  • Patent number: 8931272
Abstract: A method for operating a turbocharged engine is disclosed. In one example, during a first condition an engine operation is adjusted in response to a turbocharger expansion ratio exceeding a first limit and during a second condition an engine operation is adjusted in response to the turbocharger expansion ratio exceeding a second limit that differs from the first limit. Degradation of the engine may be reduced under some engine operating conditions by adjusting engine operation in response to the turbocharger expansion ratio.

  • Patent number: 8919109
Abstract: A hydraulic drive system executing load sensing control is capable of efficiently combusting and removing filter deposits inside an exhaust gas purification device by pump output power increasing control when there is no actuator operation, eliminating interference between the actuator operation and the pump output power increasing control. A first solenoid selector valve selects between tank pressure and delivery pressure of a pilot pump. A second solenoid selector valve is arranged in a line leading the output pressure of a differential pressure reducing valve to an LS control valve for selecting between enabling and disabling of the load sensing control. When the exhaust gas purification device needs regeneration, a controller executes switching to make the first solenoid selector valve output the delivery pressure of the pilot pump as dummy load pressure and to make the second solenoid selector valve disable the load sensing control.

Abstract: Disclosed is a super-turbocharger system that increases power and efficiency of an engine. The system uses the exothermic properties of a catalytic converter to extract additional energy from exhaust heat that is used to add power to the engine. Compressed air is supplied and mixed with exhaust gases upstream and/or downstream from a catalytic converter that is connected to an exhaust manifold. The gaseous mixture of exhaust gases and compressed air is sufficiently rich in oxygen to oxidize hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the catalytic converter, which adds heat to the gaseous mixture. In addition, a sufficient amount of compressed air is supplied to the exhaust gases to maintain the temperature of the gaseous mixture at a substantially optimal temperature level. The gaseous mixture is applied to the turbine of the super-turbocharger, which increases the output of said super-turbocharger, which increases the power and efficiency of said engine.

Abstract: An exhaust system for use with an engine is disclosed. The exhaust system may have a first treatment device configured to receive a flow of exhaust from the engine and convert a first constituent of the exhaust to a second constituent. The exhaust system may also have a second treatment device located downstream of the first treatment device and configured to reduce the first constituent and the second constituent. The exhaust system may further have a flow regulator configured to selectively vary a rate of exhaust passing through the first treatment device, and a controller configured to operate the flow regulator such that a desired amount of the first constituent and the second constituent is received by the second treatment device.

  • Patent number: 8601799
Abstract: Disclosed is a construction machine which comprises: a command changing regulation section; a loading device for imposing, on an engine, a load for raising an exhaust temperature of the engine up to a value at which particulate matter accumulated in a filter is burnt; and an instruction section for instructing the loading device to perform an operation for loading the engine. The instruction section prohibits the loading device from changing a loading level on the engine, during a period where a manipulation-state detection section detects a presence of a manipulation of a manipulation section. The command changing regulation section is set to a changing permission mode for permitting a value of a command which is to be assigned to an actuator control valve, to be changed according to changing a value of a command to be output from a manipulation device, during a period where the loading level is constant.

  • Patent number: 8596062
Abstract: In an exhaust gas control apparatus for an internal combustion engine, including a supercharger which is provided in an exhaust passage at a position up-stream of a catalyst having an oxidizing ability; turbine rotation energy amount adjusting means (106) for adjusting an amount of energy of exhaust gas, which is used for rotating the turbine of the supercharger; and after-injection performing means for performing after-injection, when a work amount of the compressor is increased by the after-injection, the turbine rotation energy amount adjusting means decreases the amount of energy of the exhaust gas, which is used for rotating the turbine, in order to decrease the increased work amount to zero.

  • Patent number: 8561390
Abstract: An energy production and pressurized exhaust gas storage system including two combustion chambers aligned in opposition to each other, each of the two combustion chambers having a reciprocating power piston. A compression chamber is situated between the two combustion chambers and it includes a reciprocating compression piston. A shaft connects all of the pistons together. A solvent tank is connected to the two combustion chambers to receive the exhaust gas carbon dioxide. The solvent is preferably water maintained at about 32 degrees Fahrenheit and with a pressure above the water surface of about 100 pounds per square inch. Upon combustion, a pressurized carbon dioxide storage chamber receives compressed carbon dioxide from the compression chamber. Check valves are used to enable inflow of carbon dioxide to the compression chamber from the solvent tank and outflow of pressurized carbon dioxide in the compression chamber to storage.

  • Patent number: 8549838
Abstract: A method includes providing an internal combustion engine having an output shaft and producing an exhaust gas stream, providing an electric motor operatively coupled to the output shaft, and determining a regeneration state of an aftertreatment component that treats the exhaust gas stream. The method further includes determining an engine torque requirement such that, when the internal combustion engine achieves the engine torque requirement at a present set of operating conditions, a temperature of the exhaust gas stream will achieve an exhaust gas temperature threshold. The method further includes commanding the electric motor to apply a counter torque to the output shaft in response to the regeneration state indicating an active thermal regeneration event, where the counter torque comprises is high enough for the internal combustion engine to achieve the engine torque requirement. The exhaust gas temperature threshold may be a hold-warm temperature and/or a regeneration temperature.

  • Patent number: 8539770
Abstract: An internal combustion engine including an exhaust arrangement comprises a first exhaust duct and a second exhaust duct. A valve arrangement preferably comprising separate first and second exhaust valves associated with each cylinder, to selectively direct exhaust from engine to the first exhaust duct during a first exhaust period, and to the second exhaust duct during a subsequent second exhaust period. A turbine having an inlet is connected to the first exhaust duct; and a compressor drivingly connected to and driven by the turbine, has an inlet connected to second duct. The compressor, driven by the turbine extracting energy from the exhaust, reduces the back pressure in the exhaust system reducing pumping losses, with the second duct bypassing the turbine in the second exhaust period such that the turbine also does not increase the exhaust back pressure at least during the main second exhaust phase.
