Utilizing Parting Or Lubricating Layer Patents (Class 65/24)
  • Patent number: 4339257
Abstract: A method of producing a curved glass sheet having a colored coating layer formed in a selected region, such as a marginal region in the case of a window glass for the rear window of an automobile, by applying a coloring agent comprising inorganic pigment and glass frit of a low melting temperature onto a flat glass sheet surface, heating the glass sheet and press-bending the heat-softened glass sheet while the applied coloring agent is in fused state. As a novel feature, the coloring agent comprises alumina powder which adheres to the surfaces of the glass frit particles until fusion of the glass frit on the glass sheet surface. The presence of alumina powder prevents a shaping tool pressed against the glass sheet from adhering to the fused layer of the coloring agent.

  • Patent number: 4333756
Abstract: Improvements in a method for producing a pressed glass article are disclosed. The method includes causing a gas to flow from a manifold around the exterior of a plunger used for pressing a gob of softened glass in a mold; the improvements include the use of a gas which is a cold mixture of at least one alkane and at least one unsaturated hydrocarbon, control of the proportion of alkane to unsaturated hydrocarbon so that a substantially invisible lubricious coating is deposited on the plunger, causing the gas to flow at a sufficiently high rate to cause excessive cooling, and controlling the temperature of the plunger by periodically interrupting the gas flow. The method of the invention provides cooling and lubrication of glass pressing apparatus with a single gas mixture, and helps to alleviate such problems as high expense, inadequate cooling and/or lubrication, pollution and excessive carbonaceous residue which can result from conventional methods.

  • Patent number: 4324601
Abstract: A method for preparing a glass container, and for sealing a glass mouth of a container and the seal are described. The sealing surface, or finish, of the container is subjected to a hot end treatment after forming and before annealing to enhance adhesion between the container finish and a thermoplastic membrane seal. The container is next annealed and after annealing is subjected to a cold end treatment in which the exterior container surface is coated with a material which enhances the lubricity and increases the abrasion and scratch resistance of the container. The container finish only is then subjected to a brief heat treatment sufficient to remove any lubricity enhancing material from the finish. A membrane comprising a thermoplastic film is pressed onto the container finish and heated causing glass-plastic adhesion and forming a closure.

  • Patent number: 4264350
Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for treating molten glass contacting surfaces including forming molds, gob chutes, neck rings, and the like, with an organic solution of a metal organic phosphate having a finely-divided lubricious filler dispersed therein, the dispersion being used to coat such glass contacting surfaces and the coating being heated to form a degradation product having improved glass releasing and wear-resistant properties. The coating forms a solid film lubricant especially adapted for use in manufacturing glass articles providing quick release of the molded glass articles, a protective lubricant layer for the glass contacting surfaces, and eliminating the need for frequent swabbing of such surfaces, especially mold surfaces with oily compositions.

  • Patent number: 4119424
Abstract: A method and apparatus for shaping glass sheets by gravity sagging using a pair of oblique slides to support an opposite pair of edges of a flat glass sheet, which is supported on said slides in shaping relation over an outline shaping mold and heated until it sags to conform to the upward facing shaping surface of the mold disposed between and below said slides. The gist of the present invention is to selectively apply cooling fluid against the glass sheet adjacent one of the opposite glass sheet side edges whenever the opposite side edge begins to slide and sag an observable amount more than the adjacent side edge. The selective application is discontinued when both of the glass sheet edges are in approximate horizontal alignment with one another. If necessary, this process is repeated throughout the gravity sagging operation, thereby ensuring that the glass sheet comes to rest on the peripheral shaping surface of the outline mold in proper alignment therewith.

  • Patent number: 4082526
Abstract: A powder is applied to a glass ribbon as the ribbon is displaced between an annealing lehr and a cutting station. The powder on the ribbon facilitates removal of glass chips (1) generated during the cutting of the ribbon into sheets and (2) projected onto the top surface of the glass ribbon. The powder is applied by vaporizing same in a chamber and condensing the vaporized powder on or allowing the powder to condense in the chamber and fall on the top surface of the ribbon as it is displaced past the chamber.
