Patent number: 7891183Abstract: The wave-based power generation system has a buoy or float retained by a cable that enters an underwater power generating station. The cable enters the station housing through an inverted U-tube having upturned inlet and outlet ports, which prevent water from entering the housing. The buoy cable passes over an inlet pulley assembly disposed within the U-tube and has its free end secured to a take-up reel or sheave. A driver pulley is mounted on a shaft coaxial with the take-up reel shaft, and is constrained to unidirectional rotation. Rotation of the driver pulley is coupled to a mainspring pulley and a timing pulley through an idler pulley. A mainspring is compressed by rotation of the mainspring pulley until a cam wheel coaxial with the timing wheel releases a brake, causing the mainspring to expand and rotate a generator shaft to produce electricity.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 2008Date of Patent: February 22, 2011Assignee: King Fahd University of Petroleum and MineralsInventor: Mustafa Ali Al-Huwaider

Patent number: 7827788Abstract: A tidal power generator has a floating vessel hull that is subject to rising and falling water levels so that the hull moves vertically up and down. Linear-to-rotary converters are coupled between the vessel hull and a fixed object. The converters allow the hull to move vertically while constraining the horizontal movement of the hull. The converters convert the vertical movement of the hull into rotary movement, which is then used to drive an electrical generator. A harborage is provided to protect the hull and the converters and to regulate the water level for the vessel hull as well as become a fixed object relative to the vessel from which a change in relative position causes power to be developed. If the hull is subject to tidal variations, vertical movement of the hull can be desynchronized from the tidal variations so as to store energy during slack tides.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2008Date of Patent: November 9, 2010Inventors: Robert B. Publication number: 20100170242Abstract: Buoyancy forces [N] and gravitational forces [N] of buoys in fluids are used as drive forces. Buoys are placed in one or more water-filled container/s. To use the buoyancy force [N], the buoys are connected to an energy storage device, herein springs. In addition, the buoys are temporarily connected to a reference system by either the container or a movable frame within the container. Publication number: 20080110168Abstract: Systems and processes for harnessing the dynamic energy of a fluid body may be used to generate electric power. In particular implementations, a system and process for harnessing the dynamic energy of a fluid body include the ability to follow a movement of a fluid body and pressurize a volume of fluid due to following the movement. The pressurized volume of fluid may be used, at least in part, to drive an electrical generator.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2007Publication date: May 15, 2008Inventor: Fernando Gracia Lopez

Publication number: 20080000224Abstract: A system is described for converting the energy contained in each ocean wave into mechanical energy used to drive an electric generator. The system is built around a large weight that sits atop an air-filled raft inside a chamber that is partly open to the ocean on one side. Water from each incoming wave pushes the raft upward in the chamber. As the water level subsides, the weight exerts a pulling force onto a gear system that in turn drives a standard electrical generator. The system is simple in design, it is highly scalable and inexpensive to construct with off-the-shelve components and building materials.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 3, 2006Publication date: January 3, 2008Inventor: Paul Swart

Patent number: 7245041Abstract: A long cylinder shaped beam is submerged in the ocean and suspended horizontally by multiple floats for converting ocean wave energy. The long length (at least the distance of the crest of two waves) and heavy weight of the beam, give the floats something stable to pull against. The weight of the beam pulling at the floats is transferred back and forth, as the ocean swells move over the beam, which activate machine components that may be installed in the beam, the floats or with rods connecting the floats to the beam. An individual float will not lift the beam except when the tide raises all the floats. The floats will pull and release the tension of the weight of the beam at randomly different times. The shape of the beam is straight. The ocean surface is continuously curving up and down and the beam will not bend to the shape of the ocean surface, but the floats will mimic the undulating or curvy shape of the ocean surface, and that motion actives the machine.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2006Date of Patent: July 17, 2007Inventor: Chris F.
