    Abstract: A novel graft copolymer capable of imparting to a polyolefin when blended therewith high tensile modulus and high sag resistance without increasing melt viscosity, and a method of making the same. The graft copolymer is a polyolefin having a relatively high weight-average molecular weight methacrylate polymer grafted thereto. The graft copolymer is formed by dissolving or swelling a non-polar polyolefin in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, heating to dissolve the polyolefin, and while stirring the mixture, adding a methacrylate monomer, together with an initiator to produce a constant, low concentration of radicals, to form a graft copolymer with a high molecular weight polymer chain covalently bonded or grafted to the polyolefin backbone. The graft copolymer can be separated from the solvent, isolated by volatilizing the solvent, for example in a devolatilizing extruder, and extruded into a desired shape such as a sheet, tube or the like. This graft copolymer can be blended with a poolyolefin matrix.

    Abstract: Polymeric film which is a blend of about 10% to 65% by weight polyisobutylene and conversely about 90% to 35% by weight of polypropylene copolymer. The polypropylene is preferably a copolymer having about 70 to about 98 mole percent propylene moieties and conversely about 30 to about 2 mole percent ethylene moieties. Preferred films have a blend composition of 20% to 40% by weight polyisobutylene and 80% to 60% by weight polypropylene copolymer. It is also preferred that the polypropylene copolymer is 92 to 98 mole percent propylene moieties and conversely 2 to 8 mole percent ethylene moieties.

    Abstract: A thermoplastic composition containing a first phase of a polar thermoplastic polymer, a second phase of non-polar polyolefin incompatible therewith, and a vinylpyrrolidone grafted polyolefin at least at an interface to compatibilize the different phases. A mixed phase monolayer of the composition containing ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer blended with vinylpyrrolidone grafted polypropylene as the first phase, and polypropylene as the second phase, has good oxygen and moisture barrier properties for food packaging applications. Also disclosed is a tieless multilayer laminate of the composition having an interlayer of a blend of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and vinylpyrrolidone grafted polypropylene and outer layers of polypropylene. The laminate has good oxygen and moisture barrier properties for food packaging applications.

The polyvinyl alcohol graft terpolymer may be further subjected to a heat treatment to have better water resistance and mechanical properties due to the interchain ester linkage between the hydroxyl groups and the anhydride groups therein. Alternatively, the polyvinyl alcohol graft terpolymer may be reacted with an amine to produce a maleamic acid intermediate, and then dehydated to form a maleimide derivative.
