  • Patent number: 8725737
Abstract: Systems and methods for managing electronic data are disclosed. Various data management operations can be performed based on a metabase formed from metadata. Such metadata can be identified from an index of data interactions generated by a journaling module, and obtained from their associated data objects stored in one or more storage devices. In various embodiments, such processing of the index and storing of the metadata can facilitate, for example, enhanced data management operations, enhanced data identification operations, enhanced storage operations, data classification for organizing and storing the metadata, cataloging of metadata for the stored metadata, and/or user interfaces for managing data. In various embodiments, the metabase can be configured in different ways. For example, the metabase can be stored separately from the data objects so as to allow obtaining of information about the data objects without accessing the data objects or a data structure used by a file system.

Abstract: The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for executing scripts (a sequence of declarative operations) on large data sets. Some implementations store descriptions of previously-executed operations and associated input and output data sets. When executing similar operations on the same, a subset of, a superset of, or any fragment of data subsequently, some implementations detect duplication of operations and access previously-stored output data sets in order to re-use data and reduce the amount of execution, thus avoiding time-consuming duplicative computations.

  • Patent number: 8719286
Abstract: Techniques for virtual machine backup are described herein. According to one embodiment, a source virtual machine (VM) disk file associated with a VM is parsed to generate metadata representing files stored in a virtual storage device of the VM, where the VM is one of one or more VMs hosted by a VM monitor (VMM). In response to a request to back up a subdirectory of one or more files stored in the source VM disk file, file records of the one or more files of the requested subdirectory are identified based on the metadata. The identified file records associated with the subdirectory are backed up from the source VM disk file to a target VM disk file, without having to back up remaining files in the source VM disk file.

Abstract: Example systems and methods concern a sub-block parser that is configured with a variable sized window whose size varies as a function of the actual or expected entropy of data to be parsed by the sub-block parser. Example systems and methods also concern a sub-block parser configured to compress a data sequence to be parsed before parsing the data sequence. One example method facilitates either actually changing the window size or effectively changing the window size by manipulating the data before it is parsed. The example method includes selectively reconfiguring a data set to be parsed by a data-dependent parser based, at least in part, on the entropy level of the data set, selectively reconfiguring the data-dependent parser, based, at least in part, on the entropy level of the data set, and parsing the data set.

  • Patent number: 8713073
Abstract: Computer programs embodied in computer-readable media that can use canonical schemas to persist data from non-temporal tables, effective-time tables, assertion-time tables, and bitemporal tables, and that can enforce temporal integrity constraints on those tables, are provided. In one embodiment, the canonical schemas are used by database tables. In another embodiment, they are used by the physical files which persist data from those tables. Temporal metadata is used to express temporal requirements. Thus, uni-temporal, bitemporal, and temporally-enabled non-temporal tables can be generated without altering existing data models or designing temporal features into new data models. Support is also provided for managing temporal data that exists in future assertion time, and for using episodes to enforce temporal referential integrity.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are presented for aggregating data from disparate sources into an efficiently accessible format. For example, an aggregation tool may receive attribute-based data from one source and metrics-based data from another source. Given this data, the aggregation tool may store attribute data from the attribute-based data into a data object, where the data object includes multiple time slots corresponding to defined time ranges. The aggregation tool may then determine from the metrics-based data, respective metrics data for each of the multiple time slots of the data object, where each time slot is associated with the attribute data. The aggregation tool may store the respective metrics data into each of the multiple time slots of the data object. In this way, the data object may serve to efficiently provide an answer to a query requiring data from multiple data sources.
