Abstract: A multiplexing pin control circuit for a computer system with multiple chips is provided, and includes a Southbridge chip having at least one multiplexing pin; at least one control module including a first connecting terminal electrically connected to the multiplexing pin, a second connecting terminal, and a control end receiving an enable signal; and a peripheral apparatus having an input/output (I/O) interface electrically connected to the second connecting terminal. When the enable signal is at a first level or a second level, the peripheral apparatus is electrically isolated from or connected to the second connecting terminal correspondingly. The control module switches on or switches off an electrical connection of the multiplexing pin with an external circuit, thereby avoiding an interference with a level voltage of the multiplexing pin during an initialization and reset period and further ensuring the multiplexing function of the pin during a normal operation period.

Abstract: In one general aspect, methods and devices for use with multiple communications protocols automatically determine which communications protocol to use when connected to a system bus. Signals transmitted on the system bus are monitored to determine what communications protocol the system bus is using. After determining which communications protocol the system is using, a compatible communications protocol is selected from one of several communications protocols stored in a device's memory. As a result, a user may connect a device to the system bus without having to determine which communications protocol is used by the system bus. Furthermore, suppliers may stock a single type of device that is compatible with multiple communications protocols reducing overhead associated with stocking devices. In addition, a device may be switched between systems without regard to the communications protocol of the device or system.

Abstract: Architecture that provides programmatic association of a device (e.g., removable) to a currently logged-in user, and restricts access to the drive only to that particular logged-in user. When active, the architecture detects when devices are added to the system, determines which logged-in user a given device (or devices) should be assigned, modifies the security settings for the device(s), and makes a per-user drive letter mapping to that device such that only the logged-in user can see the mapped device. In the context of serially attachable peripheral devices such as USB (universal serial bus) devices (and IEEE 1394 devices), for example, access can be restricted to a user based on the USB hub into which the device is connected.
