  • Patent number: 4436546
Abstract: Apatite is conventionally made into a fertilizer material by treatment with a strong acid, requiring capital-intensive industry. Hydroxyapatite is treated above 1100.degree. C. with alkali but world reserves are problematic. The invention treats apatite at 900.degree. C. with sodium aluminosilicate/carbonate and siliceous material in quantities to keep the composition in terms of CaO, SiO.sub.2, Na.sub.2 O and P.sub.2 O.sub.5 in or near the ternary system Ca.sub.2 SiO.sub.4 --Ca.sub.3 (PO.sub.4).sub.2 --CaNaPO.sub.4.

  • Patent number: 4334908
Abstract: A composition of matter for use as a vitreous fertilizer comprising a soluble vitreous constituent comprising the following ingredients: 35 to 55 moles %, P.sub.2 O.sub.5 ; less than 10 moles %, K.sub.2 O; and the balance to 100 moles %, CaO and/or MgO. The balance of the composition, if any, is constituted by optional additions of nutrient proportions of one or more micro-nutrients in plant assimilable form, and/or optional additions of one or more plant-inert filler materials. Such compositions have favorable nutrient release rates. The invention also encompasses compositions of matter adapted for use as a plant fertilizer which comprises soluble vitreous plant nutrient release material in expanded or cellular form, and to methods of plant cultivation using such compositions.

  • Patent number: 4167406
Abstract: An alkaline high temperature process for the production of alkali containing highly citrate soluble calcined phosphate fertilizer is disclosed. The process comprises calcining a preheated mixture comprising a crude phosphate, an alkaline decomposing agent, silicic acid and phosphoric acid in a rotary kiln at a temperature of between about 900.degree. and 1300.degree. C. The preheated mixture is prepared by introducing phosphoric acid directly into the kiln and therein contacting it with the hot precursory mixture of the remaining starting material having a temperature of between about 150.degree. to 900.degree. C. The amounts of starting materials are preferably chosen such that in the mixture 1 mole of P.sub.2 O.sub.5 is present per about 1.1 to 1.8 moles of alkali oxide, and about 0.5 moles of SiO.sub.2 are present per mole of CaO which is in excess of the amount of CaO which can be bound in the form of calcium alkali phosphate.

  • Patent number: 3985537
Abstract: Calcined alkali phosphates of high citrate solubility are made by subjecting natural calcium phosphates including tricalcium phosphate to a thermal decomposition with an aqueous alkali hydroxide solution in a revolving furnace at 900.degree. to 1300.degree.C in the presence of silicic acid. The amounts in the starting mixture are selected to provide for one mol of P.sub.2 O.sub.5 per 1.1 to 1.5 mol of Me.sub. 2 O (Me being an alkali metal) and an amount of silicic acid sufficient to form calcium orthosilicate by combining with 1 mol of CaO derived from the initial tricalcium phosphate and with the lime which is not part of a phosphoric acid compound. The alkali hydroxide solution is introduced at a 30 to 80% concentration directly into the revolving furnace so as to cause the solution to impinge upon the mass while the same is at a temperature of at least 400.degree.C.
