  • Publication number: 20120283446
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for synthesizing bio-based pyridine and picolines, said method including at least the following steps: a first step involving subjecting a glycerol filler, created from the methanolysis of vegetable oils or animal fats, to a dehydration reaction leading to acrolein; a second step involving partial condensation of the effluent from the first step so as to separate a water-rich flow as well as an acrolein-rich flow; and a third step involving reacting the acrolein from the preceding step with acetaldehyde in the presence of ammonia so as to obtain, by means of a condensation reaction, the biobased pyridine and picolines.

  • Patent number: 6596872
Abstract: Described are preferred processes for preparing alkenyl-substituted nitrogenous heterocycles such as vinylpyridines, which comprise reacting a corresponding methyl-substituted heterocycle with a C1 compound such as formadehyde in the vapor phase over a zeolite catalyst having acidic and basic catalytic sites. The preferred zeolite is a medium-pore zeolite, for example having a constraint index of about 0.5 to about 12. Processes of the invention can be conducted as facile, one-step syntheses utilizing relatively low ratios of alkyl-substituted starting heterocycle (e.g. &agr;-picoline or &ggr;-picoline) to formaldehyde while nonetheless achieving high selectivities and yields of the corresponding alkenyl compound.

Abstract: Dioxane is prepared by reaction of polyethylene glycols in a catalytically active liquid reaction medium comprising a mixture of partial phosphate esters of a polyethylene glycol, and ammonium salts of partial esters of a polyethylene glycol. Along with dioxane, valuable co-products, including the compound 5-ethyl-2-methylpyridine, are formed from which the dioxane is readily separated in highly pure form. The catalytically active liquid reaction medium is derived from the reaction of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate with a polyethylene glycol at temperatures preferably in the range from 190.degree. to 225.degree. C. Temperatures of reaction between the polyethylene glycol and the catalytically active liquid reaction medium to form the dioxane and co-products are preferably in the range of from about 225.degree.
