Patent number: 5491174Abstract: Novel catalyst compositions comprising complexes of tin(IV) salts and amine compounds are used to prepare polyurethanes, polyureas, polycarbodiimides and polyisocyanurates. The complexes, which preferably employ primary amines, allow delay of gelation until they dissociate under certain reaction conditions. The complexes can be prepared neat or in situ in an active hydrogen containing formulation component. The complexes serve to delay gelation of the formulation because they can be prepared to be relatively stable to moisture and will predictably dissociate upon heating, either as a result of the exothermic nature of the reaction being catalyzed or with application of an external heat source. The catalyst compositions are particularly useful for preparation of carpet underlay and in other applications requiring significant delay prior to gelation.Type: GrantFiled: April 7, 1995Date of Patent: February 13, 1996Assignee: The Dow Chemical CompanyInventors: Laura A. Patent number: 5292278Abstract: Fecal leakage and contamination from the vent opening of an animal carcass during slaughtering and processing methods is reduced or eliminated by applying a curable adhesive composition to the vent opening and permitting the applied curable composition to cure to form a cured firmly adherent vent seal after slaughtering but prior to other processing steps. In a preferred embodiment, the curable adhesive comprises a cyanoacrylate adhesive which cures in a matter of seconds under processing conditions to form a cured vent seal which retains its sealing integrity even upon exposure to high temperature and high humidity environments encountered at downstream processing stations. The curable sealing compositions are safe in the fully-cured state and do not liberate undesirable materials during curing.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 1992Date of Patent: March 8, 1994Assignees: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of Agriculture, Oscar Mayer Foods Corp.Inventors: Norbert D. Patent number: 5239041Abstract: A process for preparing a polyurea reaction injection molded (RIM) elastomer is described. A hindered polyetherpolyamine is first obtained by reacting a polyol having two or more hydroxyl groups with an effective amount of long chain alkyl epoxide to give an at least partially hindered intermediate having hydroxyl terminations; and then aminating at least one of the hydroxyl terminations on the intermediate to primary amine groups to give an at least partially hindered polyetherpolyamine. The hindered polyetherpolyamine is then reacted with a polyisocyanate in the optional presence of a catalyst to give a polyurea RIM elastomer. The long chain alkyl group provides steric hindrance to the primary aliphatic amine group, which slows down the reactivity of the amine. The slower reactivity of the amine group is useful in RIM and RRIM compositions since it allows for longer shot or flow times, which in turn permit larger parts to be made from existing equipment.Type: GrantFiled: April 8, 1992Date of Patent: August 24, 1993Assignee: Texaco Chemical CompanyInventors: Robert A.
