Patent number: 5229456Abstract: A novel graft copolymer capable of imparting to a polyolefin when blended therewith high tensile modulus and high sag resistance without increasing melt viscosity, and a method of making the same. The graft copolymer is a polyolefin having a relatively high weight-average molecular weight methacrylate polymer grafted thereto. The graft copolymer is formed by dissolving or swelling a non-polar polyolefin in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, heating to dissolve the polyolefin, and while stirring the mixture, adding a methacrylate monomer, together with an initiator to produce a constant, low concentration of radicals, to form a graft copolymer with a high molecular weight polymer chain covalently bonded or grafted to the polyolefin backbone. The graft copolymer can be separated from the solvent, isolated by volatilizing the solvent, for example in a devolatilizing extruder, and extruded into a desired shape such as a sheet, tube or the like. This graft copolymer can be blended with a poolyolefin matrix.Type: GrantFiled: January 31, 1992Date of Patent: July 20, 1993Assignee: Rohm and Haas CompanyInventors: Casmir S. The hair cosmetic is free from stiffness, stickiness, or excessive gloss imparted to the hair which are the defects of conventional hair cosmetics using only conventional film-forming polymers, and provides excellent hair conditioning and hair-resetting effects.Type: GrantFiled: June 11, 1990Date of Patent: August 13, 1991Assignee: Kao CorporationInventors: Takeshi Inoue, Tadasu Hikichi, Yukihiro Fukuyama, Akihiro Kondo

Patent number: 5039741Abstract: The invention relates to a mixture composed essentially of polyoxymethylene (component A), a rubber-elastic graft copolymer in which the particles have been formed from a rubber-elastic, single-phase core based on polydiene and a hard graft shell (component B) and, if appropriate, a polymeric third component (component C). The invention also relates to a three-component mixture of the components A, B' and C, the core, in the case of B', being preponderantly or entirely composed of poly(meth)acrylic acid ester or silicone rubber instead of polydiene. The shaped articles produced from these mixtures are particularly distinguished by good low-temperature impact strength.Type: GrantFiled: March 2, 1990Date of Patent: August 13, 1991Assignee: Hoechst AktiengesellschaftInventors: Karlheinz Burg, Harald Cherdron, Friedrich Kloos, Helmut Schlaf

Patent number: 5034281Abstract: The present invention provides resin compositions comprising a blend of two different saponified products of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers. The composition is much improved compared to a single EVOH in flexibility without adversely affecting the transparency and gas barrier property. Laminate films comprising at least one layer of said composition are excellent in resistance to dropping shock, ability to prevent air-back, skin-pack adaptability and shrink-packaging capability.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1990Date of Patent: July 23, 1991Assignee: Kuraray Co., Ltd.Inventors: Akihiko Kawasaki, Tohei Moritani

Compatibilized blend comprising skin polymer, ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer, and poly-2-oxazoline
Patent number: 5032434Abstract: A polymer blend comprises a skin polymer, an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and a poly-2-oxazoline. The polymer blend possesses good gas barrier properties and excellent mechanical strength. A particularly preferred blend comprises an improved reclaim layer of a six-layer composite sheet suitable for thermoforming into a food package.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1989Date of Patent: July 16, 1991Assignee: Aluminum Company of AmericaInventors: Isaac C. Patent number: 5010134Abstract: A polyvinyl alcohol graft terpolymer comprises 70-30% by weight of polyvinyl alcohol and 30-70% by weight of acrylate/maleic anhydride copolymer having 95-30 mole % of acrylate and 50-70 mole % of maleic anhydride, which is prepared by a condensation-coupling reaction through esterification being performed between the hydroxy groups of the polyvinyl alcohol and the anhydride groups of the acrylate/maleic anhydride copolymer. The polyvinyl alcohol graft terpolymer may be further subjected to a heat treatment to have better water resistance and mechanical properties due to the interchain ester linkage between the hydroxyl groups and the anhydride groups therein. Alternatively, the polyvinyl alcohol graft terpolymer may be reacted with an amine to produce a maleamic acid intermediate, and then dehydated to form a maleimide derivative.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 1990Date of Patent: April 23, 1991Assignee: National Science CouncilInventors: Wen-Yen Chiang, Chun-Min Hu
