  • Patent number: 8856112
Abstract: User accounts in a social networking application are divided into highly-connected accounts and regular accounts. A mapping of the highly-connected accounts to their friends, and a mapping of accounts to documents endorsed by the users associated with the accounts are stored on index servers of a search engine. When a query is received by a front-end server of the search engine, the front-end server determines if an account associated with the query is a highly-connected account. If it is, only an identifier of the account is sent to the index servers with the query. If it is not, however, then identifiers of all of the accounts that are friends with the account are sent with the query. The index servers then determine the documents that are endorsed by the friends of the account, and consider the determined documents when selecting documents that are responsive to the query.

Abstract: To suggest new connections to a user of a social networking system, the system generates a set of candidate users to whom the user has not already formed a connection. The system determines the likelihood that the user will connect to each candidate user if suggested to do so, and it also computes the value to the social networking system if the user does connect to the candidate user. Then, the system computes an expected value score for each candidate user based on the corresponding likelihood and the value. The candidate users are ranked and the suggestions are provided to the user based on the candidate users' expected value scores. The social networking system can suggest other actions to a user in addition to forming a new connection with other users.

An annotated set of labeled training data that is annotated with salience annotation values of items for respective web pages that include the items is obtained. The salience annotation values are determined based on a soft function, by determining a first count of a total number of user queries associated with corresponding visits to the respective web pages, and determining a ratio of a second count to the first count, the second count determined as a cardinality of a subset of the corresponding visits that are associated with user queries that include the item, the subset included in the corresponding visits. Models are trained using the annotated set.

Abstract: Systems and processes are described for generating a generic relationship dataset that can be adapted for use by multiple domain-specific applications. Such applications can include recommendation applications, search applications, optimization applications, and/or other applications. These systems and processes can analyze some or all actions of users with respect to a network application, such as a web application. Data representing user actions occurring in a time window can be paired together in the relationship dataset, together with one or more metrics related to the user actions. These metrics can represent general measurements that in certain embodiments are not customized for an individual application. As a result, separate domain-specific applications can independently analyze the relationship data according to different criteria without maintaining separate sets of the relationship data.

  • Patent number: 8825641
Abstract: Measuring duplication in search results is described. In one example, duplication between a pair of results provided by an information retrieval system in response to a query is measured. History data for the information retrieval system is accessed and query data retrieved, which describes the number of times that users have previously selected either or both of the pair of results, and a relative presentation sequence of the pair of results when displayed at each selection. From the query data, a fraction of user selections is determined in which a predefined combination of one or both of the pair of results were selected for a predefined presentation sequence. From the fraction, a measure of duplication between the pair of results is found. In further examples, the information retrieval system uses the measure of duplication to determine an overall redundancy value for a result set, and controls the result display accordingly.

Selection of the one or more parts may be made and results in the generation of a display of a further one or more parts for selection. The further one or more parts may be selected in order to add to the selected one or more parts to build a larger part or whole of an item identifier. Selection from a large list of item identifiers may be carried out in a relatively short time period.

Abstract: A method, system, and apparatus for improving performance when retrieving data from one or more storage media. Files to be stored on the one or more storage media are classified into a ranking of different sets. Differences in retrieval value of different regions of the one or more storage media are exploited by selecting which files to store in which regions. For example, files that have a higher classification are stored in regions with faster retrieval values. The files can be classified based on frequency of access. Thus, files that are more frequently accessed are stored in regions that have a faster retrieval value. The files can be classified by another measure such as priority. For example, the classification for some or all of the files can be based on user-assigned priority. The classification may be based on events or data grouping.

Abstract: A device receives, from a user device, a search query for video content listings in a video catalog. The device identifies, based on the search query, a set of relevant video assets from an index of the catalog content and determines dimensional values of the search query. The device determines a subset of the relevant video assets based on filtering usage metrics, for the set of relevant video assets, against the dimensional values. The device calculates a popularity value for each video asset in the subset of the relevant video assets and ranks each video asset in the subset of the relevant video assets to form a ranked list. The device sends, to the user device, a response to the search query that includes the ranked list.

Abstract: Method optimally links humans and information using correlations that detect shared interests. It then uses the probabilistic pathways established by iterating over these links to optimally connect individuals to the information they are most interested in. In so doing, this invention leverages the collective assessments of individuals whose perspectives most closely match the observer's perspectives to dramatically improve the personalized prioritization of information flows, information discovery, navigation and the efficient dissemination of information. This invention is particularly useful in providing an objective method to organize and assess information based on human subjectivity. Since human subjectivity plays an important factor in accessing the importance of nearly all forms of information, it dramatically improves the efficiency of connecting humans to the information they personally find the most valuable.
