  • Patent number: 8943023
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for receiving uploaded data from a sender at a receiver. A data deduplication technique is described that may reduce the bandwidth used in uploading data from the sender to the receiver. In the technique, the receiver, rather than the sender, maintains a fingerprint dictionary for previously uploaded data. When a sender has additional data to be uploaded, the sender extracts fingerprints for units of the data and sends the fingerprints to the receiver. The receiver checks its fingerprint dictionary to determine the data units to be uploaded and notifies the sender of the identified units, which then sends the identified units of data to the receiver. The technique may, for example, be applied in virtualized data store systems to reduce bandwidth usage in uploading data.

Abstract: Archiving may be integrated into an organization's existing data management systems instead of being configured as a separate system. This integration may occur by adding an archiving table to an existing database of the organization containing data that is to be archived. The archiving table may include multiple records, each record storing a binary large object representing a complete, self-contained archive of the organization's data at a preselected time. Incorporating archiving and archived data into the organization's existing data management systems in this manner may eliminate the need for a dedicated archiving system and may eliminate synchronization and interconnectivity issues with an independent archiving system.

  • Patent number: 8914330
Abstract: A mechanism is provided that aggregates data in a way that permits data to be deleted efficiently, while minimizing the overhead necessary to support bulk deletion of data. A request is received for automatic deletion of segments in a container and a waterline is determined for the container. A determination is made if at least one segment in the container falls below the waterline. Finally, in response to one segment falling below the waterline, the segment from the container is deleted. Each object has an associated creation time, initial retention value, and retention decay curve (also known as a retention curve). At any point, based on these values and the current time, the object's current retention value may be computed. The container system continually maintains a time-varying waterline: at any point, objects with a retention value below the waterline may be deleted.

Abstract: A computerized system and method are presented that provide access to three data collections that can form the foundations of a spiritual journey, namely a research archive for researching fundamental texts of a variety of spiritual and religious domains, a personal reflection data collection for reflecting upon a personal life journey, and a community conversation data collection that provides users with an opportunity to explore the research archive and their personal reflections in a social community setting. The research archive is oriented around ideas having snippets from the fundamental texts. The various elements in the data collections are associated with life issue tags and religious or spiritual domains. By analyzing a user's selected domain or the domain of displayed content, and by analyzing the life issue tag associated with displayed content, the system and method can suggest related content from elsewhere in the data collections.

Abstract: A computer-implemented system and method for providing recognized offline modification of a virtual asset are provided. A virtual asset that includes parameters that each have intrinsic significance within a virtual environment defined exclusively by a central server is identified. Qualitative rules including characteristics of the parameters are defined. The virtual asset is stored on storage media offline from the central server. Proposed changes to at least one of the parameters of the virtual asset applied by a client application are maintained and are stored on the storage media The virtual asset is authenticated on behalf of the central server through an asset authority. When authenticated, each proposed change is evaluated against the characteristics of the parameters as defined in the qualitative rules and only those proposed changes that are satisfactory are accepted.

Abstract: Some embodiments provide a scalable content streaming system that performs server-side archiving. The content streaming system includes a set of streaming server clusters, a remote storage server, and a set of distributed servers. Each streaming server cluster includes at least one streaming server and a local storage server. Each streaming server of a particular cluster distributes a content stream that is uploaded to the streaming server while also recording the content stream to the local storage server of that particular cluster. The remote storage server stores files from the local storage servers that are transferred when recording to those files is complete. The set of distributed servers distribute a live stream of content from a particular streaming server when the content is being uploaded to the particular streaming server and distribute a recorded stream of the content from the remote storage server when the upload is complete.

Abstract: A remote file server managing a remote storage device and a local file server managing a local storage device are coupled to a communication network (e.g. the Internet). The local file server (A) replicates a file in the local storage device to the remote file server and, (B) if a first condition is satisfied, manages the replicated file which is the file from which the data is replicated as a migration target file. The local file server, even if the (B) is completed, does not delete the migration target file from the local storage device and, if the second condition is satisfied, deletes the migration target file from the local storage device.

  • Patent number: 8818966
Abstract: When a file system manager responds to a request to write data to a specified number of blocks of a file, the file system manager determines that corresponding file system data block allocations exist and determines that the file is fragmented over the corresponding file system data block allocations. In response to determining that the file is fragmented over the corresponding file system data block allocations, the file system manager allocates and substitutes a single extent of contiguous file system data blocks for the corresponding file system data block allocations, and writes data to the newly allocated contiguous file system data blocks. For example, the file system manager compares a spread and a count of extent fragments of the file system data block allocations to appropriate thresholds to trigger the defragmentation upon file over-write.
