Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of reducing the total organic carbon (TOC) content of waste water in the course of the preparation of concentrated solutions or suspensions of anionic organic compounds, which method comprises increasing the concentration of an aqueous solution or suspension of an anionic organic compound in the form of its free acid or its alkali metal salt, having a salt content of less than 5% of extraneous salt by weight based on the total solution or suspension, by microfiltration, ultrafiltration and/or nanofiltration, a) the membrane pore size being so selected that compounds having molecular weights in the range from 300 to 1000 Daltons or higher are retained, and b) the content of anionic compound in the concentrate being so adjusted to from 10 to 50% by weight that the total organic carbon (TOC) content of the permeate is less than 0.

Abstract: An aromatic amino sulfonic acid compound is purified by a process including steps of:(a) dissolving the aromatic amino sulfonic acid compound in aqueous medium having a basic pH;(b) acidifying the aqueous medium with acetic acid to precipitate the aromatic amino sulfonic acid compound; and(c) removing the precipitated aromatic amino sulfonic acid compound from the aqueous medium.Using acetic acid in the process results in removal of more impurities and undesirable sulfate and chloride salts to provide an improved material for synthesizing dyes and pigments.
Abstract: The invention describes the synthesis and use of photoactivated (or caged) fluorescent dyes. Upon illumination at less than about 400 nm the caged dyes release highly fluorescent, water soluble hydroxypyrenesulfonic acid dyes according to the following equation: ##STR1## X, Y, and Z are independently sulfonic acid, a sulfonic acid salt, a hydroxyl group, or hydrogen, with at least one of X, Y, and Z being a sulfonic acid or sulfonic acid salt. LINK is either an ether linkage or a carbonate linkage. BLOCK is a caging group whose photolysis results in liberation of a free hydroxypyrenesulfonic acid dye.The caged fluorescent dyes are useful for application in aqueous solutions, including fluids of biological origin. The caged dyes of the present invention are especially useful for flow tagging velocimetry.
Abstract: This invention relates to novel arginine aldehydes, their salts and hydrates, which compounds selectively exhibit serine proteases inhibitory activity, are highly stable in aqueous solutions, and are useful for anti-trypsin and anti-thrombin activity.

Abstract: A salt forming compound represented by the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl or benzyl, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl, R.sub.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.18 alkyl or benzyl, X is hydroxyl or amino, and Y is hydroxyl or hydrogen and is not hydrogen when X is hydroxyl, usable in a toner for developing electrostatic latent images, e.g. comprising 0.5 to 5 parts by weight of the salt forming compound and 100 parts by weight of a resin.
Abstract: There is disclosed an improved semi-continuous and continuous process for the preparation of 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid by nitrosation of 2-naphthol, addition of bisulfite, acidification with mineral acid and reduction of the reaction product so obtained, which comprises charging the reactor with the nitrosating agent and simultaneously adding 2-naphthol and mineral acid simultaneously in separate streams in the semi-continuous process, or charging the reactor with the reaction mass and simultaneously adding 2-naphthol, mineral acid and the nitrosating agent in separate streams in the continuous process. The product can be further used, without isolation, for the synthesis of dyes.
Abstract: Process for the preparation of 1-amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid by treating 1-hydroxylamino-2-tetralone-4-sulfoniuc acid with an alkali metal pyrosulfite in mineral acid medium in the presence of catalytic amounts of a copper compound.1-Amino-2-naphthol-4-sulfonic acid is an intermediate for the manufacture of dyes.
