Radially Reciprocating Jaws Patents (Class 53/353)
  • Patent number: 7509791
Abstract: A top sealer for a gable top package having a sealed top fin includes an arm support and a pair of opposing arms pivotally mounted to the arm support. The arms each have a sealing jaw at about an end thereof. The arms are pivotal to move the sealing jaws toward and away from one another through an arc. The arm support is linearly movable toward and away from the package, as the arms pivot, to move the sealing jaws downward, toward the package, to alter the arc of the pivoting sealing jaws.

  • Patent number: 6076330
Abstract: The present invention relates to a powered crimping tool used to secure a cap onto a bottle or vial. The powered tool has a vertical housing portion which the user holds to activate the crimping action. The crimping action results from a motor causing a plunger to move downward, thereby initially closing a plurality of jaws and continuing downward to cooperate with the jaws to secure the cap on the bottle or vial. Means are provided to adjust the starting point of the crimping cycle or the plunger upper limit as well as the finishing point of the crimping cycle or the plunger lower limit.

  • Patent number: 6044626
Abstract: A chuck (10) has a jaw bell (20), a lower bell portion (22) surrounding a plurality of jaws (40) and a hub (28) surrounding an upper portion of a jaw stem (60). A second portion of the jaw stem extends beyond a jaw bell hub (28) and is surrounded by a compressed jaw stem spring (76). The jaw stem spring is retained between a bell hub collar (34) and a jaw stem collar (70). The force of the jaw stem spring holds the jaw bell around the jaws, holding the jaws in a closed position. A stripper (80) has an upper end (82) carried within the jaw stem. A stripper spring (90) located above the upper end of the stripper is compressed and surrounded by the jaw stem. The lower end of the stripper has a disk (84) with a frusto-conical cross-section in slidable contact with the jaws. The jaw stem spring exerts more force downward on the jaw bell than the stripper spring exerts downward on the stripper to hold the jaw bell around the jaws and the jaws closed.

  • Patent number: 5913798
Abstract: In can production, a press apparatus is provided for tightly connecting a first contact surface of the can wall running around an axis to a second contact surface of a base, a lid or a closure membrane. If the press parts (16) are arranged essentially fixed in the axial direction or are held in a radial guide and can be moved radially by an actuating element (8) displaceable in the axial direction, the can need not also be moved during pressing. The contact regions of the can wall and of the separation element are guided in the region with the press surfaces. The end face of the can rests against a stop which is connected to the radial guide for the press parts and is immobile at least during the pressing process. Owing to the conical abutting region (18) between the actuating element (8) and the press parts (16), these can be pressed outward by means of an axial movement of the actuating element (8).

  • Patent number: 5365718
Abstract: Bottles are closed with capsules whose free end segment is crimped over the top of the bottles. To avoid abrasion and turbulence, the end segment of the cap is deformed by a simultaneous, uniform upsetting of its entire circumference in a female die. An apparatus for carrying out the invention has a female die that is split into two parts, with cylindrical bores and with a constricting rib on a bottom portion which fits around the neck of the bottles. The rib has a concavely rounded side upon which the end segment of the cap, is thrust against and is deflected toward the bottle. The female die is split into two jaws that can be pivoted toward one another and whose opening and closing motion is coupled to the motion of an axially displacable male dies that displace the capsules in the female die for sealing the capsules onto the bottle.

  • Patent number: 5327697
Abstract: An improved chuck for a bottle capper having a torque trigger with vertically set trigger pins capable of withstanding high torques prior to shearing. Further an apparatus to precisely set the application torque of the capping chuck is provided. This apparatus uses a stem head about which a clamp collar and a scale collar are placed. The clamp collar rides below the scale collar and receives the spring. The scale collar is situated above the clamp collar and provides index markings by which to adjust the clamp collar rotationally around the stem head thereby increasing or decreasing the application torque.

  • Patent number: 5220767
Abstract: A "device for applying a cap and seal to the mouth of a bottle whereon an interference boss is provided for said seal" comprising a cylindrical body [1] having upper means [2] for fitting it to a conventional machine so that the assembly may, simultaneously, be rotated and moved alternately upward and downward. Means [3] are provided on the inside thereof to enable stable penetration and ejection of a non-descript cap and seal, the latter being steadied by movable external means [4] duly protected by an outer enclosure [5]. In this way, a cap is screwed onto a conventional bottle with a seal coupled to an interference boss provided on the neck of the said bottle.

  • Patent number: 5152120
Abstract: A latex lid mounting apparatus includes a seat body and a lid accommodating device with a replaceable lid container. A beverage cup is placed on a cup positioning plate. Lids are superposed in the container. An ascending assembly activates a lid holding unit to move up and down between an upper limit position and a lower limit position. The lid holding unit includes an outer ring, an inner ring journalled in the outer ring, several links connected to the inner and outer rings, and a plurality of paw elements carried on the inner and outer rings. A rotation control device regulates relative rotation between the inner and outer rings, so as to move the paw elements between an inner limit position and an outer limit position. Under the guidance of the rotation control device, the lid holding unit holds the lowermost lid immediately before reaching the upper limit position, while covering the open upper end of the cup with the lid immediately before reaching the lower limit position.

  • Patent number: 4987722
Abstract: A crimper in which jaws are swung into crimping engagement with a bottle cap in response to downward movement of a plunger. Downward movement of the plunger is effected by a lever which is located below a handle joined to the body of the crimper. When the handle and the lever are squeezed, the lever is pulled upwardly toward the handle to actuate the crimper and, at the same time, the handle and the body are pressed downwardly to keep the crimper stable on the bottle. The length of the stroke of the lever may be changed by varying the setting of an adjusting screw which is carried by the lever.

  • Patent number: 4771588
Abstract: A machine for automatic sealing of sterile bottles in a bottle filling plant is proved enabling high capacity. The machine has fluid powered means to axially displace a die forming means between a position above said bottle and a position surrounding a cap in the bottle mouth. Telescopically displaceable means are also provided to close said die forming means radially around the neck of said bottle and, after execution of said sealing, to open said die forming means radially. The machine also includes telescopically displaceable plunger means to apply axial pressure towards the top of the cap pressing it down into the die forming tool against the action of a resilient plug in the mouth of the bottle.

  • Patent number: 4745729
Abstract: A screw head on a container-closing machine has jaws that are pivotable on a holder to grasp a closure cap and hold the cap tightly so that the cap can be screwed onto a container. For pivoting the jaws, the jaws are connected to levers, which rest on an actuating cone that is displaceable coaxially in the holder. The actuating cone is integrally connected to a piston of a cylinder-piston unit, which is likewise disposed coaxially in the holder and the piston is operable by a controlled fuel supply.
