The vertical stationary shaft has a non-rotatable ring gear at its lower aspect which is surrounded by the rotor which, by a cover plate on its underside supports spur gears which mesh with the ring gear and also cutting elements, the arrangement being that the cutting elements rotate much faster than the rotor and are caused to rotate by the meshing of their individual spur gears with the ring gear.

The units can be pivoted to an intermediate frame portion to extend laterally of that portion and hydraulic assemblies are connected to pivot each unit to a raised inoperative or transport position. The units each include a respective reciprocating cutter bar, and a crushing device with guides to move cut crop to the device. A drum mower can be positioned between the cutter bars. In another arrangement, a further unit can be attached at the front, with respect to the direction of machine travel. The frame portion includes beams that can form a sliding support for the frame portion and the units pivoted to that portion. Each unit can have vertical side walls and a driving transmission. Swath boards on the rear of each portion guide crop away from the tractor wheels.

The cutting edge of the cutter normally lies along a line which defines an acute angle with at least portions of the cutting edge of the cutting plate so as to effect a scissors action therewith, and which line also is angularly offset by more than 90.degree. with respect to a line passing through the center of gravity of the cutter and the axis of rotation of the carrier.

A row of rotors is mounted along the length of a laterally extending support that includes an elongated supporting plate pivoted to the main frame. Each rotor includes an upwardly extending shaft splined to a gear positioned beneath a hub and a cutting member. The drive to each rotor can be meshed gear wheels readily removable and replaceable as a unit or an elongated driving shaft housed in the channel section. The unit enclosed gear box can house all of the gear wheels or individual gear boxes can be fixed to the supporting plate. The cutting members can be then one or two blades or wires per rotor that are freely pivotable about upwardly extending axes located a substantial distance from the respective shafts which define the axes of rotation of the rotors.

A row of rotors is mounted along the length of a laterally extending support plate that is pivoted to the main frame. Each rotor includes a hub and cutter member assembly on an upwardly extending shaft engaged by a driving assembly. The driving assembly can be an elongated shaft that passes through a gear box for each rotor that is fastened to the support plate or a series of meshed gear wheels housed as a readily replaceable unit in a gear box and journalled to the support plate. The assembly includes a single blade pivoted to each hub eccentric with respect to the axis of rotation of the respective rotor and a counter balancing component. Reduction gearing interconnects the power take-off shaft to the shafts of the rotors through a main gear box to revolve their blades at high rates of speed, i.e. at least 6000 and preferably 8000 to 10,000 r.p.m.

Operation of the hydraulic cylinder can be under manual control by the person driving the mowing machine, and it can be automatic in response to operation of a sensing element carried by the machine frame forwardly of the swing arm for detecting obstacles by contact.

In the preferred arrangement, the support member is formed in the form of a disc or a blade which is also rotated and it carries a transmission for rotating at least the cutter and preferably also the countercutter and at a speed which is different from the cutter speed. Preferably, a plurality of cutters and counter-rotating cutters are supported on a rotatable support member or blade.

    Abstract: In a mowing machine of the kind comprising a frame adapted to be mounted on a tractor three-point linkage, and a plurality of cutting units connected to the frame, including at least two laterally spaced side cutting units and a center cutting unit positioned so as, in use, to cut the swath between the two swaths cut by the side cutting units, the side cutting units are mounted directly on the frame, so that in use part of the weight of the frame is supported by the side cutting units, and the center cutting unit is mounted at the rear end of a mounting arm connected to the frame by a universal joint, biasing springs being connected between the frame and the mounting arm to increase the pressure exerted on the ground by the center cutting unit so that it takes some of the weight of the frame from the side units and ensures uniformity of cut. The universal joint between mounting arm and frame also allows the center unit to take the optimum line when the machine follows a curved path.

The two convolutes join in the center of the mower and provide a continuing passageway into a rear mounted bag. The front of the bag is partially closed by a chute which, when the bag is not present, automatically falls into a guard position wherein all air flow, objects and grass are directed downwardly at the rear of the motor. The guard also provides, in this position, for distribution of the grass across the width of the mower span.

An upright handle and electrical control means are attached to the trimmer which allows the operator to operate the trimmer in an upright position.

The cutters are rotated in such a manner that those cutters which are disposed to the left side of a center line of the apparatus are rotated in a counterclockwise direction while those which lie to the right of the center line are rotated in a clockwise direction, thereby facilitating the conveying of the cut vegetation to either side of the apparatus and away from its center portion.

The rotary tools can have spaced apart groups of blades at different vertical levels and guide surfaces or further cutting or mowing elements mounted between adjacent tools. Also, the bladed tools can be fastened to alternate supports or every third support to rotate in the same or opposite directions from adjacent bladed tools.
