  • Patent number: 7393378
Abstract: A process for recovering sodium bicarbonate and ammonium sulfate from a sodium sulfate solution. The sodium sulfate solution can be pure or contain other compounds such as sodium sulfite, carbonate, chloride, fluoride, nitrate and nitrite as would be the case if the sodium sulfate solution were derived from a sodium bicarbonate flue gas purification process. Carbon dioxide and ammonia gases or solid ammonium bicarbonate are added to the sodium sulfate solution to precipitate sodium bicarbonate which is removed from solution. The remaining solution is treated in a unique series of precipitation steps in which reactants are first recycled back to the sodium bicarbonate crystallizer and then the amount of sodium in the solution is adjusted to an amount that allows high grade ammonium sulfate fertilizer product to be produced.

  • Patent number: 6858058
Abstract: In a dry or concentrated liquid fertilizer when local water is added to dilute to a working concentration, the hardness components (e.g., Ca/Mg) in the local water react with the fertilizer components and begin to form low-solubility salts. These low-solubility salts form sludges in the working mixture and begin to scale up in the feeding tubes through which the liquid fertilizer is pumped. Furthermore, the fertilizer is deprived of the nutrient values of these low-solubility salts and, as a result, the economic value of the fertilizer is reduced. By adding excess sequestering agent(s) (i.e. above the amounts needed to dissolve the nutrients in the original fertilizer formulation) precipitation of the hardening components of the local water in the mixing tank, in the feeding tubes, and in the growing media is avoided, and previous scaling can be remedied.

  • Patent number: 6749660
Abstract: This invention concerns the formulation and preparation of ammonium- and urea-free solid-chemical compositions for the anaerobic bioremediation of environmental contamination using the biological process of denitrification. The composition includes nitrate salts and may also include additional sources of nutrient phosphorus, potassium and trace elements. The use of complex phosphates (i.e., salts of phosphoric acid) is used as a combined binder-nutrient system. The use of complex phosphates in this manner enables the water-based agglomeration of the composition into granular forms in a manner which greatly improves upon the safety of the commonly known “Tennessee Valley Authority” type granulation processes by reducing or eliminating the use of the highly toxic and dangerous chemicals anhydrous ammonia, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid.

  • Patent number: 6669753
Abstract: A method for desensitizing explosives illicitly manufactured from commercial fertilizers, preferably ammonium nitrate. Ammonium nitrate prills are impregnated with microballoons which carry a desensitizing agent, preferably water. The microballoons are sufficiently small that they can be incorporated into the prills where they are not easily separated. Should the modified ammonium nitrate be used as a starting material for the manufacture of ANFO, the resulting ANFO exhibits a diminished explosive potential. The microballoons release their contents in response to a prompt shock wave which passes through the ANFO. The released water quenches the explosive reactions in AN/fuel compositions and curtails the explosive performance of the ANFO. Further, the microballoons are a benign additive having no adverse impact on the fertilizer itself, the plant material or the environment if it is instead used for its intended purpose as a fertilizer.

  • Patent number: 6299663
Abstract: Granulated particles by making use an initial feedstock having particle size of −150 mesh and 90% or greater particle size of 200 mesh. The feedstock may be contacted in a pan granulator which includes a minor amount of nucleating material of about −35 mesh. Binder is introduced into the pan granulator to progressively layer the feedstock material onto the nucleating to form a final granular fertilizer or other product in any desired size distribution. The method by which the granules are formed is interruptible and is particularly useful for forming granules having a plurality of layers of differing material. The granules, by formation with dust feedstock and in the absence of seed material, lack a core and therefore include the maximum amount of tightly packed feedstock. This results in substantial increases in the break strength of the granules with uniform homogeneous cross-sections.
