  • Patent number: 8229878
Abstract: A computer implemented method used to interpret text, including from a set of formal glossaries which may refer one to the other and are intended to define precisely the terminology of a field of endeavor. Such glossaries are known as intelligent, in the sense that they allow machines to make deductions, without the need for human intervention. However, they may also accept human intervention. Once a word is defined in an intelligent glossary, all the logical consequences of the use of that word in a formal and well-formed sentence are computable. The process includes a question and answer mechanism, which applies the definitions contained in the intelligent glossaries to a given formal sentence. The methods may be applied in the development of knowledge management methods and tools that are based on semantics; for example: modeling of essential knowledge in the field based on the relevant semantics.

  • Patent number: 8229872
Abstract: The present invention relates generally to methods of modeling and handling of nonlinearities for application of automatic control to systems with high inter-process variance and nonlinearities. The variance and nonlinearities make these systems difficult to control. Variance is accounted for by replacing the mathematical model of the system with a more representative model from a modelset that may or may not be chosen based on characteristics of the system under test, and then adapting using recursive estimation techniques. Nonlinearities defined by threshold to response and maximal responses are incorporated into linear models relating accumulated inputs to response. Example implementations in relation to automated drug delivery for neuromuscular blocking drugs through warning, advisory and closed-loop control systems are discussed.

  • Patent number: 8214320
Abstract: The litigation cost management system (FIG. 1) provides modules for outlining the process of litigation (12), establishing pricing variables to each step of the litigation (14), all at the outset of the case. A case budget (16) is then generated and the case is managed by outside counsel based upon the agreed upon budget and process. When exceptions occur during the course of litigation, outside counsel electronically submits requests for new work to corporate counsel, which in turn can be approved or denied. Point and click billing allows immediate simplistic invoicing which requires no review by corporate counsel as the work performed has already been approved. Statistical reporting provides corporate counsel with real time analysis of all the cases that are in the system.

  • Patent number: 8156063
Abstract: An assessment of a request for change is made by first receiving the request for change. The request for change is compared with a plurality of stored requests for change that are stored in a change database. Then, a computation is made, using learned similarity functions, of a similarity value for each of the stored requests for change with respect to the received request for change. Feedback is received with respect to the similarity values. A training set of data is updated based on the received feedback. The updated training set of data is applied to a learning process, to obtain learned similarity functions. The similarity calculator is updated with the learned similarity functions. The similarity functions can be used to evaluate the risk of changes by looking at the impact of similar past changes.

  • Patent number: 8145592
Abstract: An importance system calculates the importance of pages using a conditional Markov random walk model rather than a conventional Markov random walk model. The importance system calculates the importance of pages factoring in the importance of sites that contain those pages. The importance system may factor in the importance of sites based on the strength of the correlation of the importance of a page to the importance of a site. The strength of the correlation may be based upon the depth of the page within the site. The importance system may iteratively calculate the importance of the pages using “conditional” transition probabilities. During each iteration, the importance system may recalculate the conditional transition probabilities based on the importance of sites that are derived from the recalculated importance of pages during the iteration.
