  • Patent number: 8291684
Abstract: In a swather formed by a tractor and attached heeder for cutting standing crop to form a swath, reel speed and optionally draper speed are controlled relative to ground speed by a control system including a manually operable input and display available to the operator. The control system can be used in an automatic mode to set an index value for an actual difference in reel speed relative to ground speed and to vary reel speed accordingly. In this mode a manually operable control varies the index. The control system can be switched by the operator to manual in which case the same control varies the actual reel speed. Minimum reel speed can be set by the same control and when operative the automatic system does not allow reel speed to fall below the minimum set value despite the values of index and ground speed.

A fore/aft position sensor is located between one of the fore/aft extending arms and the respective saddle. The fore/aft extending arm is provided with a slot that extends along the arm at an angle thereto. A sensing finger engages the slot and is coupled to a potentiometer by a sensing arm. As the fore/aft position of the reel changes, the relative position of the sensing finger changes creating a changing electrical output from the potentiometer. The resulting potentiometer voltage represents a fore/aft position signal that is directed to a controller.

  • Patent number: 6502379

The reel is rotatable about an axis generally parallel to the cutter bar and has a plurality of reel bats each having reel fingers projecting generally radially outwardly from the reel axis. The reel bats are pivotal each about a respective bat axis parallel to the reel axis so as to vary the angle of the fingers about the bat axis as the reel rotates. The reel co-operates with a cam carried on the header in generally stationary position so that each bat has a crank arm with a cam follower on the crank arm which follows the cam as the reel rotates and causes the required pivotal movement of the bat. The crank arm is arranged at an angle of the order of 135 degrees to the bat fingers so that the cam follower is angularly advanced in the cam relative to the bat axis.

  • Patent number: 6442918
Abstract: A crop harvesting header includes a reel mounted on a pair of forwardly and downwardly extending arms carried on a header frame above a table and cutting knife. The reel is rotatable about a longitudinal axis and includes angularly bats. The arms can be raised and lowered by hydraulic cylinders to raise and lower the reel. A linkage including a cable and bell crank is provided which is responsive to the forward and downward sliding movement of the main elongate beam along the support arms for simultaneously and automatically causing a raising movement of the reel support arms. The cable is slack over a rearward part of the movement so that no lifting occurs. The linkage is arranged relative to a forward and downward slope of the arms such that, over the forward part of the movement, the beam moves substantially horizontally to cause the reel to move forwardly of the knife without moving downwardly into engagement with the ground, for operating with the knife at ground level.

  • Patent number: 6138447
Abstract: A non-binding reel mount for a harvester platform includes added clearance between the sidewalls of a reel mounting bracket and the reel lifting arms. Side bushings are provided between the brackets and the arms at the center of the arms to prevent lateral motion of the brackets relative to the arms but enable twisting or rotation of the brackets relative to the arms. The non-binding reel mount thus enables one lift cylinder to be fully extended without causing binding between the reel mounting brackets and the reel support arms during a cylinder charging operation. The reel mount can be designed to provide the desired amount of vertical adjustment to the reel. In an alternative embodiment, a single bushing is provided at the top of the support arm that extends between the two sidewalls of the mounting bracket and wraps around the upper corners of the support arm to prevent lateral shifting while permitting rotation of the mounting bracket on the support arm.
