  • Patent number: 9126909
Abstract: We have now discovered a novel process for the removal or extraction of metal species from a variety of solid, liquid or gas phase materials. Metal species may be removed by contacting the material suspected of containing one or more metals with a thiolated fatty acid or ester thereof for a period of time and under conditions effective for the sequestration of the metal species by the thiolated fatty acid or ester thereof. The thiolated fatty acid or ester thereof comprising sequestered metal species may then be separated and recovered from the treated material. Moreover, following the treatment of aqueous liquids or mixtures, or suspensions or dispersions of solids in aqueous liquids, the resultant thiolated fatty acid or ester thereof comprising the sequestered metal species is insoluble in water and forms a separate layer from the aqueous liquid phase, which layer may be readily removed.

Abstract: A process for the purification and isolation of a chemical compound, by extractive solution crystallization. The process comprises combining in any order a first solvent, a second solvent, and a mixture comprising a chemical compound with at least one impurity. The second solvent phase extracts impurities out of the first solvent, and keeps the impurities dissolved to avoid their co-crystallization with the phenyl ester salt. Once the chemical compound has crystallized out of solution, it is collected, washed and/or dried. The second solvent may be added after the mixture containing at least one chemical compound is dissolved in a first solvent, as long as the second solvent phase is added prior to the end of crystallization. Advantageously, this invention combines the previously distinct steps of extraction and crystallization in one unit operation.

  • Patent number: 5705677
Abstract: A novel crystalline adduct of diphenyl oxalate and phenol in a molar ratio of 1:2 and having a high purity is produced by melting a mixture containing diphenyl oxalate and phenol at a temperature of 100.degree. C. or more; cooling the melt to a temperature of less than 100.degree. C. to allow a resultant adduct of diphenyl oxalate and phenol in a molar ratio of 1:2 to crystallize and deposit from the melt; and collecting the crystalline adduct. Diphenyl oxalate with a high purity is produced by melting the crystalline adduct to dissociate it into diphenyl oxalate and phenol, and evaporating away the dissociated phenol from the melt to collect the dissociated diphenyl oxalate.
