    Abstract: Disclosed is an imidazole azo dye of formula (I), which is useful for image formation and as a filter dye, which has a sharp absorption wave and which is fast to light, heat, air, moisture and chemicals. Also disclosed is a thermal transfer dye-donating material containing imidazole azo dye(s) of formula (I) preferably along with aminopyrazole azo dye(s) of formula (II). The material gives a high-density image with good color reproduction, and the image formed has improved storage stability. ##STR1## In (I), B and C independently represent a hydrogen atom or a substituent capable of being substituted in the imidazole ring; A represents an aryl or heterocyclic group; provided that when B is a hydrogen atom, C is not a hydrogen atom nor an alkyl group having from 1 to 3 carbon atoms; provided that when C is a hydrogen atom, B is not a substituted nor unsubstituted alkyl group; provided that C is not a mercapto group or an alkylthio group; and provided that B is not a carboxyl group.

C. in the presence of water and an inorganic base. N,N'-dialkyl-1,8-naphthalene diamines are prepared by hydrolyzing the 2,3-dihydro-1,3-dialkyl-2,2-dialkyl perimidines with strong aqueous acid in an aqueous organic solvent and removing a ketone by-product and the aqueous organic solvent by codistillation.

    Abstract: A dichroic dyestuff having the formulaQ--A--Zwherein:A is a poly(arylazo) linking group wherein the aryl comprises 6 to 10 carbon atoms and has 4,4'-azo linkages;Q is a bis-substituted aryl thiazyl substituent wherein the aryl comprises 6 to 10 carbon atoms;andZ is selected from the group consisting of naphthalene having an alkyl substituted amino in the 4 position, 2,3-dihydro-2,2'-substituted-perimidine and julolidine groups;forms guest-host combinations with nematic liquid crystals. These dichroic dyes have absorption maxima at wavelengths greater than 600 nanometers and transmit less than 50% of incident light having wavelengths between 600 and 700 nanometers. Thus these dyes, when combined with dichroic dyes which have absorption maxima between 400 and 600 nanometers, and nematic liquid crystals, are useful to provide electro-optical displays which change from clear to a neutral black color or vice versa when an electric field is applied to the electro-optical display.
