  • Patent number: 11382647
Abstract: Described herein are devices, systems and methods for treating target tissue in a patient's spine. In general, the methods include the steps of advancing a wire into the patient from a first location, through a neural foramen, and out of the patient from a second location; connecting a tissue modification device to the wire; positioning the tissue modification device through the neural foramen using the wire; modifying target tissue in the spine by moving the tissue modification device against the target tissue; and delivering an agent to modified target tissue, wherein the agent is configured to inhibit blood flow from the modified target tissue. In some embodiments, the step of modifying target tissue comprises removing target tissue located ventral to the superior articular process while avoiding non-target tissue located lateral to the superior articular process.

  • Patent number: 8992442
Abstract: The invention relates to a device for taking a liquid bone marrow sample (aspiration) and a solid bone sample (biopsy) in the same procedure, which can thus replace specialized needles for taking bone marrow and needles exclusively used for taking bone biopsies. The device for taking liquid bone marrow samples and a solid bone sample has a simple mechanism that uses two grooved clamps, it is easy to disassemble for sterilization and its handle is designed to perform the puncture easily. The needle of the device is hollow, and within it a guide is placed with two sections of different diameters. The guide makes it possible to open up the empty needle channel to allow the bone marrow liquid to flow and be extracted, and also to close the channel to be able to penetrate the tissue. The purpose of this invention is to combine the procedures of bone marrow aspiration and bone biopsy, thus reducing the patient's discomfort and the time needed for the procedure.

  • Patent number: 8574167
Abstract: A biopsy device comprises a body and a needle extending distally from the body. The needle comprises a cannula and a tissue piercing tip that is unitary with the cannula. The tissue piercing tip may be formed by compressing the distal end of the cannula to put two distal cannula portions in apposition with each other. One of the apposed distal cannula portions may be removed. The remaining distal cannula portion may be formed into a blade of the tissue piercing tip. A cutter may be moved relative to the needle to sever samples from tissue protruding through a transverse aperture formed in the cannula. A gap may be provided between the exterior of the cutter and the interior of the cannula, permitting the cutter to be distally vented while a proximal vacuum is communicated to the cutter to transport severed tissue samples proximally through the cutter.

Abstract: A biopsy device includes a cannula and an inner divider wall disposed in the cannula. The inner divider wall defines a plurality of cannula fluid openings. The outer wall of the cannula and the inner divider wall together define a cutter receiving lumen and a cannula vacuum lumen. The cannula fluid openings provide fluid communication between the cutter receiving lumen and the cannula vacuum lumen. A cutter is translatable with respect to the cannula for severing tissue drawn into the cannula. The cutter is operable to cover and/or uncover the cannula fluid openings. A proximal portion of the cutter is spaced away from the inner divider wall. A distal portion of the cutter is configured to slide adjacent to the inner divider wall.

  • Patent number: 8475392
Abstract: This invention provides a needle for a living body and a process for sampling a tissue with the needle. The needle and the process are used for harvesting a tissue sample from a living body with minimal damage. The needle is made of ceramics, and is provided with a sampling hole for aspirating a sample and with a cooling hole for supplying cooling gas. The holes penetrate through in the longitudinal direction, and have openings on a pricking-end surface of the needle. For the purpose of cutting off the tissue sample, the pricking-end surface is provided with a cutting part positioned between the openings. When the needle is pricked into a body, a tissue is aspirated through the sampling hole while cooling gas is being supplied through the cooling hole. Thus, the tissue is partly frozen or semi-frozen and cut off with the cutting part to harvest by aspiration.

Abstract: A biopsy device may include a needle, a cutter, and a handpiece. A vacuum pump may be provided in the handpiece for providing a vacuum to the needle and/or to the cutter. A motor may be provided in the handpiece to drive the vacuum pump and/or the cutter. A biopsy device may also include a valving mechanism within the handpiece for selectively communicating a vacuum and/or atmospheric air to the needle. A clutching mechanism may selectively provide communication between a motor and the cutter. Portions of a valving mechanism and a clutching mechanism may be integrally formed. A clutching and valving mechanism may be driven by a first motor; and a cutter and vacuum pump by a second motor. A biopsy device may include batteries for powering motors. A biopsy device may thus provide vacuum and power from within a handpiece, such that the biopsy device is tetherless.
