  • Patent number: 7363072
Abstract: To accomplish isolation and removal of a substance from a vasculature, a catheter is employed to occlude a vessel of the vasculature. The substance is thus isolated in the vasculature and can be removed. In this way, the substance is removed before entering other parts of the circulatory system. This method is applicable to removal of contrast from the coronary sinus shortly after injection of the coronary arteries with the contrast. The method substantially minimizes or avoids renal dysfunction caused by angiographic procedures in which contrast must be injected. Such angiographic procedures are often performed during intervention procedures. This method substantially prevents circulation of the contrast to the kidneys where it could otherwise cause renal dysfunction or failure. The apparatus for implementation of the method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 7357142
Abstract: An apparatus for continuously aspirating a fluid from a fluid source. A vacuum source is operatively connected to a first container forming a first chamber and a second container forming a second chamber. A fluid collection tube provides communication between the fluid source and each of the first chamber and the second chamber. A first level sensor is positioned within the first chamber and a second level sensor is positioned within the second chamber. Upon receiving a signal generated by one of the first level sensor and the second level sensor, a relay responsively exposes a vacuum within one of the first chamber and the second chamber to continuously aspirate at least a portion of the fluid from the fluid source. A shut-off valve is preferably positioned within each of the first chamber and the second chamber to prevent communication between the vacuum source and the corresponding chamber with a fluid level within the chamber at a fluid level setpoint.

Abstract: A surge-flow regulator (36) for use with an ophthalmic surgical instrument (12) having an infusion line (20) adapted to irrigate a surgical site with fluid and an aspiration line (24) adapted to carry the fluid and particles of lenticular debris away from the surgical site. The surge-flow regulator (36) includes a flow limiting device (40) that is placed in fluid communication with the aspiration line (24) to control surge-flow of the aspirated fluid and lenticular debris through the aspiration line (24). Abstract: A transdermal transport device includes a reservoir for holding a formulation of an active principle, and one or more needles. Each needle has a bore through which the formulation is transported between the reservoir and a biological body, and has an end portion that is substantially aligned in a plane parallel to a surface of the biological body when the device is placed on the surface. The device also includes a vacuum generator which creates a suction to draw a portion of the surface beyond the plane of the end portions to enable the end portions to penetrate the portion of the surface as the needles are translated along an axis that is substantially parallel to the plane.

  • Patent number: 7048727
Abstract: A decompressing and feeding device for safely feeding in the gastrointestinal tract of a recovering patient continuously aspirates and feeds at a rate commensurate with the ability of the intestines to absorb fluids including nutrient. Air is also aspirated in the process so that neither air nor excess fluids cause distension in the gastrointestinal tract. Digestive juices and nutrients that are aspirated are continuously refed together with unused feeding material into the gastrointestinal tract at a location that more efficiently moves and digests the food. The device may include two aspirate reservoirs to which and from which aspirate is alternatingly and continuously transferred. To provide the continuous and alternating flow, a solenoid valve and timer switch device is provided. Alternatively, a device is provided with a single aspirate reservoir to which and from which aspirate is continuously transferred.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a proximal catheter assembly that is configured to facilitate natural or suction-assisted aspiration through a catheter lumen. The proximal catheter assembly comprises a relief valve configured to regulate the level of suction-assisted aspiration provided through the working lumen of the catheter. When the level of suction-assisted aspiration exceeds a predetermined threshold, the relief valve opens to allow fluid to be drawn from tubing coupled to the proximal catheter assembly, thereby mitigating the relatively high levels of aspiration imposed upon the working lumen and the patient's vessel.

  • Patent number: 7025755
Abstract: A medical fluid suctioning device for selectively applying varied levels of suction pressure at a device-tissue interface includes a direct “trumpet”-type control mechanism in conjunction with a “venturi”-type control. A valve manifold is adapted to couple a vent pathway and a suction pathway simultaneously to the vacuum conduit adapted for connection to a vacuum source. The amount of resistance to flow due to vacuum pressure is adjusted simultaneously in both the vent pathway and the suction pathway in order to achieve controlled, selected levels of suction. Similarly shaped valve apertures are provided in inverse and reciprocal orientation along an axis of motion of a valve manifold. The apertures translate across ports to the suction and venting pathways simultaneously to vary applied suction to those pathways inversely.

  • Patent number: 7018354
Abstract: Liposuction devices and methods and surrounding aspiration systems and methods that reduce the chances of burning and necrosis. The devices include an evacuation tube surrounding an ultrasonic probe, including the distal end thereof to define a liquefaction and/or rupture chamber. The evacuation tube has one or more openings in the distal end through which tissue such as fatty tissue may enter for rupture/liquefaction therein. Containing the ultrasonic probe within the evacuation tube avoids any possible contact with surrounding tissue other than tissue that gets drawn into the liquefaction and/or rupture chamber. The size of the liquefaction and/or rupture chamber may be variable by adjustment of the axial position of the evacuation tube relative to the ultrasonic probe, or by selection of evacuation tubes of the desired length. Various embodiments are disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6997918
Abstract: The present invention provides improved methods, systems, devices and kits for performing lung volume reduction in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or other conditions where isolation of a lung segment or reduction of lung volume is desired. The methods are minimally invasive with instruments being introduced through the mouth (endotracheally) and rely on isolating the target lung tissue segment from other regions of the lung. Isolation is achieved by deploying an obstructive device in a lung passageway leading to the target lung tissue segment. Once the obstructive device is anchored in place, the segment can be aspirated through the device. This may be achieved by a number of methods, including coupling an aspiration catheter to an inlet port on the obstruction device and aspirating through the port.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a proximal catheter assembly that is configured to facilitate aspiration through a catheter lumen. The proximal catheter assembly enables natural aspiration to be achieved within the catheter lumen, for example, using an arterial-venous shunt, and further enables suction-assisted aspiration or infusion to be applied through the catheter lumen. This allows a physician to provide a substantially continuous level of retrograde flow within a vessel during a medical procedure without damaging the vessel wall, while providing the option of suction-assisted aspiration, when necessary, to further influence the level of aspiration within the vessel.
