Abstract: A precious stone setting, especially for diamonds, is achieved without adversely affecting the value of the stones, and in an essentially invisible way, by forming slight notches at the angles of the culet in such a way that the depth of the notches is small and the distance separating the bottom of two opposite notches is very much greater than the width of the table of the stone. A metal matrix is used to hold the stone, the metal penetrating into the notches.
Abstract: A gem setting includes a holding body and a gem received therein in a predetermined position, an inner wall face forming a part of the holding body and defining a bore hole therein; a first depression in the inner wall face; and a second depression in a peripheral face of the gem. The peripheral face is received in the bore hole and the first and second depressions are in alignment with one another in the predetermined position of the gem. An elastic connecting member is nested simultaneously in both the first and second depressions for coupling the gem to the holding body. The elastic connecting member and the depth of one of the depressions is dimensioned with respect to one another such that the elastic connecting member is expandable into the depression during introduction of the gem into the bore hole until the first and second depressions arrive in mutual alignment with one another.
Abstract: A removable holding ring on an item of jewelry holds a replaceable insert which has a groove included in its top adapted for slidably retaining a replaceable ornament with a portion exposed for public view. Resilient support between the insert and the item permits full seating of the holding ring on the item. Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a setting for an article such as a gemstone, and the setting formed, use a sheet metal support member defining channel-like ends that bear against ends of the article. The method includes folding a length of sheet material along an axis to form a support member defining a channel, compressing a central part of the channel while leaving the ends open thereby forming holding channels connected by to form a central web, and affixing a prong member to the web portion of the channel by soldering. The web portion of the channel is notched for receiving the prong member and bent transverse to its fold to bring the channel-shaped opposite ends of the support member into opposition. Support members can be produced to cover a range of gem sizes by trimming and notching the support member of one range size as required to fit a certain gem size in the range. The notching step is aligned such that the support member when bent defines a rectilinear notch for the prong member.
Abstract: A linkable gem setting includes a base element, a plurality of upstanding fingers on the base element, and an apertured tab which extends outwardly from the base element for interlinking the setting with another setting of the similar configuration. In one embodiment of the gem setting, the apertured tab of a first setting is receivable on one of the fingers of a second setting of similar configuration for linking the two settings together so that when a gem is assembled in the fingers of the second setting, the gem retains the two settings in linked relation. In another embodiment of the setting, a connector arm is provided on the base element so that the apertured tab of a first setting is receivable in interlinked engagement with the connector arm of a second setting to secure the two settings together.

Abstract: A process for cutting a diamond to realize an invisible mounting by using cuts situated below the girdle in which may be engaged the mounting. According to the invention the notches (7) have the shape of a dihedron (4) of which the two surfaces (5-6) are situated on both sides of the plane of the natural table along which is oriented the polished table (1), the two surfaces (5-6) of each dihedron being themselves polished by using a sawing machine in which the diamond carrier is movably mounted along a direction parallel to the plane of the disk and driven in an alternating motion along this direction, the surface of the disk being coated with a mixture of bort and gum arabic diluted with water, the polishing speed of the surface of the disk with respect to the diamond being comprised between 2500 and 3200 m/min., with about 10 passages per minute of the diamond in contact with the surface of the disk.
Abstract: A lightweight, rigid, metal product and a process for preparing such a product are disclosed in which a wire metal mesh is formed into a desired three-dimensional shape and is then electroplated to plate a metal thereon to fill the voids of mesh and provide the rigid product in such desired shape. Abstract: A method and setting for mounting ornamental beads and gems which avoids the use of claws. The setting is comprised of a flat planar sheet metal support with an aperture therein and a rectilinear strip that extends diametrically across the aperture. The strip has two ends, both of which are initially in one piece with the support. In keeping with the method of this invention, one of said ends of the strip is sheared from the support adjacent a side of the aperture. The strip is then deformable about its non-sheared end from a position coplanar with the aperture thereby enabling the threading of an ornamental bead or gem with a straight-through opening therein onto said strip. Subsequent to threading of the ornament on the strip, the strip is positioned in the plane of the aperture and is held in this position by frictional wedging of the sheared end of the strip against the portion of the support from which that end has been sheared.
Abstract: The present invention relates to an industrial process for manufacturing jewelry such as rings preferably in precious metal set with stones, consisting in the following operations:drilling into the said base, of a cylindrical hole of suitable dimensions, provision on the periphery of said hole and at a certain distance of the surface on which the stones will appear, of a pre-setting groove whose dimensions are adapted to those of the stone, andfitting the stone in the pre-setting groove by clipping.
