerization, chain transfer occurs resulting in formation of the block copolymers.Type: GrantFiled: February 8, 1990Date of Patent: March 5, 1991Assignee: Eastman Kodak CompanyInventor: David M. Patent number: 4996271Abstract: Halogenation of Udel (trademark) and Radel (trademark) polysulfone occurs adily by electrophilic substitution. The reactive substitution position is situated ortho- to the aryl ether linkage in the Bisphenol-A portion of the repeat units. Halogenated polysulfones are obtained by reaction of the polymer with elemental halogen. Thus, a solution of Udel polysulfone in chloroform, treated with excess bromine at room temperature, gives dibrominated polysulfone III in high yield. The degree of substitution after 18-24 hours is typically 1.80 to 2.05 by bromine analysis. Similar results are obtained by reaction of the polymer with elemental chlorine. Lower degrees of substitution are obtained with shorter reaction times or using lesser amounts of halogen.Type: GrantFiled: December 7, 1988Date of Patent: February 26, 1991Assignee: National Research Council of Canada/Conseil de Recherches CanadaInventors: Michael D. The basic additive is selected from the group consisting of inorganic hydroxides, inorganic oxides and organic metal salts wherein the metals are from Group IA, IIA, or IIB and the salts are of carboxylic acids and phenols. The product compositions are suitable for injection molding, film forming and fiber spinning processes.Type: GrantFiled: April 4, 1988Date of Patent: February 6, 1990Assignee: Phillips Petroleum CompanyInventors: Michael C. Yu, Lacey E. Scoggins, Jerry O. Reed

Patent number: 4894419Abstract: A biaxially-stretched film is made of a resin composition composed of 100 parts by weight of a substantially linear poly(arylene sulfide) having a melt viscosity of at least 1,000 poises and 0.5-80 parts by weight of a styrene-based resin. The film is produced by diluting a master batch, which has been prepared in advance and is composed of the poly(arylene sulfide) and styrene-based resin, with an additional supply of the poly(arylene sulfide) so as to prepare a resin composition containing the polystyrene-based resin in an amount of 0.5-80 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the poly(arylene sulfide), and then biaxially stretching the thus-prepared resin composition.Type: GrantFiled: May 6, 1988Date of Patent: January 16, 1990Assignee: Kureha Kagaku Kogyo K.K.Inventors: Toshiya Mizuno, Yoshikichi Teramoto, Takeshi Saito, Juichi Wakabayashi
