Patent number: 4827008Abstract: Alkoxysilanes containing low levels of chlorine compounds are prepared by stepwise etherification of chlorosilanes with alcohols in liquid phase and removal of the resulting hydrogen chloride by reacting the alkoxysilane obtained, which still contains a small amount of chlorine compound, with a metal alkoxide in an amount which corresponds to a small stoichiometric excess based on the proportion of chlorine compound, and freeing the reaction product from the resulting salt.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 1988Date of Patent: May 2, 1989Assignee: BASF AktiengesellschaftInventors: Charalampos Gousetis, Knut Oppenlaender, Gert Liebold, Guenter Frey

Patent number: 4642363Abstract: A method for the continuous or batch preparation of trialkyl organo-oxysilanes by reaction of organic hydroxy compounds with trialkyl halogen silanes in the absence of acid-binding substances is disclosed. The organic hydroxy compound is added directly to the trialkoxy halogen silane in an amount which corresponds to no more than the stoichiometrically necessary amount. The trialkyl halogen silane, or the resultant mixture is always at the boiling temperature or above the boiling temperature in the gaseous state. The reaction mixture is subjected, no later than toward the end of the reaction, to a column distillation in which the column temperature is held such that the reaction is carried to the end within the column. In continuous operation, the trialkyl halogen silane is introduced in gaseous form into the bottom of a column and either kept under reflux or introduced into a reactor into which corresponding stoichiometric amounts of organic hydroxy compound are simultaneously introduced.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 1985Date of Patent: February 10, 1987Assignee: Dynamit Nobel AGInventors: Reiner Groh, Hans-Joachim Kotzsch, Hans-Gunther Srebny, Hans-Joachim Vahlensieck

Patent number: 4506087Abstract: A method for the continuous preparation of an alkoxysilane with hydrogen chloride contents of less than 20 ppm. In the method, the esterification is performed continuously in a reactor, and the raw esterification product is delivered to the top of a column. In this column, the reactant alcohol is vaporized and condensed at the top. The raw product drips from the top of the column to the bottom where it is collected as pure product. The method is suitable for the preparation of both tetraalkoxysilanes and of substituted alkoxysilanes. Partially condensed alkoxysilanes having a defined silicon dioxide content can also be made by this method.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 1983Date of Patent: March 19, 1985Assignee: Dynamit Nobel AGInventors: Peter Fischer, Reiner Groh, Hans-Joachim Vahlensieck

Patent number: 4471133Abstract: A method is provided for making polymethoxyhydrosilane in a continuous manner by effecting contact between a polychlorohydrosilane and liquid methanol in a vertical reactor resulting in the production of hydrogen chloride which is allowed to separate on formation and a bottoms reaction product consisting essentially of polymethoxyhydrosilane which is thereafter distilled to effect the separation and recovery of the polymethoxyhydrosilane. Polymethoxyhydrosilane is used as an intermediate for the production of hybrid methoxysilanes, such as polymethoxyaminosilanes and polymethoxysilylenolethers useful as end-capping silanes for making noncorrosive RTV compositions.Type: GrantFiled: May 31, 1983Date of Patent: September 11, 1984Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventor: John E. Patent number: 4428917Abstract: A process for manufacturing (very high purity) solare voltaic cell grade silicon involving the steps of reacting impure silicon tetrachloride with a lower molecular weight alcohol (e.g. ethanol) to form a silicon alkoxide (e.g. tetraethyl silicate) and then isolating a pure silicon alkoxide by filtration and fractional distillation. The purified silicon alkoxide can then be chemically reduced by reacting with a metal (e.g. Na) thus recovering high purity elemental silicon. The reaction byproducts (e.g. HCl and NaOR) can be used to regenerate the alcohol and resulting salt (e.g. NaCl) can be subjected to electrolysis to recover the metal and the halogen, thus leading to an overall process with total recycle of byproducts.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 1982Date of Patent: January 31, 1984Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventor: Edward J. Lahoda

Patent number: 4380660Abstract: A silicon halide such as methyl trichlorosilane is reacted with an alcohol such as isopropanol and an oxime such as methyl ethyl ketone oxime. Byproduct oxime hydrohalide is formed in all cases. With higher amounts of alcohol, alkoxysilane (e.g. methyl triisopropoxysilane) is the sole or major product. With lower amounts of alcohol, alkoxy-oxminosilanes (e.g. methyl diisopropoxy(methyl ethyl ketoximo)silane and methyl isopropoxy bis(methyl ethyl ketoximo)silane) are the major products.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 1982Date of Patent: April 19, 1983Assignee: Allied CorporationInventors: Chempolil T.
