    Abstract: A chuck (10) has a jaw bell (20), a lower bell portion (22) surrounding a plurality of jaws (40) and a hub (28) surrounding an upper portion of a jaw stem (60). A second portion of the jaw stem extends beyond a jaw bell hub (28) and is surrounded by a compressed jaw stem spring (76). The jaw stem spring is retained between a bell hub collar (34) and a jaw stem collar (70). The force of the jaw stem spring holds the jaw bell around the jaws, holding the jaws in a closed position. A stripper (80) has an upper end (82) carried within the jaw stem. A stripper spring (90) located above the upper end of the stripper is compressed and surrounded by the jaw stem. The lower end of the stripper has a disk (84) with a frusto-conical cross-section in slidable contact with the jaws. The jaw stem spring exerts more force downward on the jaw bell than the stripper spring exerts downward on the stripper to hold the jaw bell around the jaws and the jaws closed.

    Abstract: In can production, a press apparatus is provided for tightly connecting a first contact surface of the can wall running around an axis to a second contact surface of a base, a lid or a closure membrane. If the press parts (16) are arranged essentially fixed in the axial direction or are held in a radial guide and can be moved radially by an actuating element (8) displaceable in the axial direction, the can need not also be moved during pressing. The contact regions of the can wall and of the separation element are guided in the region with the press surfaces. The end face of the can rests against a stop which is connected to the radial guide for the press parts and is immobile at least during the pressing process. Owing to the conical abutting region (18) between the actuating element (8) and the press parts (16), these can be pressed outward by means of an axial movement of the actuating element (8).

    Abstract: Bottles are closed with capsules whose free end segment is crimped over the top of the bottles. To avoid abrasion and turbulence, the end segment of the cap is deformed by a simultaneous, uniform upsetting of its entire circumference in a female die. An apparatus for carrying out the invention has a female die that is split into two parts, with cylindrical bores and with a constricting rib on a bottom portion which fits around the neck of the bottles. The rib has a concavely rounded side upon which the end segment of the cap, is thrust against and is deflected toward the bottle. The female die is split into two jaws that can be pivoted toward one another and whose opening and closing motion is coupled to the motion of an axially displacable male dies that displace the capsules in the female die for sealing the capsules onto the bottle.

Under the guidance of the rotation control device, the lid holding unit holds the lowermost lid immediately before reaching the upper limit position, while covering the open upper end of the cup with the lid immediately before reaching the lower limit position.

    Abstract: A crimper in which jaws are swung into crimping engagement with a bottle cap in response to downward movement of a plunger. Downward movement of the plunger is effected by a lever which is located below a handle joined to the body of the crimper. When the handle and the lever are squeezed, the lever is pulled upwardly toward the handle to actuate the crimper and, at the same time, the handle and the body are pressed downwardly to keep the crimper stable on the bottle. The length of the stroke of the lever may be changed by varying the setting of an adjusting screw which is carried by the lever.
