  • Patent number: 8103635
Abstract: Techniques used in an automatic failover configuration having a primary database system, a standby database system, and an observer. In the automatic failover configuration, the primary database system remains available even in the absence of both the standby and the observer as long as the standby and the observer become absent sequentially. The failover configuration may use asynchronous transfer modes to transfer redo to the standby and permits automatic failover only when the observer is present and the failover will not result in data loss due to the asynchronous transfer mode beyond a specified maximum. The database systems and the observer have copies of failover configuration state and the techniques include techniques for propagating the most recent version of the state among the databases and the observer and techniques for using carefully-ordered writes to ensure that state changes are propagated in a fashion which prevents divergence.

  • Patent number: 7991733
Abstract: Data structures, systems, methods and computer program products that enable precise information retrieval and extraction, and thus facilitate relational and associative discovery are disclosed. The present invention utilizes a novel data structure termed a “Knowlet” which combines multiple attributes and values for relationships between concepts. While texts contain many re-iterations of factual statements, Knowlets record relationships between two concepts only once and the attributes and values of the relationships change based on multiple instances of factual statements, increasing co-occurrence or associations. The present invention's approach results in a minimal growth of the Knowlet space as compared to the text space and it thus useful where there is a vast data store, a relevant ontology/thesaurus, and a need for knowledge navigation and (relational, associative, and/or other) knowledge discovery.

  • Patent number: 7991793
Abstract: A system and associated method for utilizing file names for diagnostic data files generated by a runtime environment. The method employs a file counter base that defines a predefined maximum number of files permitted in a file system, a generation number that indicates an instance of the runtime environment, and a file counter that comprises a file name. The file counter circulates by a cycle equal to the file counter base such that the file system uses only a limited disk space. The method determines the generation number per instance of the runtime environment by examining file counters of existing files in the file system. The generation number initializes the file counter for creating file names in the instance of the runtime environment. The method guarantees a longest life span of a diagnostic data file in a file system that has a limited number of files.

  • Publication number: 20110179084
Abstract: A content device may select associated content, such as adverts, for a user selected content item based on textual characterizing data for the associated content and the user selected content item. A term set characterizing the user selected content item is expanded using semantic graphs and similarity values between the expanded term set and term sets describing associated content is calculated. A specific associated content item is then selected based on the similarity values. The semantic graph based term set expansion may allow improved accuracy in selecting appropriate associated content while providing a process that is suitable for resource constrained scenarios. In particular, communication resource, memory resource, and computational resource usage may be kept low.

  • Publication number: 20110161285
Abstract: An approach is provided for automatic controlled value expansion of information. A value expansion controller detects a request at a device to perform an information operation on a set of data elements of an information space, wherein the request identifies the set by a name and the information operation applies to each data element within the set. The value expansion controller intercepts the request based on the detection and determines the location of the data elements within a communication network based on the name. The value expansion controller retrieves the data elements from the location and populates an expansion table with the retrieved data elements, wherein the expansion table is correlated to the set. The value expansion controller performs the information operation on each data element in the expansion table and causes transmission of one or more results of the information operation to the device.

Abstract: The invention relates to topic classification systems in which text intervals are represented as proposition trees. Free-text queries and candidate responses are transformed into proposition trees, and a particular candidate response can be matched to a free-text query by transforming the proposition trees of the free-text query into the proposition trees of the candidate responses. Because proposition trees are able to capture semantic information of text intervals, the topic classification system accounts for the relative importance of topic words, for paraphrases and re-wordings, and for omissions and additions. Redundancy of two text intervals can also be identified.

Abstract: Video on demand services rely on frequent viewing and downloading of content to enhance the return on investment on such services. Videos in general and movies in particular hosted by video portals need to have extensive annotations to help in greater monetization of content. Such deep annotations help in creating content packages based on bits and pieces extracted from specific videos suited to individuals' queries thereby providing multiple opportunities for piece-wise monetization. Considering the complexity involved in extracting deep semantics for deep annotation based on video and audio analyses, a system and method for deep annotation uses video/movie scripts associated with content for supporting video-audio analysis in deep annotation.

Abstract: A metadata management system and method enables complex query searches by users, e.g., different users having different query needs, using the same infrastructure. For querying metadata, the metadata management system provides functionality for aggregating all the concepts (metadata items) and relationships of the metadata across one or more users in a common format; extracting concepts and storing them in a metadata store (e.g., a relational database); extracting relationships and modeling them in a standard semantic representation. The system and method further records users' different needs on relationships into user-specific configuration files. The system is configured for retrieving, in response to a user query, relevant data items by using the meta-data selectively.

  • Patent number: 7849081
Abstract: A document analyzer receives a collection of text-based terms associated with a document. The document analyzer performs a statistical analysis on the text-based terms to identify a distribution of where the text-based terms appear in the document and relative frequency indicating how often the text-based terms appear in the document. The document analyzer utilizes the distribution and relative frequency information derived from the statistical analysis to rank multiple themes associated with the document. For example, a received listing of multiple themes may not be presented in any useful order, although it can be assumed that the themes in the listing are present in the document. Based on application of distribution and relative frequency information derived from the analysis, the document analyzer can identify which themes are most relevant to the document as a whole and/or which of themes correspond to different portions (e.g., pages or sections) of the document.

Abstract: A method, system, and computer usable program product for semantic data validation of disjoint data are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A mapping is performed for artifacts from a schema to artifacts in a selected ontology, creating a mapping graph having nodes. A first node in the nodes is analyzed using an inference algorithm. The analyzing determines a semantic error in a data corresponding to the schema artifact represented at a second node. A correction for the data is provided such that the correction eliminates the semantic error. Selecting the ontology includes receiving a set of ontologies from ontology sources. A subset of ontologies may be aggregated from the set of ontologies to form a super-ontology. A set of schema artifacts may be matched to a set of artifacts of the super-ontology. The super-ontology may be reduced to form a reduced ontology. The reduced ontology forms the ontology.
