Thermal Material Receptacle Patents (Class 607/114)
  • Patent number: 8021406
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a thermoregulatory device. The device has a first layer, a second layer, an enclosure, an inlet and a liquid absorbing material. The first layer has a first interior surface, and a first exterior surface. The second layer has a second interior surface and a second exterior surface. The enclosure is formed by sealing and/or attaching the first interior surface to the second interior surface. The inlet directs a liquid into the enclosure. The liquid absorbing material is positioned (a) at and/or near an aperture that allows a liquid to contact the liquid absorbing material; or (b) on the first exterior surface that is of a material that allows the liquid to contact the liquid absorbing material. In addition, the application is directed a method of using the thermoregulatory device to transfer the liquid's thermal energy from the enclosure to a patient's skin.

  • Patent number: 8016868
Abstract: A heat patch and method for providing therapy to a body. The heat patch includes a reflective layer and a heat source that is attached to the reflective layer. The reflective layer reflects infrared energy emitted by the body back into the body while the heat source applies heat to the body. The combination of supplying heat and reflecting infrared energy provides effective therapy to people with relatively deep tissue injuries. In another aspect, the heat patch includes an enclosure made from a gas-permeable layer and a reflective layer attached to the gas-permeable layer. A heating composition is sealed inside the enclosure to generate heat when a gas (e.g., air) is received through the gas-permeable layer. The heat generated by the heating composition is easily controlled such that heat patch can be maintained at a temperature well above ambient temperature.

Abstract: The invention provides an improved hot/cold therapy pad consisting of a thermally conductive fluid and a discrete matrix insert contained within an outer envelope. The matrix insert has significant void space (over 50%) and is chemically inert relative to the other components within the envelope. The matrix has low bulk density and may be formed by bonding fibers together to form a mat. This matrix serves to reduce the flow of the thermally conductive fluid and provide for more effective and consistent heat (cold) transfer from the pad to the skin. The thermally conductive fluid has a viscosity greater than water and is stable over the typical range of hot/cold therapy applications. The invention eliminates saddle-bagging in hot and cold therapy applications.

The thermal insert includes a substrate containing an exothermic coating that is capable of generating heat in the presence of oxygen and moisture. One particular benefit of the thermal insert of the present invention is that it is disposable. Thus, when the thermal insert exhausts its heat-producing capacity, a new insert may simply be utilized. This allows for the continued use of the extensible material, resulting in substantial cost savings to the consumer.

Abstract: A moisturizing and therapeutic method and article of manufacture by utilizing non-electrical, heat generating objects to provide moisture and temporary pain relief to a user's hand, wherein the non-electrical, heat generating object is held closely against the inside of a user's palm to cause the temperature of the article of manufacture to gradually increase. The article of manufacture has a first glove half formed of natural materials and shaped to cover the back side of a user's hand. A second glove half is formed of the same natural materials to create an inner layer between the first glove half and the third glove layer (sheath). The third glove layer (sheath) is shaped to cover the under side (palm area only) of a user's hand and is joined with the first and second glove halves to form an opening at the wrist for receiving an enveloping a human hand.

Abstract: An arrangement for, and a method of, cooling a body site, especially for treating menopause-associated vasomotor symptoms, places one or more cold packs in a thermally insulated housing in which a cold source is present, and cools each cold pack by placement of the housing, either opened or closed, in a freezer or like apparatus. The cold packs retain their cold temperature prior to onset of a condition requiring cold therapy relief by the presence of the cold source and the thermally insulating properties of the housing. Each cold pack is removable from the housing after onset of the condition, is externally applied to a user experiencing the condition requiring cold therapy relief, and is re-usable.

Abstract: A pressure adjustable structure for ice compress includes an ice-packing unit, an air-containing unit, and a pressure-adjusting unit being installed in an ice-compress body. The pressure-adjusting unit controls the gas pressure in the air-containing unit. By adding the air-containing unit and the pressure-adjusting unit to the conventional ice-packing unit, the pressure adjustable structure for ice compress acquires a function of arbitrarily adjusting the adhesive force of the ice-packing unit to a body portion it is attached to.

Abstract: Apparatus for altering the body temperature of a patient comprises an enclosure defining an interior space for receiving at least a portion of a patient's body therein. The enclosure has at least one gusset that is resiliently deformable for accommodating patients of various sizes. A supply conduit fluidly connects an inlet of the enclosure to a reservoir, and a return conduit fluidly connects an outlet of the enclosure to the reservoir. A first coupler joins the supply conduit and the return conduit to the reservoir and a second coupler joins the supply conduit and the return conduit to the enclosure. The reservoir generally comprises a bag and at least a portion of the supply conduit is integral with the bag.

Abstract: A hypothermia treatment sack comprising a top sheet and a bottom sheet releasably connecting along their perimeters to form a patient receiving cavity between the top and bottom sheets while allowing for patient access from any location around the perimeter. The top and bottom sheets include a weatherproof exterior side for repelling wind and water, and a heat reflective interior side for preventing heat from escaping. A plurality of self-activating heating pads are carried in the top sheet for producing heat when exposed to air. The heating pads have a first side exposed on the weatherproof exterior side of the top sheet to provide for a generally unrestricted airflow to the heating pads, and a second side exposed on the heat reflective interior side of the top sheet for radiating heat directly into the patient receiving cavity.

  • Patent number: 7727267
Abstract: A refrigerant-containing bladder or container is positioned underneath the body. Heat absorbed from the body vaporizes the refrigerant, which expands to cooler remote regions of the bladder. Heat is then withdrawn from the edges of the container by thermally conductive pathways that distribute heat from this container to a cooler area that is not underneath the body. The cooled refrigerant condenses, and is returned to the regions of the device that are under or adjacent to the central and warmest parts of the body. The heavier and warmer portions of the body force the bladder to the lowest point. Alternatively, heat is transferred from the body via a specific highly thermally conductive layer or layers of material(s) that is (are) soft, pliable, and comfortable to sit or lie on. This layer joins conductive materials that are configured to transport heat and diffuse it to the cooler environment.

Abstract: A long-acting cold pack structure for cold compress therapy on human body includes a cold maintaining layer, a fluid layer and an air bag layer which are stacked in sequence. The cold maintaining layer is filled with gel-like cold maintaining material. The fluid layer is adapted for circulating low temperature fluid. The air bag layer is filled with air as desired. With the circulation of the low temperature fluid in the fluid layer, the present invention permits the cold maintaining material in the cold maintaining layer to extend the time at a low temperature. The air bag layer is filled with air to compress the cold maintaining layer for depth cold compress therapy. The cold pack of the present invention provides better cold compress effect than the prior art.
