The solutions according to the invention clearly are more durable and contain less H.sub.2 S than comparable known solutions of the art.

    Abstract: An inflatable wrapping apparatus comprises a substantially self supporting base for placing an article to be wrapped thereon, and an inflatable wrap attachable to the base for decoratively wrapping and securing the article in place. A periphery of a first portion of the wrap is matably attachable to a periphery of the base for enabling the first portion to substantially encompass and cover the article thereon. The first portion of the wrap separates the article from a second portion of the wrap, and the second portion has a dimension greater than the first portion. Upon inflating the wrap, the first portion inflates in a direction toward the base to substantially engulf and secure the article in place, and the second portion of the wrap inflates in a direction away from the base to provide a decorative feature of the wrap. In an alternate embodiment, the inflatable wrap is coupled to the base by an adjoining edge, providing a simple, single component wrapping apparatus.

    Abstract: A method of packaging a food product employing a tray having side walls defining a cavity in an outwardly directed flange extending around the perimeter of the tray, the flange being adapted to receive a pair of membranes to enclose the tray. The lower membrane is the more permeable of the two. It may be attached to a first surface of the flange. The second membrane is attached to a second outer surface of the flange without direct connection except through the tray to the more permeable membrane. The two connection surfaces may be separated by a depression to facilitate the cutting away of the material forming the more permeable membrane in a continuous manufacturing process. With the less permeable membrane in place, a desired gaseous environment may be maintained within the package. When it is desired to change the gaseous environment, the upper less permeable membrane may be peeled away allowing gaseous communication through the lower more permeable membrane.

    Abstract: A continuous web of wrapping material for catamenial tampons or other commodities is advanced lengthwise first through a station where it is acted upon by a perforating knife to weaken longitudinally spaced-apart portions of the web transversely of the direction of advancement. The web is thereupon converted into a continuous tubular body and the leader of the tubular body is engaged by a pair of rolls which pull the leader in the direction of lengthwise advancement of the web in order to break the material of the web along successive weakened portions. The thus obtained discrete tubular envelopes are moved sideways, one end portion of each envelope is closed, a commodity is introduced through the other end portion, and the other end portion is closed to confine the commodity at both ends. Such mode of making tubular envelopes ensures that the material of the web is not wasted at all and that the envelopes need not be stored prior to reception of commodities.

The fluid may be an oil having a boiling point and vapor pressure sufficient to promote vaporization of the oil at room temperature. The vaporizable oil can function as a corrosion inhibitor making the sheet useful for wrapping metallic articles. A surfactant may also be added to the sheet to enhance corrosion inhibition. The sheet comprises a homogenous mixture of a polyolefin-based component and an inert filler. The sheet may be used alone or as one component of a composite that includes materials that have other desirable properties. The composite may be assembled into a container, such as a gun case.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for wrapping a load conforming generally to a rectangular solid, such as a cotton bale. Lengths of wrapping film from two rolls are welded to form a predraped wall of such film, into which the load is conveyed to cover its front face and its lateral faces, whereupon the welded lengths are welded again behind the bale and are severed from such rolls. As the load is conveyed, a length of wrapping film from a third roll is wrapped in a spiral pattern so as to cover the upper, lower, and lateral faces of the load. Moreover, generally V-shaped perforations pointing toward the front face are formed in the lateral faces, by means of perforating mechanisms. Each mechanism comprises a pivotal arm biased toward the load, a wheel rotatable on the arm, and perforating cutters extending radially from the wheel, in two circumferential arrays.

In use, the collapsed portion (14) of a bag (10) is inserted into a nursing bottle (16) and the formula (20) caused to flow into the collapsed portion (14) located within the bottle (16). The former filled portion (12) is removed to provide an opening to the formula (20) in the bag (10), and the free end is located between a cap (26) holding a teat (28) and the neck (18) of the bottle (16). The formula (20) may have an increased initial vitamin content to allow for loss of vitamins during storage.

The bag itself may be printed using a lower resolution technique such as rubber plate printing.

    Abstract: A container system which is environmentally controlled for the packaging and shipment of vegetables, and particularly of lettuce, such as iceberg lettuce. The packaging relies upon a reusable paperboard container which is of a polygonal shape, such as an octagonal shape, providing a large number of corner margins which afford strength in stacking of like containers on pallets. A plastic liner is disposed within the paperboard container and receives the vegetables such as the heads of lettuce. This liner is evacuated through a small incision made in the liner and the liner is sealed, or the former air atmosphere is replaced with a modified atmosphere, such as a high carbon monoxide concentration or nitrogen atmosphere, and thereafter, the opening is sealed. The modified atmosphere precludes the oxidation and deterioration of the lettuce or other vegetable product. In a more preferred embodiment, a pair of plastic liners, comprising inner and outer liners, are employed.

    Abstract: A suture material pack for surgical suture material. The pack includes a folding card with a base plate and a pair of cover plates adjoining the same in the longitudinal direction. Projecting to one side from the base plate, there is a first holding plate over which a second holding plate may be folded. The holding plates enclose the suture material and they are shorter than the suture material loop. During the placing of the suture material and the closing of the holding plates, the suture material loop can be held at the ends. The cover plates and are then folded onto the base plate and the holding plate folded thereon so that the suture material is protected. The folding card is welded into a foil sheath that is torn open to take out the filament. In doing so, a flap provided at the second cover plate is torn off so as to expose the filament end.

A nozzle for injecting a trace amount of helium at a pressure preferably below 1 mm Hg into the bag after evacuation of the gases and before sealing of the bag may be provided if desired.

    Abstract: A method for assembling a vacuum insulation panel is provided which includes the steps of: loading a quantity of microporous powder into a gas permeable pouch; pressing the pouch into a desired form; sealing the pouch; heating the powder to a temperature elevated above standard room temperature; inserting the pouch into a gas impermeable bag while the pouch and powder remain at the elevated temperature; evacuating gases from the powder pouch while it is at the elevated temperature; evacuating gases from the bag; and sealing the gas evacuated bag with the gas evacuated pouch therein to form a vacuum insulation panel. The heating of the powder may occur only just before insertion of the pouch into the bag, or may occur both before the powder is loaded into the pouch as well as just before insertion of the pouch into the bag. Further, a trace amount of Helium (at a pressure of approximately 1 mm Hg) may be put into the bag before it is sealed in order to permit testing of the sealed panel for leaks.

After cutting off from the roll 10, the film ends are then placed loosely over each other with an overlap by means of a second gripping arm 20, and fixed by strap hoops.

The can has over most of its extent a thin wall that is about 3/10ths of a millimeter thick but has a thicker wall adjacent the neck. A cardboard outer envelope closely surrounds and contacts and supports the can. The envelope is of a single piece having fold lines that define rigid panels.

The container comprises a base having a storage compartment, a tray pivotally mounted on the base for releasably holding a compact disc, and a lid pivotally mounted on the base for enclosing the tray and disc within the storage compartment of the base to protect the compact disc when not in use after purchase. A locking mechanism is provided on first ends of the base, tray and lid and lock the base, lid and tray in a generally flat extended end-to-end relationship for display with the tray being pivoted into the lid so that the compact disc is secure between the lid and tray. Graphic sheets are placed over the base and lid when in the extended and locked position, and then covered with a clear plastic wrapper for display. After purchase, the wrapper and graphic sheets are removed and the base and lid pulled slightly apart to an unlocked position.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus is for inserting a flat flexible bag having a rigid fitment into a bottle through a small bottle finish, and expanding the bag inside the bottle. The flat flexible bag can be grasped and oriented via the fitment utilizing a friction chuck. The fitment also enables the bag to be sealed to the bottle in an air-tight manner by interference fit. A biased plunger extends into the bag through the fitment. The plunger helps push the bag through a funnel while a vacuum is applied to the bag through the plunger. The funnel includes two angled plows which cause the bag to fold in a "C" shaped configuration. This insures reliable expansion of the bag upon releasing a blast of air into the bag. During the expansion process an air vent channel permits escape of the air between the bag and the bottle. An exemplary package formed utilizing this method and apparatus is a squeeze pump package having a thin film beam spring vent valve.

    Abstract: An earring storage apparatus consisting of a multiplicity of individual vertical panels that hang from retaining rods braced horizontally over the sides of an open container. Each panel consists of a fabric sheet having a top edge looped around a support rod, so that the panel can hang therefrom, and of a plastic net layer attached to the fabric. A panel may also feature horizontal or vertical straps or a fringe attached to the plastic net layer. Each mesh in the plastic layer provides a suitable support substrate for the prong of hook earrings, or most post-type earrings and tie tacks, while the straps and fringes can be used conveniently for clasp earrings, wire-type earrings, circular earrings, large hoop-style post earrings, cufflinks, tie clasps and other jewelry. The fabric sheet protects the front of the earrings in the panel immediately behind. Each panel is housed hanging vertically from the side walls of the open container in the same fashion as files are commonly hung in drawers for storage.

    Abstract: A method of handling materials requiring controlled handling and storage using a storage and transport drum assembly. The storage and transport drum includes a removable cover and a liner bag assembly. The liner bag includes bottom, side and top walls and a collar surrounding an opening in the top wall. The collar includes a groove for receiving a retainer ring that fits within a groove in the side all of a drum cover fitting. An exterior plug is provided for the drum cover fitting and an interior plug for the bag collar. The fitting, the collar, and the retainer ring are arranged such that the retainer ring retains the collar against unintentional separation relative to the fitting, but the bag and collar may be intentionally separated by pushing the bag into the drum when desired. The liner bag is assembled with the drum prior to filling. After the contents have been used the initial filler is notified and the bag is recycled.

The bottomless base and bottoms may be formed from material which enables the heat sealing of the bottom to the bottomless base. In addition, the material of construction is preferrable on which enables the autoclaving to sterility of the lens case.
