This copolymer possesses favorable properties characteristic of fluororesins, is soluble in organic solvents including aromatic solvents low in polarity, such as xylene, and is curable at relatively low temperatures. The copolymer is useful particularly as a paint vehicle. The water repellency of the copolymer in cured state can be enhanced by incorporating a fluorine-containing surface modifier in the copolymer.

The fluoroelastomer has excellent processability, e.g., excellent roll processability, mold release characteristics and metal-adhesion properties, and is capable of providing a vulcanized rubber having excellent mechanical strength and compression set resistance. The vulcanized rubber is advantageous in the manufacture of O-rings, oil seals, packings, gaskets, diaphragm materials and the like.

The fluorine-containing elaastomer of the present invention is excellent in resistance to heat and chemicals and is not only extremely excellent in compression set resistance properties and mechanical properties but also has a satisfactory workability. Further, by vulcanization of the elastomer, there can be provided excellent shaped articles such as rings, gaskets, seals, diaphragms and the like.

    Abstract: A fluoroolefin copolymer having an inherent viscosity of from 0.05 to 2.0 dl/g and composed of(I) 10 to 70 mole % of monomeric units derived from a fluoroolefin represented by the general formula ##STR1## wherein X is H, Cl, F, CF.sub.3, OCF.sub.3 or OC.sub.3 F.sub.7, (II) 5 to 60 mole % of monomeric units derived from a vinyl carboxylate represented by the general formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 represents an aliphatic, aromatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 17 carbon atoms,(III) 5 to 70 mole % of monomeric units derived from a vinyl ether having an alkyl group with 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and(IV) 0 to 30 mole % of monomeric units derived from a hydroxyl-containing vinyl ether represented by the general formula ##STR3## wherein R.sub.2 represents an alkylene group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
