Abstract: Database management and security is implemented in a variety of embodiments. In one such embodiment, data sets containing sensitive data elements are analyzed using aliases representing sensitive data elements. In another embodiment, the sensitive data elements are stored in an encrypted form for use from a secure access, while the alias is available for standard access.

Abstract: A customized, specialty-oriented database and index, of a subject matter area and methods for constructing and using such a database are provided. Selection and indexing of articles is done by experts in the topic with which the database is concerned. As a result, articles are indexed in a manner that allows facile, rapid retrieval of highly relevant articles with few or no false positives with much reduced database maintenance cost through frugal limitation of number of documents in the database, number of terms in a Master Index, and number of codes assigned to each document. A thesaurus allows indexing and search in accordance with terminology familiar to different anticipated groups of users (e.g. doctors, patients, nurses, technicians, and the like). Key articles collections and rapid access to documents therein are also provided.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for implementing a standardized interpretive engine is provided. The method includes externalizing at least one of a business and a user requirement into a component class of a data control structure. The method also includes defining a solution to the business and user requirement and entering the solution into metadata within the component class. The method further includes pulling data from a data warehouse into the component class based upon the business and user requirement. The method also includes performing a calculation on the data in accordance with the business and a user requirement.

Abstract: Assuring recovery from failure of a storage server in a distributed column chunk data store of operably coupled storage servers, includes: partitioning a data table into chunks; implementing a distribution scheme with a specified level of redundancy for recovery of one or more failed servers among multiple storage servers; distributing the column chunks according to the distribution scheme; calculating column chunk parity; storing the calculated column chunk parity; managing metadata for the column chunk data store; and updating the metadata for distributing the column chunks among remaining storage servers upon receiving an indication to remove a storage serve.

Abstract: Described is a method for migrating versioned data from a source configuration management system to a target configuration management system. The method includes determining, for at least one historical period having versioned data items to be migrated from the source to target systems, an earliest versioned data item based on a start time for the historical period. At least one subsequent versioned data item is determined based on a sampling interval and an end time for the historical period. The earliest versioned data item and subsequent versioned data items for each historical period are migrated from the source configuration management system to the target configuration management system. Advantageously, migration is performed faster than if all existing versions are migrated and storage requirements are reduced. In addition, differencing tools in the target system can compare different versions of the migrated data items.

Abstract: An archival computer system for receiving digital documents from document source computers, archiving such digital documents, and providing the digital documents to client computer systems. The archival computer system is provided with a document database, a supplemental digital media database, a document input device, an archival computer, and a server. The document input device receives digital documents from the document source computers. The digital documents include non-pixalated, non-rastered digital documents, and supplemental media. The archival computer receives the digital documents, and archives data from the non-pixalated, non-rastered digital documents in the document database, and data from the supplemental media in the supplemental digital media database. The server, upon request, outputs a composite document including data stored in the document database and the supplemental digital media database.

Abstract: Saving database storage space includes receiving, using a processor, one or more properties associated with a newly released commodity input at a front-end server; determining whether the one or more properties of the newly released commodity match a standard property unit (SPU), wherein the SPU includes a plurality of properties common to at least two commodities of which data is stored at a back-end server; and in the event that the one or more properties of the newly released commodity match the SPU, storing data associated with binding the newly released commodity with the matching SPU at the back-end server.

The archive storage is a unified storage structure for storing items, such a directory having a plurality of subdirectories. The manifest is stored within the archive storage when the archive storage is loaded onto a storage device, and may comprise an index of items stored in the unified structure of the archive and/or an organizational structure that supports defined categories that characterize items stored in the unified structure and/or at least one backup queue that temporarily queues a list of items that satisfy predetermined backup criteria by have not been backed up. The archive service serves as an intermediate between users, e.g., operators, software modules, programs, services, etc., and the archive storage to control requests for access to items stored in the unified storage structure.

Abstract: A consistency enforcement system includes an XML object of an SOA-registry. The XML object includes a plurality of processing task XML elements that define a processing task to be performed the SOA. An updated XML object is received through an interface. The updated object includes at least one additional processing task XML element that defines at least one further processing task to be performed by the SOA. A validation unit is use to query the SOA-registry in order to obtain one or more predefined processing task identifiers. The validation unit matches a processing task identifier of the at least one additional processing task XML element of the updated XML object against the one or more predefined processing task identifiers obtained from the SOA-registry and approves or rejects the updated XML object (20?) depending on the result of the match.

Abstract: A system, method and computer program product include storing a representation of a mechanical system and an item type listing with parts and specifications for the parts. At least part of the representation comprising a group of parts to validate is displayed. A location of a part on the displayed representation is selected for analysis. An item type of the selected location is selected and linked to the selected location for determining analysis requirements. Analysis data from an alloy analyzer and specifications of the part is linked to the selected location of the displayed representation. On the displayed representation, a mismatch between analysis data and specifications is indicated, thereby transforming the representation to a representation comprising at least the analysis data and the specifications.

Abstract: Embodiments of archival storage system are disclosed. The archival storage system includes one or more removable disk drives that provide random access and are readily expandable. One or more application servers can store archival data to the one or more removable disk drives. Further, the archival storage system provides an audit trail that stores information about actions taken on the archival data. The audit trail data providing a list of the actions and information about the actions that can be used to determine changes to the archival data.

Abstract: An encrypted file storage solution consists of a cluster of processing nodes, external data storage, and a software agent (the “File System Watcher”), which is installed on the application servers. Cluster sizes of one node up to many hundreds of nodes are possible. There are also remote “Key Servers” which provide various services to one or more clusters. The preceding describes a preferred embodiment, though in some cases it may be desirable to “collapse” some of the functionality into a smaller number of hardware devices, typically trading off cost versus security and fault-tolerance.

Abstract: Software, firmware, and systems are described herein that permit an organization to dock previously-utilized, limited-feature data management modules with a full-featured data management system. By docking limited-feature data management modules to a full-featured data management system, metadata and data from the various limited-feature data management modules can be integrated and utilized more efficiently and effectively. Moreover, additional data management features can be provided to users after a more seamless transition.

Abstract: A knowledge management platform eliminates the trial and error process for analytical chemists in, for example, identifying appropriate methodologies for separating mixtures of chemical compounds. The platform allows the analytical chemists to perform a variety of searches on data existing from previous experiments, procedures, and/or processes. The platform may be employed to make faster decisions, and ultimately decreases the time taken in selecting an appropriate separation methodology.

Additionally, the method may include retaining the data items according to the retention schedule, wherein the retention schedule comprises a plurality of retention rules including a global retention rule defining a first duration for retaining the data items consistent with a set of predetermined requirements, and at least one exception rule for retaining at least one data item for a second duration.

Abstract: A system and method for managing data repositories may include providing techniques for end users to access and manipulate reports stored in the repositories. Text-based, image-based, or other types of reports may be stored in online and offline repositories, and in response to a search request, reports stored in the online and offline repositories may be retrieved. End users may export report data from text-based and image-based formats by converting the data into a spreadsheet format using various customization techniques. Thus, end users may edit, modify, analyze, or otherwise manipulate information in online and offline reports, while maintaining integrity of the information in the repositories.

The file storage system that performs file duplication for error recovery includes a client for requesting generation of a duplicate file of a new file being stored, a metadata server for storing information associated with prestored duplicate files and determining whether a file that is identical to the new file is present among the prestored duplicate files, to limit a number of identical duplicate files to a preset number, and a data server comprising a file duplication unit and a storage unit for respectively performing file duplication and file storage under the control of the metadata server. Accordingly, file recovery can be performed while duplicate files in the system are minimized.

Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for improved Portable Document Format (“PDF”) document archiving. The method includes scanning a source PDF document for a shared resource. The source PDF document includes a plurality of records. The shared resource includes a common resource referenced by way of a resource pointer associated with a record of the source PDF document. The method includes copying the shared resource to a resource group associated with the source PDF document. The method also includes short-circuiting a link between content for the shared resource and the resource pointer in each record that points to the shared resource. The method includes extracting a record from the source PDF document. The extracted record is void of content for the shared resource in response to the short-circuited link. Thus, records may be stored in a standalone format without excessive storage space requirements.

Abstract: Methods and systems provided herein provide an enterprise with the ability to conduct quickly and consistently respond to social media work items and other work items. In particular, a collaboration tool is provided to agents which allows the agents to view historical responses of other agents that have been determined, by an automated agent, to be relevant to a newly received work item. The relevant historical responses can be used to service newly received work items as either a suggestion for responding or as a response template. Responses to work items are then archived with data which describes the nature of the response and the work item for which it was created.

Abstract: An improved system and method for removing a storage server in a distributed column chunk data store is provided. A distributed column chunk data store may be provided by multiple storage servers operably coupled to a network. A storage server provided may include a database engine for partitioning a data table into the column chunks for distributing across multiple storage servers, a storage shared memory for storing the column chunks during processing of semantic operations performed on the column chunks, and a storage services manager for striping column chunks of a partitioned data table across multiple storage servers. Any data table may be flexibly partitioned into column chunks using one or more columns with various partitioning methods. Storage servers may then be removed and column chunks may be redistributed among the remaining storage servers in the column chunk data store.

Abstract: A computer-readable, non-transitory medium stores a program that manages compressed file groups on a plurality of slave servers. The file groups include compressed files that are to be searched and have character strings. Each of the compressed file groups is expanded, using a Huffman tree that was used for compressing the compressed file group. A common compression parameter is generated based on appearance frequency, by summing, for each character, the appearance frequency in each of the compressed file groups. The expanded files are recompressed using the common Huffman tree such that sums of the access frequencies of the compressed files that are origins of the recompressed files are substantially equivalent among various slave servers. New archives including the re-compressed files are transmitted to the respective slave servers.

Abstract: A two copy versioning scheme is proposed. The scheme provides efficient implementation for a high read load database and eliminates read dependencies. The versioning scheme provides efficient implementation for transactions executing under ANSI READ COMMITTED isolation, and is extensible to serializable isolation. The two-copy versioning scheme is garbage free meaning that all versions of data records are used during execution and is adapted to index scanning operations. A “deferred delete” scheme allows read transactions to complete data deallocation operations. Statements that require “snapshots” are efficiently supported.

Abstract: A system and method for optimizing a storage system to support short data object lifetimes and highly utilized storage space are provided. With the system and method, data objects are clustered based on when they are anticipated to be deleted. When an application stores data, the application provides an indicator of the expected lifetime of the data, which may be a retention value, a relative priority of the data object, or the like. Data objects having similar expected lifetimes are clustered together in common data structures so that clusters of objects may be deleted efficiently in a single operation. Expected lifetimes may be changed by applications automatically. The system automatically determines how to handle these changes in expected lifetime using one or more of copying the data object, reclassifying the container in which the data object is held, and ignoring the change in expected lifetime for a time to investigate further changes in expected lifetime of other data objects.

Abstract: The embodiments of the invention provide methods, computer program products, etc. for autonomic retention classes when retaining data within storage devices. More specifically, a method of determining whether to retain data within at least one storage device begins by storing data items in at least one storage device. Furthermore, the method maintains access statistics for each of the data items, an age of each of the data items, and an administrator-defined importance value of each of the data items. Following this, a retention value is calculated for each of the data items based on the access statistics for each of the data items, the age of each of the data items, and the administrator-defined importance value of each of the data items.

Abstract: The invention includes, in various embodiments, a method for archiving an electronic message which includes the steps of scanning the electronic message to determine whether at least a portion of the message is encumbered, disencumbering the encumbered portion of the message if it is encumbered, storing a copy of the disencumbered electronic message, and transmitting the electronic message to a recipient. Once stored, the disencumbered message can be accessed and reviewed by a supervisor, for example, without having to request a password from the sender or recipient. Encumbered messages include messages, or portions of messages, which are password protected, encrypted, and/or otherwise structured to prohibit unauthorized access thereto.

Abstract: System and method for removing threads from discussion groups based on ratings of the individual posts within the thread. If a user takes the time to rate a post positively, then the post (and the thread) is considered to be useful to the entire community and should not be deleted. To rate the post, a window is displayed to the user whenever the post is open and queries the user whether the post is useful. A positive rating resets a delete date associated with the post. If there is not positive rating of a post, the thread may be considered useful if the originator of a post marks the post as being answered, in which case delete clock is reset. If however, none of the posts within the thread are rated positively, then the thread is considered not be useful and deleted.
