    Abstract: A combination lock having a lock housing with a spring bolt. A manually operable combination dial is provided outside the housing to operate a standard combination mechanism and a bolt retracting cam. A bolt retracting element is secured to the bolt and engageable by the bolt retracting cam when the combination mechanism is operated to a predetermined condition. By turning the dial the retracting cam is operated and the bolt is retracted. A disengagement mechanism disengages the bolt retracting element from the retracting cam, after the dial is released and the bolt is then displaced to its locked position.

    Abstract: A combination lock for bank vaults, safes and the like, including a pack of peripherally gated tumbler wheels loosely journaled for rotation on a tumbler post about a common axis in the lock case, a peripherally gated rotatable driving cam positioned by a manually operable dial and knob member to angularly adjust the tumbler wheels through a lost motion coupling to an opening combination for the lock, and a fence lever having a pivot connection at one end to a slidable bolt for movement arcuately between raised and lowered positions relative to the peripheries of the driving cam and tumblers. The fence lever has an upwardly arching body and a fence portion defining a foot formation projecting from the arched portion having a downwardly facing recess spanning most of its lower end portion and an elongated unitary contact bar member pivotally seated therein to normally bear on the driving cam periphery.

    Abstract: A combination lock includes an over-center mechanism for moving the fence of the lock between two alternative positions with a snap action, the over-center mechanism comprising a lever arm secured to the fence and turning about a pivot on the bolt assembly and a stressed spring connected at one end to the lever arm and at the other end to a member capable of movement between two positions in relation to the bolt assembly. In one of the two positions the line of action of the spring passes to one side of the pivot of the lever arm and in the other position it passes to the other side of the pivot, so that when the member moves from one position to the other the lever arm is biased to move the fence from one alternative position to the other.

    Abstract: A keyless combination lock is protected against manipulation by the inclusion of a rotary member turned by rotation of the dial of the lock and which, after excessive rotation from a datum position, such as is likely to occur under conditions of manipulation, serves to move a protective member into an operative position such that operation of the lock is impossible, e.g. by isolating the probe of the lock from the combination wheels. The rotary member is also connected to mechanism for returning it to its datum position after a time delay and arrival at the datum position serves to return the protective member back to an inoperative position if it has previously been moved to its operative position. The return mechanism may start to operate as soon as the rotary member is turned from its datum position and may include a spring which is progressively stressed as the rotary member is turned.

A pivoted fence lever is normally releasably latched in a raised inactive position, and a releasing spring is activated by a control cam to impact against a shoulder formation on the fence lever for releasing the latter from such latched condition and impelling it to coupled relation with the control cam when the tumbler wheels occupy a predetermined alignment whereby the lock cam can be unlocked by operation of the control cam.

    Abstract: A combination lock of the type having peripherally gated tumbler wheels rotating about a common axis and adjusted by a rotatable dial and driving cam assembled on a spindle and supported for axial as well as rotary movement, the lock has an over-center spring coupled to a fence lever which normally holds the fence lever at a raised inactive position and has a fence lever accelerator which includes an anvil surface portion and a hammer portion supported by a spring formation which is stressed to an energy storage position responsive to rotation of the driving cam so that the hammer portion can be released from that position to impact against the anvil surface and impel the fence lever toward the driving cam to cause the fence lever to shift to a lowered coupled condition with the driving cam if the tumbler wheels are properly aligned and to cause it to be spring returned to the raised inactive position if they are not properly aligned.
