Abstract: The compounds are 4-aryl substituted buta-2,3-dienoic acids and esters thereof which may also be lower alkyl-substituted at any of the 2- and 4- positions, e.g., 4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-2-methyl-buta-2,3-dienoic acid. The compounds are useful as pharmaceuticals, e.g., as antiinflammatory agents and hypolipidemic agents.

Abstract: Hydratropic acid derivatives of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is H, alkyl of 1-4 carbon atoms, 2-acetamidoethyl, 1-methyl-4-piperidyl, or 2,3-dihydroxypropyl, and R.sub.2 is Hal, phenyl, 4-Hal-phenyl, 4-Hal-phenoxy, 4-Hal-phenoxymethyl, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthyl, 1-pyrryl, piperidino, isoindolino, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolino, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-quinolyl or 1-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-quinolyl, Hal being F, Cl, or Br, and the physiologically acceptable salts thereof, which possess cholesterol and triglyceride serum-level-lowering activity, can be prepared by reacting a phenol of the formula ##STR2## with a compound of the formula X--C(CH.sub.3)(C.sub. 6 H.sub.5)--COOR.sub.1 wherein X represents Cl, Br, I, OH, or esterified OH.

Abstract: Biphenyl esters of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is --CO--O-- or --O--CO-- and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each are alkyl or alkoxy of 1 - 8 carbon atoms, enlarge significantly the temperature range of the nematic phase of liquid-crystalline compositions without adversely affecting other properties.

Abstract: Derivatives of 2-hydroxy-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-(alkyl or trifluoromethyl)propionic acid bearing a phenyl or naphthyl group linked to the 2-hydroxy group either directly or via an intermediate methylene group. The compounds reduce the concentrations of cholesterol, total esterified fatty acids or fibrinogen in the blood plasma of test animals and some compounds show anti-arthritic properties.

Abstract: Phenylbutanol derivatives of the formula Z--C(CH.sub.3) (OH)--CH.sub.2 --Y wherein Z is 4-biphenyl or 4-phenoxyphenyl wherein the phenoxy group is unsubstituted or substituted by F, Cl or Br and Y is COOR.sup.2 or CH.sub.2 OR.sup.3 wherein R.sup.2 is H or alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms and R.sup.3 is H or alkanoyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and their physiologically acceptable salts, possess anti-inflammatory activity and are produced by (a) treating with a solvolyzing agent a compound of the formula Z--C(CH.sub.3) (OH)--CH.sub.2 --W or Z--CX(CH.sub.3)--CH.sub.

Abstract: A novel compound represented by the formula, ##STR1## WHEREIN R is a hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, said four R's being the same or different; R.sup.1 is hydrogen, an alkali metal, an ammonium group, a mono-to tetra-hydric aliphatic alcohol moiety having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, or an organic amine residue; n is an integer of 1 to 4; and R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are independently hydrogen or alkyl groups having 1 to 6 carbon atoms or R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 may form a ring when taken together. Said novel compound has properties similar to those of natural rosin or a disproportionated rosin, and is useful as a vehicle for coating compositions and printing inks, as an emulsifier for emulsion polymerization, and as a sizing agent.
