Abstract: Metal cord with a plurality of concentric layers, of the type rubberized in situ, i.e. a cord that is rubberized from the inside, during its actual manufacture, with a rubber known as a filling rubber, in which all or some of the gaps situated between the wires of the cord contain a thermoplastic elastomer of the unsaturated type, particularly an unsaturated thermoplastic stirene (TPS) elastomer such as an SBS, SBBS, SIS or SBIS block copolymer for example. Such a thermoplastic elastomer, used in the molten state, presents no problems of parasitic stickiness if the filling rubber overspills out of the cord following manufacture; its unsaturated and therefore (co)vulcanizable nature makes it extremely compatible with the diene rubber matrices, notably natural rubber matrices as conventionally used as calendering rubber in the metal fabrics intended for reinforcing tires.

Abstract: A steel cord (200) is described that is simple and cost effective to produce while solving some particular problems for the reinforcement of elastomer belts such as timing belts or the like. By appropriate choice of the lay length, the core filament diameter and the filament diameters of the first layer—the latter being larger or equal to the former—an aggregate gap can form in which intermittently a filament (210?) of the second layer gets entrained. This aggregate gap must be between 40 and 70% of the core filament diameter in order to obtain the desired effect of having a core filament (202) that is deformed with the same lay length and direction as the other filaments (204,210,212). A deformed core filament (202) suppresses the effect of core filament migration.

  • Patent number: 6630241
Abstract: A rubber-steel cord composite comprising a steel cord having, in a planar image of the steel cord formed by X-rays passing through the steel cord, a fraction R of the total area occupied by filaments of from 0.45 or more to 0.95 or less in an arbitrarily selected portion of the steel cord having a length of 15 mm in an axial direction of the cord, is provided. The length of 15 mm in an axial direction of the cord means a length of 15 mm in an axial direction of an actual cord and the fraction R of the total area occupied by the filaments is expressed as R=F/A, wherein A represents the total area of the cord and F represents the area of the cord occupied by the filaments. An object of the present invention is to provide a pneumatic tire for passenger cars that shows no separation of the interface of adhesion during use, particularly during use in the run-flat condition, and exhibits excellent durability.

  • Patent number: 6530410
Abstract: As the present invention there is disclosed a pneumatic radial tire comprising a carcass having a smaller tensile rigidity than that of conventional pneumatic radial tires by application of a steel cord having a smaller Young's modulus to the carcass or by application of a smaller amount of a high strength steel cord formed with carcass filaments having a greater tensile strength to the carcass while maintaining the necessary strength of the carcass. In accordance with the present invention, extension of the carcass increases and extension of a belt in the circumferential direction of the tire is suppressed when the tire is inflated by an inner pressure. As a result, compression stress working on the carcass when a vehicle turns decreases and buckling deformation of the steel cord can be prevented. Accordingly, durability is improved.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are a tire-reinforcing steel cord and a pneumatic radial tire using the same. The tire-reinforcing steel cord includes an inner layer consisting of 3 filaments and an outer layer consisting of 7 or 8 filaments and surrounding the inner layer. The inner layer and the outer layer are twisted in such a manner that they have the same twist direction and the same twist pitch length, whereby the number of the twisting steps in the manufacture of the steel cord is reduced, and also the penetration of rubber into the steel cord is improved such that the steel cord has an improved durability upon application to tires.

Abstract: A reinforcing steel cord for rubber products, such as steel belted radial tires or conveyor belts, is disclosed. This steel cord is improved in rubber penetration and ageing adhesive force relative to the rubber material. The steel cord is formed by twisting a plurality of brass coated external element wires around a flat and spirally twisted core, with the twisted direction of the core being the same as or opposite to that of the resulting steel cord. In the steel cord, the pitch of the twisted core is set to allow the core to be twisted 0.2 to 2 times within the pitch of the cord, thus preferably forming sufficient interspaces between the core and the external wires in addition to the interspaces between the external wires.

Abstract: A cut-resistant combined yarn is described that includes a wire component. Kinking and knotting of the wire component resulting from stretching of the wire component during knitting is avoided by encasing the wire component within a cut resistant combined yarn that has a higher stretch resistance than the wire component. The combined yarn includes at least one strand of stainless steel, at first non-metallic strand of an inherently cut-resistant material, and a second non-metallic strand of a cut resistant material, a non-cut resistant material or fiberglass. The non-metallic strands are air interlaced with each other to form intermittent attachment areas along the lengths of the strands. At least one or the other of the strands is a multi-filament strand. During air interlacing operation, the two non-metallic strands encase the stainless steel strand in the non-metallic strands at least in some of the zones.
