  • Patent number: 3975338
Abstract: A vinyl chloride polymer for providing a vinyl chloride paste which has a good thermal stability, a stability to sol viscosity and an excellent air release capability in the natural state or in a short period of time under a moderately low pressure is produced by using, in the production thereof, as an emulsifying agent, the alkali metal salts and/or ammonium salts of a mixture of a major amount of olefin alkyl sulfonates and a minor amount of hydroxyalkyl sulfonates (hereinafter olefin alkyl/hydroxyalkyl sulfonates) having from about 8 to 20 carbon atoms, in the polymerization thereof or in the preparation of a vinyl chloride paste from the polymerized product.

  • Patent number: 3969329
Abstract: Water-soluble high molecular weight polymers, useful as coagulating agents, are prepared by initiating the polymerization of acrylamide or a monovinyl monomer mixture containing a predominant amount of acrylamide in an acetone-water mixture at a temperature of not lower than 5.degree.C but of lower than 25.degree.C in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol and a catalyst, the concentration of the monomer in the polymerization reaction mixture being 15 to 30 % by weight and the concentration of acetone in the acetone-water mixture being 15 to 35 % by weight, and continuing the polymerization reaction while controlling the viscosity of the reaction system by adding a water-miscible organic solvent having a small chain transfer coefficient to the reaction system with the progress of the polymerization reaction.

  • Patent number: 3962196
Abstract: Polymer deposit or build-up on the interior surfaces of a polymerization vessel during polymerization of monoethylenically unsaturated monomers in aqueous dispersion may be inhibited by adding certain heterocyclic compounds to the dispersion prior to polymerization.

  • Patent number: 3962197
Abstract: A non-continuous suspension polymerization process for the production of finely-divided, low molecular weight polymeric particles of an aryl monomer is carried out in a heated aqueous suspension media at a polymerization temperature above the glass transition temperature of the desired polymer. The monomer reactants and the polymerization initiator are substantially simultaneously introduced into the heated suspension media at a slow, substantially continuous rate over a time within the range of from 20 to about 85 percent of the total polymerization reaction time. The suspension media is subjected to high-rate shearing throughout the reaction.

  • Patent number: 3957711
Abstract: Aqueous dispersions of synthetic polymers have been made by polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers in water in the presence of a protective colloid which is a polymer of a hydroxyalkyl acrylate or methacrylate. Such aqueous dispersions are useful in paints, adhesives and textile applications.
