Patent number: 6923795Abstract: This invention absorbs excess menstrual flow when an intra-vaginal tampon becomes saturated during periods of heavy flow. A system of two small-size soft absorbent cloths, placed externally in the user's crotch and held in place by the female anatomy, absorbs all the excess flow. First, the multi-layer Large Cloth Assembly, inserted between and held in place by the vaginal lips at the opening of the vagina, absorbs fluid which would otherwise run down the inside of the legs when the user stands. Second, the folded Small Cloth placed on the skin between the opening of the vagina and the anus, secured in place by the buttocks closing around it, absorbs fluid which would otherwise leak through the crack between the buttocks, particulary when the body is horizontal. Disposal of both cloths is by a toilet flush. The invention has been effective in clinical trials, is medically safe, simple and hidden from view, comfortable, low cost, and adapted to any anatomy.Type: GrantFiled: November 8, 2002Date of Patent: August 2, 2005Inventors: April Lu Cantley, Harold Beal Cantley

Patent number: 6837882Abstract: A tampon showing improved leakage protection through improved expansion characteristics is disclosed. The tampons disclosed demonstrate these improved expansion characteristics particularly in the width dimension without introducing new drawbacks. Preferred tampons are described which are compressed to an initial size comparable to current tampons, but which expand to a width exceeding that achieved by current tampons. Such increased expansion is preferably accomplished without an increase in the total absorbency of the tampon. Tampons of various absorbencies are disclosed having increased total expansion in the width direction compared to current tampons. Additionally, tampons of various absorbencies which expand to a greater degree in the width direction under pressure are also disclosed. Tampons of various absorbencies which expand at a rate exceeding that achieved previously are also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2003Date of Patent: January 4, 2005Assignee: The Procter & Gamble CompanyInventors: Raymond Kusi Agyapong, Roberto Hollander, David Joseph Caracci, Susan Rachelle Hill, Bruce Leslie Hayes, Fiona Marie Taylor, James Arthur Keighley, Kevin Charles Strong

Patent number: 6796973Abstract: A vaginal discharge collection device is formed of an elastomeric rim and a flexible film reservoir. The rim may have a generally rectangular cross section and forms a collection space for collecting vaginal discharge. The reservoir may be collapsible so as to be substantially enclosed within the rim when the device is being used. Advantageously, the rim and the reservoir are arranged such that compressing diametrically opposed portions of the rim toward each other causes a leading portion of the rim to dip downwardly to facilitate insertion of the device. The device is ergonomically constructed so as to be convenient to use, comfortable to wear internally, and reliable. A system for reliably, comfortably and conveniently introducing agents, including drugs and other substances, into the vaginal canal is also disclosed.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1994Date of Patent: September 28, 2004Assignee: Instead, Inc.Inventors: Audrey Contente, Bruce F. Patent number: 6692825Abstract: A nonwoven web and method of preparing a novel nonwoven web of synthetic fiber are disclosed. An aqueous solution amide crosslinked synthetic precursor polymer is extruded under defined conditions through a plurality of die orifices to form a plurality of threadlines. The threadlines are attenuated with a defined primary gaseous source to form fiber under conditions of controlled macro scale turbulence and under conditions sufficient to permit the viscosity of each threadline, as it leaves a die orifice and for a distance of no more than about 8 cm, to increase incrementally with increasing distance from the die, while substantially maintaining uniformity of viscosity in the radial direction, at a rate sufficient to provide fiber having the desired attenuation and mean fiber diameter without significant fiber breakage. The attenuated threadlines are dried with a defined secondary gaseous source. The resulting fibers are deposited randomly on a moving foraminous surface to form a substantially uniform web.Type: GrantFiled: March 6, 2002Date of Patent: February 17, 2004Assignee: Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc.Inventors: Jian Qin, Yong Li, Wendy Lynn Van Dyke, Anthony John Wisneski, Palani Raj Ramaswami Wallajapet, Hannong Rhim

Patent number: 4911698Abstract: An intra-labia urinary collection device for obtaining a "clean-catch" urine specimen. The device is a hollow, oval body of rigid plastic having an upper wall with a front recess and oval opening positionable for receiving uncontaminated urine from the urethral opening. The upper wall further includes opposing side and rear recesses which meet at a raised central plateau to form a closed projection which fits in the vaginal opening. The rear recess engages the vestibular tissue rearwardly of the vaginal opening to seal the device in position and prevent contamination of the urine specimen by bacteria, cells or fluids from the vagina or anus. An enlarged hollow chamber is formed by vertical sidewalls at the widest section of the body which allows the device to handle a high rate of urine flow without leakage.Type: GrantFiled: May 10, 1988Date of Patent: March 27, 1990Assignee: Dale Medical Products, Inc.Inventor: Herbert H.
