Abstract: The method includes moving at least one of a first support and a second support to vary a position of the plurality of main blades and tandem blades relative to each other to control one or more flow control characteristics across the turbine. The turbine includes a nozzle having the plurality of main blades and tandem blades. The plurality of main blades are coupled to the first support and the plurality of tandem blades are coupled to the second support disposed spaced apart from the first support.

Abstract: A device and method measuring at least one parameter related to the blood of a subject, by emitting light with at least one emitter at least one wavelength within the spectral range of 380 980 nm toward a body part containing at least one wavelength. Spatially resolved reflectance measurements are obtained by capturing light reflected by the body part with at least one reflectance detector. At least one of the absorption coefficient and the reduced scattering coefficient of the blood component of the body part at each of the wavelengths is extracted from the measurements. The temporal derivatives of the at least one of the absorption coefficient and the reduced scattering coefficient is extracted, and at least one blood related parameter is calculated using the temporal derivatives.
Abstract: In an oil-coupling arrangement for transferring the drive from a driving shaft to a driven shaft, particularly for the propulsion of ships, the improvement is disclosed wherein the oil cup system has switchable vanes which can be switched from one position to another, and vice versa, so as to deflect the oil stream in the driving and the driven cup in such a way that the driven cup is compelled to rotate in a direction contrary to that of the driving cup.
Abstract: A hydrokinetic action brake for particular use in controlling the speed of a hoisting drum used in the drilling of oil and gas wells. The brake includes dual pocketed stator and rotor assemblies with a cylindrical member movable within the pockets to adjust the flow of the fluid within either the outer and/or inner pockets for varying load and speed conditions.
Abstract: A device for regulating the driving torque and energy absorption in hydraulic energy absorbing means such as employed in aircraft arresting mechanisms, consisting in a liquid reservoir housing in which a bladed rotor is rotative, said rotor having its blades surrounded by fixed vanes of a curvature different from that of the blades of the rotor. A ring is mounted above the blades, the ring having an annular groove or channel in which a channel-shaped capsule is positioned, the capsule being adjustable up or down in the groove, a rotative adjustment ring is mounted on a part of the housing and an outer ring carries rods that enter the housing to contact with the capsule, and the outer ring has parts engaging in guide means on the inner ring, whereby rotative adjustment of the inner ring causes raising or lowering of the capsule with respect to the rotor blades.
