Abstract: A host apparatus capable of setting an N-up function and a control method thereof. The host apparatus provides a function of printing a plurality of pages on a single sheet of printing paper, and includes a Graphic User Interface (GUI) generating unit which generates a user interface to set a border attribute of the pages, a border generating unit which generates border data by incorporating the border attribute if the border attribute of the pages is set, and a driver control unit which converts the generated border data and print data corresponding to the plurality of pages into a printer language. Accordingly, a user is provided with customized N-up printing, which provides a printout of a plurality of pages on a single paper sheet with borders as desired by the user.

Abstract: Book definitions can be dynamically created based on content provided by a user. Such dynamic creation can include organization of user-supplied content into appropriate form, adjustment of book cover properties to match the user-supplied content, and verification that the user supplied content is appropriate for presentation in book form. Various interfaces can also be provided which allow users to generate a book definition based on a minimum of information.

Abstract: A system and method for determining data usage based on provenance information, in a stream-processing system, includes progressively setting usage information for output stream data objects (SDOs), determining input SDOs that an output SDO depends on, based on a provenance dependency function; recursively feeding back the usage information for a subset of SDOs that can be discarded; and discarding the subset of SDOs. A system and method for data retention based on usage information, in a stream-processing system, includes managing retention of SDOs by deleting SDOs that are determined to be of null usage; and enhancing retention characteristics of SDOs that are deemed to have usage.

Abstract: A remote browsing and searching process is directed to the generation and management of a remote browse session at a network computing provider. Responsive to a search request, the network computing provider provides search results corresponding to historical content representations associated with content previously requested by the client computing device, or search results corresponding to content representations associated with current content, or to both. The network computing and storage provider may determine the search results based on a navigation path associated with a previous request for content, based on navigation paths of other client computing devices, based on relationships or differences between various versions of content, or based on any number of other factors.

Abstract: The present method relates to the automated indexing of event images for distribution. The automated indexing can use automated facial recognition to determine which people are in each image. The images indexed in this fashion can be presented in a gallery, ordered by characteristics of the people in the images such as their name or room number, so as to facilitate the selection of the images by the people. The identification of the people in the images can be assisted by security or other information regarding the people that may be available to the event manager. Furthermore, the closeness of the relationships of two people can be inferred from the degree to which the people are in the same images, allowing the people in the images to be placed into groups, which can be hierarchical and/or overlapping, and which can assist in the organization of images being presented to the people, either in a gallery or electronic display format.

Abstract: A receiving apparatus and method for display of final superimposed scenes from a receiver adapted to receive shared object control information used for forming final superimposed scenes and display final superimposed scenes. The final superimposed scenes are formed by superimposing two or more shared scenes each comprising one or more shared objects. The shared object comprises user-selectable command objects that are separately controllable independent of the shared scenes.

Abstract: Systems and methods are described for passing a data item to and obtaining the data item from a scripting environment hosted by a host environment, wherein each environment uses a different representation of the data item. The host environment passes the data item to the scripting environment by passing a host environment representation of the data item that is hidden from developers of scripts to be executed by the scripting environment. This enables the original host environment representation of the data item to be preserved even after the data item has been passed to and from the scripting environment in the case where the scripting environment does not modify the data item, and also facilitates lazy conversion of the data item or avoidance of conversion entirely in the case where the scripting environment does not modify the data item.

Abstract: An interactive multimedia diary system is presented. The system can include one or more interfaces for media content devices (e.g., communications devices, still or video cameras, audio devices, or any other suitable media content storing or generating devices). An interactive multimedia diary can be composed by collecting and arranging a plurality of media types (e.g., images, video, audio, text, etc.). Alternatively, other suitable data collections such as a journal, a scrapbook, an album, a log, a notebook, or a memoir can be composed. The system can prompt a user for input based on input previously entered. The system can scan input text for keywords, such as verbs associated with common activities, previously used or new names, locations, or any other suitable concepts and prompt the user for more information.

Abstract: A web-based application constructor can be used to construct a web display. The web-based application constructor can obtain data from heterogeneous data sources having Web Services schemas to produce the web display. The web display can contain page components and can display the data from at least some heterogeneous data sources. A versioning system can keep track of changes to page components, page layout, searches, and text to allow users to make changes without administrative approval.

Abstract: A display device includes a display unit, a storing unit, a navigation string generating unit, and a display control unit. The display unit includes a first region and a second region. The display unit displays, in the first region, one of a plurality of screen images managed hierarchically. The plurality of screen images includes a first screen image and a second screen image. The storing unit stores a plurality of character strings corresponding to the plurality of screen images. The navigation string generating unit includes a specifying unit and a generating unit. The specifying unit specifies a setting value selected for at least the second screen image that was navigated through to arrive at the first screen image currently displayed in the first region. The generating unit generates a navigation string including at least one of the character strings corresponding to the second screen image and a setting data representing the setting value.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing rich media for enhancing user interaction with a messaging program. The rich media includes user perceptible content and content specific information. User perceptible content may include a small animated picture with an embedded sound file that messaging program users can send to each other during a messaging session. Content specific information may include a description of the perceptible content, context menu items including universal resource identifiers that link to information related to the content and information related to other messaging program content. In addition computer code is provided to allow communication between the rich media and the messaging program so that the messaging program and the rich media can interoperate.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method can include receiving, in a system that maintains web notebooks for a plurality of user accounts, a request for a web document from a client computing device; determining whether a portion of the requested web document is included in a web notebook associated with one of the plurality of user accounts; and when it is determined that the portion is included in a web notebook associated with one of the plurality of user accounts, providing for display by the client computing device a highlighted version of the web document having a visual indicator that highlights the portion. Determining whether a portion of the requested web document is included in a web notebook associated with one of the plurality of user accounts can include determining whether the portion is included in at least a threshold number of web notebooks associated with distinct user accounts.

Abstract: Information content is managed in a network-based communication system by providing a first web-based interface accessible to a first user, the first web-based interface being configured to permit the first user to designate at least one data source that is external to the first web-based interface, maintaining persistent information content on behalf of the first user including content obtained from the data source designated by the first user, and generating a second web-based interface different than the first web-based interface, wherein access to at least a portion of the persistent information content is provided to each of one or more additional users via the second web-based interface in a manner controlled by the first user via the first web-based interface to thereby facilitate interaction between the first and additional users. The first and second web-based interfaces may comprise respective content management and mobile web sites.

Abstract: Generation of a search query to be issued to a document search engine is supported by providing a GUI creation unit that generates a graphical user interface for supporting generation of a search query. The GUI creation unit generates a query-node creation window that is a GUI window for generating a new search word to be connected to a search query by a logical operator. The query-node creation window includes a sample-document preview area that displays a sample document, a facet list area that displays facets extracted from the sample document in list form, a query-node creation assist area to assist generation of the new search word, and a logical-operator selection icon to select a logical operator that connects the generated search word.

Abstract: Methods and systems are described for binding attributes between visual components. A first visual component, including a first presentation space for presenting first data by an operating first application, is detected. Binding information, for the first application, is identified that specifies a mapping between a first visual attribute of the first visual component and a second visual attribute of a second visual component including a second presentation space for presenting second data by a second application. A change to the first visual attribute is detected. In response to the detection of the change, change information is automatically sent to change the second visual attribute according to the mapping.

Abstract: A required number of images for creating an album are compensated using existing still images, and an album with a fine appearance is created by effectively using a small number of available still images (still images in stock). A value N, which is obtained by subtracting the total number of selected images from the total number of images that a template of a photo album requires (the total number of combination frames), is determined as the minimum number of shortfall images that are required for compensating the shortage of images. An image (original image for creation) appropriate for the original, from which images for compensating the shortage of images are created, is selected from among selected images. New images are created by applying a predetermined image processing to the selected original image for creation, until the minimum number N of shortfall images is satisfied.

Abstract: The invention allows an online print engine to enhance a printing quality and a user experience of an online printing system. The invention may be used for photo books, photo cards, photo calendars, and in other online print situations. One embodiment is a print engine residing on and executable from a digital medium, the print engine integrated with a graphical user interface (GUI) for creating and editing photo-based projects over a data network, the print engine including a communications link to a print server and a printer connected to the data network, a print queue for queuing printing tasks, and an effects filter size-reduction module. The print engine automatically senses via the effects filter size-reduction module if the area of a filter is greater than a pre-defined threshold, and if so produces a smaller filter embedded into a bitmap image, after which the bitmap image is scaled back up to the filters original size.

Abstract: An information processing apparatus that converts PDL data into PDL data having a hierarchical structure is provided. The information processing apparatus: acquires the number of records in PDL data and creates a template including nodes in a record layer, which correspond to records in a one-to-one relationship and are equal to the number of records, based on the number of records; inputs PDL data and acquires relational information indicating the relation between a page and a record both included in PDL data; adds nodes in a lower layer of the record layer, which are linked with the nodes in the record layer included in the created template, and sets attribute information about PDL data to each of the nodes in the lower layer of the record layer; and maps each page included in PDL data to each node in the lower layer of the record layer based on relational information.

Abstract: An aspect of the present invention relates to tracking a computer user's behavior and providing related visual media segments with a graphical user interface for presenting a survey. In embodiments, the survey is based on the tracked user behavior. In embodiments, the visual media segments are slide-in visual media segments and the user has preemptive control over certain aspects of the visual media segments.

Abstract: In setting, by using a format, a non-display region in image data obtained by an image reading unit, a format location information input unit writes in the image data, an image representing information on access to a format storage unit in an external apparatus where a format to be used has been stored. In displaying the image data, a format location information extraction unit extracts the format location information by extracting the image from the image data. A format obtaining unit obtains the format by accessing the format storage unit based on the information. An image modification unit uses the obtained format to modify the image data such that the designated region is displayed in an invisible manner.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for using layout objects or layers are described. In one embodiment, the method comprises accessing information in a JPM file having a plurality of layout objects and generating at least one image using the plurality of layout objects, wherein a first set of at least one of the layout objects of the plurality of layout objects in the image occludes a second set of one or more layout objects in the plurality of layout objects.

Abstract: A method and system for rendering electronic document objects is provided in which a style matrix holds potential attribute values, and attribute references are used to address values in the style matrix. A mix of attribute references and actual attribute values may be used so make some attributes theme- and application-specific, and others theme- and application-independent. Further, a method for rendering a gallery of potential styles is provided. Additionally, a method for associating a style matrix with an electronic document application is provided. Finally, a computer-readable medium for storing a computer-interpretable data structure that identifies a matrix of style attribute types and style attribute values is provided.

Abstract: Posts are ranked for display on a page in a social network environment based on interaction and user score signals associated with the post and a viewing user. The signals for each of the posts are scored, and a ranking score for each post is determined. The posts are ranked in an order for display based on the ranking score and displayed for the viewing user on the page. Posts submitted by other users who have established connections with the viewing user are also filtered for display in a social box on the page.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for automatically generating an inspiration board. The system and method involves inputting at least one term into a computer system. Based on the inputted term, at least one image is selected from a database of images stored in the computer system and at least one pattern from a database of patterns stored in the computer system. The inspiration board is assembled by the computer system using the image and the pattern.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to a system and methods of producing electronic, digital signage that is customizable by a user through a user interface which allows the user to create digital displays specific for the needs of the user's business. In particular, the digital signage system and methods employ a template, modules occupying space within the template, with each module possessing media content displayed in the module and a theme for the template providing a background and coloration for the template. Each module utilizes media content such as a single image or video file, or alternatively, can utilize category content that is comprised of one or more images or video files. To prepare a digital signage advertisement, one or more layouts are combined in sequence and arranged by the user with the schedule, frequency and duration determined automatically or by a user according to the particular needs of the user.

In an embodiment, content for display within a tiled interface and a screen size for display of the tiled interface are determined. Grid segments of the tiled interface are determined based on the content and the screen size. The grid segments are grouped into tiles of the tiled interface based on a relative importance of the articles. The content is displayed on the tiled interface within the tiles of the tiled interface.

Abstract: Managing diagram elements in a drawing becomes more challenging as the number of diagram elements increases. Placing a new diagram element in a drawing often requires manual movement of one or more other diagram elements within the drawing. Functionality can be implemented within a drawing application to automatically manage diagram elements in a drawing by applying layouts to sets of diagram elements. A drawing tool can associate a set of diagram elements and assigns them a exclusive area or region in the drawing space. Since a layout occupies an exclusive area, the drawing tool can manage the drawing space by automatically moving elements within a first layout when overlap with a second layout is detected. Managing drawing spaces with layouts reduces time spent adjusting diagram elements as a result of applying operations to other elements.

Abstract: A system for and method of enhancing web page delivery and visitor tracking. The invention provides the ability to control redirection of Web traffic of humans. It can identify visitors to a Web page, track their movements, log critical information, and analyze the Web traffic in order to judge the success in driving quality traffic to some known goal on a Web site, such as a sale. The system tracks visitors via use of redirection with an image tag. The invention can also use unique image marker references to prevent browsers from accessing cached images.

Abstract: A system and method for analyzing time for a slide presentation that permits a speaker to coordinate available time with the number of slides to be shown and a method of operating the same is described. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a time allocation tool enabling a user to establish a presentation time with respect to at least one slide in the slide presentation and allocate any remaining presentation time to each remaining slide on a pro-rata basis and (2) a monitoring module associated with the time allocation tool to monitor the progress of the slide presentation and display a time status for the slide presentation as well as a slide number and a time status for a currently displayed slide.

The plurality of links are determined by the search engine by: producing search results by rerunning a plurality of search queries that have been performed previously for the computer user; and evaluating the produced search results to select search results that meet predefined search result selection criteria. For each content item, the initial time value is modified to a different time value by applying the change amount value to the initial time value.

Abstract: A user interface tag for use in processing a document is provided. A printable surface is on one side of a document and an adhesive surface is on an other side of the document. The printable surface further includes a printed data field, including machine-readable marks of digital data encoding a service and a user identity; and a printed border surrounding the printed data field to define an iconic representation. A scanned representation of the machine-readable marks is decoded from the iconic representation to specify the user identity and the service.
