Patent number: 6761718Abstract: The present invention provides a bipolar coagulator which can be passed through the internal lumen of a ventricular catheter previously implanted into a cranial ventricle of a living subject and engaged in-situ. The bipolar coagulator will provide bipolar electrical arc currents for coagulation cauterization of adherent brain tissues, such as the choroid plexus, which occludes fluid flow into the intake drainage holes in the implanted ventricular catheter and often becomes adherent to the catheter in-situ. The cautery current provided by the bipolar coagulator is direction oriented and spatially controlled; thereby providing a better distribution of electrical current and heat within the surrounding cranial tissues; and thereby avoiding major complications of damage to intracranial structures such as blood vessels as well as avoiding the severe subarachnoid hemorrhages which are typical using other kinds of coagulation instruments.Type: GrantFiled: September 6, 2001Date of Patent: July 13, 2004Assignee: Children's Medical Center Corp.Inventor: Joseph R. Patent number: 6758846Abstract: In an electrosurgical system which is operable within the frequency range of from 100kHz to 50MHz and which has a handheld instrument with an elongate instrument shaft, the distal end of the shaft carries a bipolar electrode assembly for use in a conductive fluid field. The electrode assembly has an active electrode and, set back from the active electrode, a return electrode coated with an insulative dielectric layer. The insulative layer may be made of a plastics or a ceramic material and acts as the dielectric of a capacitor when the electrode assembly is immersed in the conductive fluid. One of the effects of the insulative layer is to provide a more uniformly distributed electric field over the return electrode than is obtained with an exposed return electrode, yielding improved tissue desiccation and vaporisation characteristics. The active electrode may have a similar dielectric covering.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2001Date of Patent: July 6, 2004Assignee: Gyrus Medical LimitedInventors: Colin C. O. Goble, Nigel M Goble

Publication number: 20040049185Abstract: Electrosurgical forceps are described that have jaws capable of being closed relative to one another, the jaws each supporting electrode structures especially shaped to enhance the ability of the instrument to desiccate/seal or cut tissue structures clamped between the opposed jaws. One of the opposed jaws has a generally arcuate cross-section with a raised central zone and the other electrode has a recess adapted to accommodate the raised central zone of the cooperating electrode. By appropriating the shaping the mating electrode surfaces, tissue structures placed between the jaws are stretched laterally as clamping occurs. The stretching action prevents bunching of the tissue and results in improved desiccation, sealing and cutting. A fine, uninsulated conductor disposed on the one jaw, but insulated from the electrode surface on that jaw, serves as a cutting electrode.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 8, 2003Publication date: March 11, 2004Applicant: Gyrus Medical, Inc.Inventors: Scott T. Patent number: 6638275Abstract: A transurethral apparatus for radio frequency ablation treatment of the prostate having prostatic tissue of a human male having urethra which extends through the prostate comprising an elongate probe sized so that it is adapted to be introduced into the urethra and having a passageway extending therethrough. The elongate probe has proximal and distal extremities. Proximal and distal pairs of needle electrodes are provided which are carried by the distal extremity of the probe. A control mounted on the proximal extremity of the probe and extends through the passageway and is coupled to the proximal and distal pairs of needle electrodes for movement of the needle electrodes into and out of the prostate. A RF generator is provided for supplying RF energy to the needle electrodes for solely creating bipolar ablation with respect to the proximal and distal pairs of needle electrodes.Type: GrantFiled: October 5, 2000Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: Medironic, Inc.Inventors: Thomas H. Publication number: 20030199869Abstract: A bipolar electrosurgical instrument for clamping, grasping, manipulating, and sealing tissue includes first and second shafts each having a jaw member extending from a distal end thereof and a handle disposed at a proximal end thereof. The handle being operable to effect movement of the jaw members relative to one another from a first position wherein the jaw members are disposed in spaced relation relative to one another to a second position wherein the jaw members cooperate to grasp tissue therebetween. The bipolar instrument is connectable to a source of electrical energy having a first electrical potential connected to one of the jaw members and a second electrical potential connected to the other of the jaw members such that the jaw members are capable of selectively conducting energy through tissue held therebetween to effect a seal. Both the first and second electrical potentials are transmitted to the jaw members through the first shaft.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 30, 2002Publication date: October 23, 2003Inventors: Kristin D.
