Abstract: A system for assembling a container and closure comprising an expanding collet which has a plurality of pivoting collet segments, each configured to simultaneously pivot radially outward about a pivot point and comprising. The collet comprises a lip that is engagable with the rim of the open end of the container and an angled tip positioned radially inward from the lip and shaped to press a countersink portion of the closure against an interior wall of the container as the collet segments pivot radially outward. As the container and the chuck are brought together, the rim engages with the lips of the collet segments and causes the angled tips of the collet segments to pivot outward toward the interior wall of the container, thereby pushing the countersink portion of the closure against the interior wall of the container.

Abstract: The disclosure provides an automatic capping apparatus for placing a cap on the opening of a container and crimping the cap onto the opening to seal the container. The capping apparatus includes three operating stations through which the containers are moved on a conveyor -- an aligning station to position the container on the conveyor, a cap pickup and placing station to deposit a cap on the opening of the container, and a crimping station for crimping the cap onto the opening. Furthermore, sensing means are provided at the pickup and placement station and the crimping station to assure that the operation at those stations is successfully accomplished.
Abstract: A hand-held tool for crimping a cap on a bottle includes a handle with a lever member pivotally connected to one end thereof to move a plunger between advanced and retracted positions within a housing depending from the handle. Within the housing are a plurality of die segments for gripping around the neck of the bottle to crimp the lower edge of the cap beneath the lip of the bottle when the plunger is moved into its advanced position. Telescoped on the upper end portion of the plunger is a coil spring whose upper end urges against an annular shoulder formed around the upper end portion of the plunger and whose lower end engages a circular disk and urges the disk downwardly on the plunger. An annular skirt depends from the disk and includes an inner, generally frustoconical wall surface mating with a similarly shaped outer surface formed on the upper end portions of the die segments.
