Publication number: 20010039370Abstract: The present invention provides a system for endoscopes which can supply air and water according to each application by regulating air and water flow rates independently. Although air and water may be supplied with one pump, the present invention controls air and water flow rates separately by using an air supply pump and water supply pump and by controlling a plurality of open-close valves installed, for example, on atmospheric escape pipes. Patent number: 5871441Abstract: An endoscope has a channel switching device for use in switching over a suction channel. The channel switching device consists broadly of a cylinder unit and valve unit. The valve unit can be disassembled into three component parts; a button assembly, piston assembly, and mount assembly. The button assembly has a cap, which is made of a rigid resin such as polyether ketone (PEEK) or polysulfone (PSU), as the uppermost part thereof. Since the cap is made of a rigid resin durable to autoclaving; such as, PSU or PEEK, the valve unit will not be damaged due to autoclaving. Even when the autoclaved valve unit is put to use though it is not yet cooled down, an operator will not perceive heat very much but can manipulate the endoscope as he/she intends.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1995Date of Patent: February 16, 1999Assignee: Olympus Optical Co., Ltd.Inventors: Tsutomu Ishiguro, Masaaki Nakazawa, Hisao Yabe, Hideo Ito

Patent number: 5725478Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing suction and/or irrigation in rigid endoscopes used for, e.g., bronchoscopy, esphagoscopy, and sigmoidoscopy are described. The described methods and apparatus permit a user of the endoscope to maintain visual contact with a target area being viewed though the endoscope during suction/irrigation procedures. In accordance with the present invention, the antifog port of a known rigid endoscope assembly is coupled to a suction/irrigation apparatus as opposed to being plugged or coupled to an antifog fluid source. The antifog port is thereby converted into a suction/irrigation port. By providing suction/irrigation via the antifog port, the need to remove the telescope to perform suction and/or the need to use an instrument incorporating a suction channel is eliminated. The suction/irrigation apparatus of the present invention includes an extension tube, a syringe, a valve, e.g., a two way stop cock, and a connecting tube.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1996Date of Patent: March 10, 1998Inventor: Saad A. Patent number: 5697888Abstract: An endoscope apparatus having main body and an outer unit. The main body has an insertion section. The outer unit comprises an inner tube removably mounted on the insertion section and an inner tube removably mounted on the inner tube. A first passage is provided between the inner tube and the outer circumferential surface of the insertion section, and a second passage is provided between the inner tube and the outer tube. Liquid is supplied to and drawn from the distal end of the insertion section through one of the passages. Gas is applied onto the distal end of the insertion section through the other of the passages.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 1995Date of Patent: December 16, 1997Assignee: Olympus Optical Co., Ltd.Inventors: Norio Kobayashi, Takao Yamaguchi

Patent number: 5674183Abstract: A fiberscope comprises an elongated flexible tubular member having an axially extending channel, an operator unit 2 for performing an endoscopic observation or treatment through the channel, a mounting recess 21 formed in the operator unit, an adapter 8 which can be mounted in the mounting recess, and a spray module 7 having a spray nozzle 33 which can be connected to the adapter 8. As the spray module 7 is pressed to the adapter 8, the valve mechanism of the spray module 7 is opened so that a compressed gas is ejected from the tip of the tubular member through the bore 42 of the adapter 8 and the gas passageway 23 in the operator unit 2, and, thus, deposits on the open end of its internal channel are removed with jets of a gas.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1995Date of Patent: October 7, 1997Assignee: Adachi CompanyInventor: Saburo Adachi

Patent number: 5634880Abstract: A pressure equalization device connects to a port on an endoscope and equalizes the pressure within the endoscope to an environment thereabout. An outlet check valve allows flow out of the port and blocks flow into the port. A filter may be provided for preventing known chemical agents from entering the port. If the agent is hydrogen peroxide, the filter preferably comprises a catalyst, such as copper wool, for decomposing the hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. An inlet check valve may also be provided to communicate with the endoscope port and allow flow into the port in response to a downstream pressure gradient exceeding a predetermined value.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 1995Date of Patent: June 3, 1997Assignee: Johnson & Johnson Medical, Inc.Inventors: Leslie A. Patent number: 5609563Abstract: In an endoscope, a curvature indicating element for curvature-indicating a curvable curvature section provided adjacent to a distal end of an elongated inserting section having elasticity is arranged at a location close to a thumb of a hand grasped by an operator in the operating section provided at a proximal end portion of an inserting section. An operating element for controlling operation of fluid such as outflow, inflow or the like is arranged at location opposite to the curvature indicating element in the operating section. Thus, operations of the curvature operation, outflow and inflow of the fluid and the like can be executed simultaneously under a condition where the operating section is grasped.Type: GrantFiled: September 20, 1994Date of Patent: March 11, 1997Assignee: Olympus Optical Co., Ltd.Inventors: Akira Suzuki, Hiroki Hibino, Yoshikatsu Nagayama, Motokazu Nakamura

Patent number: 5547456Abstract: A continuous vent for an endoscope which always allows flow of gas in order to prevent damaging differential pressures and always prevents entry of liquid into the endoscope. A barrier for this purpose overlays a vent port and is held in place by a ring-shaped spacer which with an overhanging shoulder leaves a limited space for flow of fluid and excludes most particulates from the barrier. The barrier maybe an assortment of hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 1995Date of Patent: August 20, 1996Assignee: Karl Storz GmbH & Co.Inventors: Karlheinz Strobl, Steven Metras

Patent number: 5456284Abstract: A medical access device is adapted to receive an instrument and comprises a housing defining an inner channel and a valve disposed in the channel to form a seal with the housing. The valve includes an outer wall and a pair of inner walls extending in distally converging relationship to define a slot. At least one compression member extends between the outer wall and an associated one of the inner walls. The compression member is compressed in response to insertion of the instrument and exerts a force on the associated inner wall when compressed to reduce leakage of the valve when the instrument is inserted. A funnel is provided at the distal end of the valve to facilitate backloading of the instrument.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1993Date of Patent: October 10, 1995Assignee: Applied Medical Resources CorporationInventors: Timothy C. Patent number: 5447148Abstract: A coupling cartridge and end cap for protecting an endoscope from contamination during use. The coupling cartridge provides fluid communication between a pair of external fluid conduits and respective channels formed in an endoscope insertion tube, and between a biopsy channel port projecting from the cartridge and an additional insertion tube channel. In one embodiment, fluid flow through the external fluid conduits is controlled by an external fluid control unit that is electrically controlled by respective switches mounted on the control handle of the endoscope. In another embodiment, fluid flow through the external fluid conduits is controlled by a valve mechanism in the coupling cartridge that is controlled by either an actuator on the cartridge or an actuator on the control handle that is mechanically coupled to the valve mechanism. The coupling cartridge may be removed from endoscope after an endoscopic procedure for disposal or rigorous cleaning.Type: GrantFiled: July 8, 1993Date of Patent: September 5, 1995Assignee: Vision Sciences, Inc.Inventors: Katsumi Oneda, Isao Fujimoto, Alan D.
