  • Publication number: 20130345412
Abstract: The invention relates to a radical-initiated thiol-ene or thiol-yne “click” reaction that provides a simple and efficient route to diverse trialkoxysilanes. Trialkoxysilanes made in this way are obtained in quantitative to near-quantitative yields with high purity without any or minimal purification. A wide range of functional groups is tolerated in this approach, and even complex alkenes click with the silane precursors. The modular nature of these radical-based thiol-ene or thiol-yne “click” reactions allows a wide variety of pendant groups to be coupled to silane compounds that can then be coupled to a wide variety surfaces in order to modify their material properties. Consequently, such radical initiated thiol-ene and thiol-yne reactions provide facile and efficient methods for preparing an enormous number of surface-active functional trialkoxysilanes.

Abstract: A cylindrical reactor has walls and a base, forming a chamber in which permanently manufactured micelle array nanoparticles may be manufactured. The reactor has a disk impeller inside the chamber which serves to mix reagents in the chamber and a collar which facilitates the mixing process. The reactor is effective to input an amount of energy to the mixed reagents such that particle coagulation is prevented but formation of PCMA nanoparticles is permitted. A method for manufacturing PCMA nanoparticles is disclosed. Reagents, beginning with prepared core particles, are stepwise added to a reactor and mixed. A high sheer mixing unit is used to input an amount of energy to the mixed reagents such that particle coagulation is prevented but formation of PCMA nanoparticles is permitted.

The method comprises: a) providing an amine-modified silica particle; b) providing a solution comprising Au+3 ions; c) suspending the amine-modified silica particle in the solution comprising Au+3 ions; d) allowing the Au3+ ions to be adsorbed and/or immobilized onto the surface of the amine-modified silica particle; e) exposing the Au3+ ions immobilized onto the surface of the amine-modified silica particle to radiation to obtain bare gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) adsorbed and/or immobilized onto the surface of the amine-modified silica particle, wherein the bare AuNPs are without organic surface modifications; and f) reacting a ligand with the bare AuNPs adsorbed and/or immobilized onto the surface of the amine-modified SiNP and thereby obtain ligand-conjugated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).

Abstract: Process for the preparation of modified zinc oxide nanoparticles, which comprises reacting zinc oxide nanoparticles, which are dissolved in a solvent, in the presence of ammonia or amines with a tetraalkyl orthosilicate and optionally with an organosilane, with the proviso that the reaction takes place at a content of less than 5% by weight of water, based on the total amount of solvent and water. Modified zinc oxide nanoparticles which have Si—O-alkyl groups and are soluble in organic solvents, obtainable by this process for the preparation. Liquid or solid formulations which comprise modified ZnO nanoparticles. Inanimate organic materials, for example plastics or coatings, which comprise modified ZnO nanoparticles. Method of stabilizing inanimate organic materials against the effect of light, free radicals or heat, where modified ZnO nanoparticles, which optionally comprise UV absorbers and/or stabilizers as further additives, are added to the materials.

Abstract: Matrixes doped with semiconductor nanocrystals are provided. In certain embodiments, the semiconductor nanocrystals have a size and composition such that they absorb or emit light at particular wavelengths. The nanocrystals can comprise ligands that allow for mixing with various matrix materials, including polymers, such that a minimal portion of light is scattered by the matrixes. The matrixes can also be utilized in refractive index matching applications. In other embodiments, semiconductor nanocrystals are embedded within matrixes to form a nanocrystal density gradient, thereby creating an effective refractive index gradient. The matrixes can also be used as filters and antireflective coatings on optical devices and as down-converting layers. Processes for producing matrixes comprising semiconductor nanocrystals are also provided.
