  • Patent number: 7664902
Abstract: An extended Secure-Digital (SD) card has a second interface that uses some of the SD-interface lines. A card-detection routine on a host can initially use the SD interface to detect extended capabilities and command the card to switch to using the second interface. The extended SD card can communicate with legacy SD hosts using just the SD interface, or extended SD cards using the second interface. Also an extended Universal-Serial Bus (EUSB) host enters a suspend mode rather than polling an EUSB device that is busy performing a memory or other operations. Power is saved since polling is avoided. The busy EUSB device sends a not-yet signal back to the EUSB host to instruct the host to enter the suspend mode. When the EUSB device is ready to continue transfer with the host, the EUSB device wakes up the host by sending a ready signal back to the host.

  • Patent number: 7660914
Abstract: Described is an architecture by which application programs can provide data to auxiliary display devices of essentially any type for display to a user. A defined application layer (e.g., accessed via interfaces) allows programs to provide data to a service that controls the output of data to an auxiliary display device, and returns navigational data to the application upon appropriate user interaction with the device via actuators. Enumeration allows applications to discover the capabilities of a device, while arbitration determines which application has input-output rights to the device. The architecture further provides a protocol layer including pluggable protocol proxies that allow various types of displays to serve as an auxiliary display. This platform-like model allows program developers the ability provide programs that leverage auxiliary displays when available, and provides display manufacturers the ability to provide displays with extensible capabilities.

  • Patent number: 7660929
Abstract: A connector interface system for a communication device is disclosed. The interface includes a docking connector. The docking connector includes first make/last break contacts that minimize internal damage to the internal electronics. The docking connector also includes specific keying arrangement to prevent noncompliant connectors from being plugged in, and thereby minimizes potential damage to the multi-communication device. The connector interface system also includes a remote connector which provides for the ability to output audio, input audio, provides I/O serial protocol, and to provide an output video. Embodiments of the present invention allow for a standard headphone cable to be plugged in but also for special remote control cables, microphone cables, video cables could be utilized in such a system. The connector interface system also includes a serial protocol to control device features. These controls help a user sort and search for data more efficiently within the device.

Abstract: Because cable length affects signal quality, amplifying signals differently to account for cable length (“tuning”) becomes especially important when high speed signals are used. Cable length information may be stored in a non-volatile memory which may be integrated into a cable assembly or may be a discrete component between the cable and an interface. Rather than using a dedicated data line to the memory component a ground line may be connected to the memory component and multiplexed. During normal operation the selected line is grounded through a switching device. When a cable is detected, a management controller changes the state of the switching device to decouple the selected line from ground to allow the management controller access to the data stored in the memory component, including cable length information. The selected line is then re-coupled to ground and interface circuits may be tuned for the cable length.

Abstract: The present invention proposes a method for protecting and monitoring removable entities in an embedded system. In accordance with the present invention, prior to insertion of a removable entity in the embedded system, a user registers details of the removable entity in the device host. The details may be entered after entering a password or a PIN. A registration identification is calculated based on an algorithm in the device host and is then stored in the host. After the removable entity is inserted, it is registered in an unalterable area (e.g. flash memory) of the device host. Information such as the category of the removable entity, a device number, etc. may be exchanged between the device host and the removable entity. The device host then computes a registration identification based on a Removable Entity Registration Algorithm. The identifications are then compared, and the device host displays the details of the removable entity to the user.

Abstract: Improved techniques for rendering a peripheral device removable (e.g., unpluggable) are disclosed. According to one aspect of the invention, the peripheral device is rendered removable from a host computer without preparatory user actions. In effect, the peripheral device can be automatically prepared for removal in the event that its user removes (unplugs) it from its host computer. According to another aspect of the invention, the peripheral device includes a data storage device that is mounted to a file system of the other computer when the other computer desires access to the data storage device. Otherwise, the data storage device is normally unmounted so that if the peripheral device were to be removed (e.g., unplugged) no harm or damage to data stored therein would occur. These aspects of the invention can be utilized alone or in combination with one another.
