    Abstract: One embodiment shows a method for producing porous cellulose particles, including: (a) dissolving cellulose diacetate into a solvent to prepare a cellulose diacetate solution; (b) dispersing the cellulose diacetate solution into a medium immiscible with the cellulose diacetate solution to obtain a dispersed system; (c) cooling the dispersed system; (d) adding a poor solvent to the cooled dispersed system to precipitate cellulose diacetate particles; and (e) saponifying the cellulose diacetate particles.

The acid can be chosen particularly from among citric acid, adipic acid, azelaic acid and their mixtures. The process is advantageously performed at a temperature between 90° C. and 170° C., at a pH below 4 and during a total period between 3 minutes and 8 hours. The starchy material subjected to fluidification and stabilization can be cationic.

    Abstract: This invention describes bifunctional polysaccharides conjugated to both a chelating group suitable for the selective complexation of metal cations, and a targeting peptide specific for a cellular substructure. These bifunctional polysaccharides are primarily useful for the regulation, detection and quantification of metal ion levels, such as Ca.sup.2+, Mg.sup.2+, Na.sup.+, K.sup.+, or Li.sup.+, in specific cellular structures. Localization within the cellular structure is accomplished by the targeting peptide, whereupon the large, water-soluble polysaccharide prevents diffusion of the chelating group from the targeted site. When the target cell structure is the nucleus of a fertilized egg cell, the polysaccharide-chelator conjugate remains sequestered within the nucleus until the breakdown of the nuclear envelope, whereupon the reagent becomes sequestered into both daughter nuclei. This means of tracking daughter cells is practical even through several cell divisions.

    Abstract: Assay for determing the nucleic acid sequence in a region of a nucleic acid test substance having a known normal sequence and a known possible mutation at at least one target nucleotide position. Oligonucleotide probes are selected to anneal to immediately adjacent segments of a substantially complementary test DNA or RNA molecule. The target probe has an end region wherein one of the end region nucleotides is complementary to the normal or abnormal nucleotide at the corresponding target nucleotide position. A linking agent is added under conditions such that when the target nucleotide is correctly base paired, the probes are covalently joined and if not correctly base paired, the probes are incapable of being covalently joined under such conditions. The presence or absence of linking is detected as an indication of the sequence of the target nucleotide.
