The control unit is used for controlling image parameters of the virtual image and is capable of adjusting the imaging distance of the virtual image but keeping at least one of the image parameters remaining the same before and after the change of the imaging distance.

In embodiments, the handheld device can perform non-GPS functions using its built-in keypad and display, while simultaneously displaying GPS information on the docking station display and broadcasting GPS announcements through the audio outputs of the docking station. At least one keypad key can be dedicated to a special GPS-relevant function, and can include a visible indication of its function.

In this manner, the user interface enclosure can rotate on the ball, but the orientation of the sensors relative to the vehicle will remain the same.
