  • Patent number: 6173592
Abstract: A lock for a suitcase includes a base on the base portion of the suitcase and an engaging part on the cover of the suitcase. The base has an aperture for retaining a hook on the engaging part. The base has two setting disks each have a notch and a control frame in the base has two protrusions disengagably received in the two notches. The control frame is connected to a retaining member which has a pin inserted into the aperture so that when the protrusions are received in the notches of the setting disks, the control frame and the retaining member are shifted to let the pin be removed from the aperture. A block is inserted into the aperture by rotating a setting member and the block has a thumb which stops a lug on the control frame when the protrusions are received in the notches so that two number disks mounted to the setting disks can be freely rotated to set another locking code.

  • Patent number: 5881584
Abstract: For a mobile door or container, a lock that will hold firm against shock. The lock can be opened using a keypad to turn on a motor that disengages it, or manually, using a key. To disengage the lock, a shockproofer element of the lock includes components that must first be pivoted about one axis and components that must then be pivoted about a second, different axis, usually nearly perpendicular to the first axis. The lock resists opening under shock loading because the two pivoting rotations about different axes must be made to occur in a particular sequence, and cannot occur simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 5507161
Abstract: The invention is a device for locking the closure mechanism on an item of luggage. The device includes a movable rod which drives a movable clasp bolt on one part of the luggage. The clasp bolt interacts with an opening in another part of the luggage, which opening serves as the strike for the clasp bolt. A movable latch may be interposed in the path of the rod, so that in an active position the latch blocks the movement of the rod, thus locking the case, but when the latch is in a retracted position the rod is released. The latch is moved by an electric motor connected to the latch by a gear reduction unit which amplifies the output torque of the motor. The latch may remain in its blocking position when motor torque is not supplied. A control signal generator actuates the motor in response to the reception of an access code input by the user.

Abstract: A hardware assembly, which is readily adaptable to luggage cases of widely varying constructions, dimensions and configurations, includes a housing which may be positioned within cut-outs in adjacent edges of the side walls of the luggage case, and be mounted on the exterior of one side wall. The housing contains slideable latches for engaging associated hasps mounted on the exterior of the other side wall, and a flexible member connecting the latches to a slideable actuator mounted on the housing for opening the case. The coupling between the latches and the flexible member allows the latches to move to unlatching position independently of the actuator to facilitate closing and latching of the case when the parts are brought together. The actuator is U-shaped and supported for transverse movement on the housing by a rocker located within the housing.

Abstract: A hardware assembly for luggage and the like includes a latch pivotally supported on a luggage case and held in a closed position by engagement between catch elements on the latch and cooperating catch elements on a control member supported for movement along the case, the control member being biased in a direction to engage the catch elements. A pivoted manual actuator associated with the latch engages the control member and is capable of moving the control member in a direction to disengage the catch elements to allow the latch to be opened, when the manual actuator is operated. The catch elements serve as a safety catch to prevent the latch from being opened until the catch elements are disengaged. The hardware assembly may further include a latching slide member coupled to the latch by a link member for movement with the latch, and for engaging a cooperable latch element on a second part of the case when the latch is in the closed position.
