Patent number: 8242287Abstract: The invention provides an improved method of synthesizing chemicals according to the ene reaction. The method addresses two problems that previously could not be addressed simultaneously, preventing charring of the reaction, and preventing gaseous degradation of the reagents. The method involves adding a boron bearing compound and an aromatic/antioxidant compound to the ene reaction. Combining these two compounds together inhibits charring and also causes an effect that neither compound can accomplish alone. The addition of these two compounds together also more effectively prevents either of the reagents from degrading than when either reagent is added alone. As a result the method reduces costs by reducing the amount of reagents needed for a synthesis and further reduces costs by eliminating the need to filter out char from the end products of the ene reaction. The method is particularly useful in the ene reaction synthesis of ASA from olefins and maleic anhydride.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2009Date of Patent: August 14, 2012Assignee: Nalco CompanyInventors: Bryan M. C. The feature of the process is that the maleic anhydride is added incrementally to the polybutene at such a rate that a single, homogeneous phase is maintained in the reactor throughout the duration of the reaction and the addition of maleic anhydride reactant is completed within 75% of the duration required to achieve maximum conversion of the polyalkylene of a given molecular weight. The polyalkylene derivative may for example be a polypropylene, a polybutene, a polyiso-butene or a polymer of 4-methyl pentene-1. By carrying out the reaction under these conditions the process results in a reduced amount of resin formed and enables more efficient use of maleic anhydride.Type: GrantFiled: November 12, 1982Date of Patent: September 18, 1984Assignee: BP Chemicals LimitedInventor: Alan Keasey

Patent number: 4450281Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the preparation of substituted carboxylic acids and their derivatives in which the synthesis reaction is carried out at least partially thermally in the presence of a furan-type compound. The furan-type compound substantially increases yields and reduces the formation of undesirable resinous by-products.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 1982Date of Patent: May 22, 1984Assignee: Chevron Research CompanyInventor: Robert H. Wollenberg

Patent number: 4431826Abstract: An improved process for the preparation of alkenyl succinic anhydride from maleic anhydride and a mixture of straight chain alpha olefins in the C.sub.13 to C.sub.22 range which comprises separating the alpha olefins into a lower boiling fraction and a higher boiling fraction, isomerizing the higher boiling fraction, recombining the two fractions and reacting them with maleic anhydride.Type: GrantFiled: August 20, 1982Date of Patent: February 14, 1984Assignee: Chevron Research CompanyInventor: William A. Sweeney
