  • Patent number: 6746517
Abstract: The use of fine fiber or fiber having a fiber diameter of about 0.0001 to 0.5 microns has become an important design tool for filter media. Common filter media have been prepared with a layer of fine fiber on typically formed the upstream or intake side of the media structure. The fine fiber increases the efficiency of filtration by trapping small particles which increases the overall particulate filtration efficiency of the structure. Improved fine fiber structures have been developed in which a controlled amount of fine fiber is placed on both sides of the media to result in an improvement in filter efficiency but a substantial improvement in lifetime.

Abstract: The present invention provides an air filter made from a composite comprising a substrate and a polymeric foam. The air filter can comprise a single layer. The foam has a density gradient where the lower density upstream portion of the filter can trap larger particles, allowing smaller particles to penetrate into the filter and be trapped by the higher density downstream portion of the filter. The density gradient arises from intercalation of the polymeric foam with the substrate. The media is particularly advantageous in high temperature (greater than 140 to 240° F.) systems. Such systems may include engine systems, gas turbine systems, and fuel cell systems. Filter arrangements may take the form of media packs having a circular cross-section or a racetrack shaped cross-section, or media packs formed in a panel configuration.

  • Patent number: 6524360
Abstract: An electret filter media includes an additive or mixtures thereof that enhance the charge stability of the media. The filter media achieves acceptable alpha values for a range of filtration challenges without significant decay in alpha values over time. Preferred charge additives include fatty acid amides and mixtures thereof.

  • Patent number: 6517612
Abstract: This invention is directed to a continuously cleanable, high performance filtration apparatus and a method for using the apparatus. The apparatus is a radial inflow centrifugal filtration device, which includes a filter element located within a chamber and rotatably coupled to a filtered fluid outlet in a bulkhead that abuts the chamber. The filter element is generally tubular, its side-walls encircling and, thus, defining an interior plenum. The filter element side-walls incorporate a filter media, preferably a laminated microporous membrane filter media. The filter element is rotatably coupled at the filtered fluid outlet by a seal which can maintain a seal as filter element rotates. Additionally, the device can include a boundary layer momentum transfer device made up of a plurality of stacked annular disks having central openings, each disk separated from adjacent disks by a desired gap. The central openings define a cavity in which the filter element is mounted.

  • Patent number: 6514324
Abstract: A washable air filter for removing particles from the inlet air to a heating and/or air conditioning system formed of an assembly of a central polymeric pad containing actively charged charge control agents of a first polarity, a polymeric net containing a dispersion of charged charge control agents of a second polarity in the polymer on each side of the pad and a stiff, deformable metal or plastic grill on each side of the net to form an assembly which can be corrugated and placed in a perimeter frame. The charging is preferably accomplished as the assembly passes over the surface of a roller with a conductive surface.

  • Patent number: 6494936
Abstract: A filter assembly comprises a housing (44) with an inlet (45) and an outlet (43). A filter module (10) is within the housing (44) and communicates with the inlet (45) and the outlet (43) such that fluid passing to the inlet (45) is filtered by the filter module (10) before passing to the outlet (43). The filter module (10) includes a filter membrane (11) of hollow cylindrical shape having an air throughput of at least 1300 normal cum/hr per 250 mm of the axial length of the membrane at an inlet pressure of 2 barg. Such a filter module (10) can be used in a process system (40) in which the module (10) supplies sterile air and is testable in situ.

Abstract: A fiber spinning device and process for manufacturing a web of fibers comprising a homogeneous mixture of fibers of different characteristics. Monocomponent fibers of different polymers can be extruded side-by-side from the same die system. Sheath/core bicomponent fibers can be alternated with monocomponent fibers formed of the same core polymer as used in the bicomponent fibers. Bicomponent fibers having a common core polymer and different sheath polymers can be extruded from alternate spinneret orifices in the same die plate. Multiple distribution plates are provided with surface grooves or depressions to direct polymer materials from independent sources to only selected spinneret openings in an array of spinneret openings while maintaining the polymers segregated from each other.
