  • Patent number: 9229516
Abstract: Network presence of a computing device in a cloud computing network is maintained while power consumption of the computing device is reduced. When the computing device is determined to enter an idle state, at least some of the operations of the computing device running in a virtual machine environment are migrated to a server within the cloud computing network while maintaining connectivity of the computing device to the cloud computing network. When the computing device is determined to be in the idle state, the computing device is put into a sleep mode to reduce power consumption of the computing device. When the computing device is determined to be in an active state, the computing device is woken, and the migrated operations are returned from the server to the computing device. This reduces power consumption of the computing device while maintaining the network presence of the computing device in the cloud computing network.

  • Patent number: 9026812
Abstract: An example method is provided and includes communicating a first packet to a network element in order to indicate whether an endpoint can have its power managed by network communications. The first packet includes an Internet protocol (IP) address associated with the endpoint. The method also includes receiving a second packet from the network element to identify whether the endpoint can have its power managed. The endpoint is configured to have its power managed via a port associated with the endpoint. In more specific embodiments, a state associated with the endpoint is used to determine whether to power on, or to power off the endpoint. In other implementations, the endpoint is powered on, or powered off at a specific time based on a policy associated with the endpoint.

  • Patent number: 9026814
Abstract: A power context system is described herein that makes decisions related to device power usage based on factors such as location, load, available alternatives, cost of power, and cost of bandwidth. The system incorporates contextual knowledge about the situation in which a device is being used. Using the context of location, devices can make smarter decisions about deciding which processes to migrate to the cloud, load balancing between applications, and switching to power saving modes depending on how far the user is from a power source. As the cloud becomes more frequently used, load balancing by utilizing distributed data warehouses to move processes to different locations in the world depending on factors such as accessibility, locales, and cost of electricity are considerations for power management. Power management of mobile devices is becoming important as integration with the cloud yields expectations of devices being able to reliably access and persist data.

  • Patent number: 9026778
Abstract: According to one embodiment, an information processing apparatus includes a storage device, a setup module, an operation control module, and a setup value control module. The storage device stores power-saving setup information including at least one setup item relating to an operation of the apparatus. The setup module sets up a value of the at least one setup item in accordance with a user operation. The setup value control module acquires first setup information including a first setup value corresponding to the at least one setup item, and applies a setup value with a higher power-saving effect, which is selected between the first setup value and a current setup value of the at least one setup item, to the at least one setup item.

  • Patent number: 9026826
Abstract: A system for reducing energy consumption of a device and a method therefor. An apparatus for providing power to a controlled device includes a memory, a power controller, and a processor. The processor receives switching data from the memory. The switching data may include at least one on time and at least one off time. The processor generates a connect command or a disconnect command from the switching data and issues the command to the power controller. The power controller connects a power source interface to a power output interface. A power source is also connected to the power source interface. The power output interface is connected to a power input of the controlled device. The power controller connects the power output interface to the power source interface in response to a connect command and disconnects the power output interface from the power source interface in response to the disconnect command.

Abstract: Associating service agents in communication over a network to one or more respective clients coupled to the network at respective ports of the network is described. At a first service agent, a first signal is received from a first client coupled to the network at a first port. The first signal propagates over a first signal propagation path between the first service agent and the first port. An association between the first service agent and the first client is established based at least in part on a difference between: the first signal propagation path between the first service agent and the first port, and a second signal propagation path between the first service agent and a second port or between a second service agent and the first port.

Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product are provided for remote management of a computer system using graceful power control commands. A management controller is able to receive commands from a remote management console to perform a graceful power control command (e.g., power-down, hibernate). The management controller stores the graceful power control command in a shared memory and notified (e.g., via interrupt) a management agent that the graceful power control command is present. The management agent retrieves the graceful power control command and invokes an appropriate operating system command. The management agent can also provide result information to the management controller.

  • Patent number: 9026816
Abstract: A method and system for determining an energy-efficient operating point of the platform or system. The platform has logic to dynamically manage setting(s) of the processing cores and/or platform components in the platform to achieve maximum system energy efficiency. By using the characteristics of the workload and/or platform to determine the optimum settings of the platform, the logic of the platform facilitates performance guarantees of the platform while minimizing the energy consumption of the processor core and/or platform. The logic of the platform identifies opportunities to run the processing cores at higher performance levels which decreases the execution time of the workload and transitions the platform to a low-power system idle state after the completion of the execution of the workload. Since the execution time of the workload is reduced, the platform spends more time in the low-power system idle state and therefore the overall system energy consumption is reduced.
